“Juvenile Justice” Surpasses “Squid Game” in Critical Reviews
The popularity of Korean dramas has been hitting a new high with the international successes of Crash Landing on You, Squid Game, and All of Us are Dead. Most recently, the Netflix’s Juvenile Justice premiered to much praise for its edge-of-seat storyline and stellar performance by its cast. In the legal series, many juvenile delinquency issues are highlighted.
The plot revolves around various cases involving homicide, domestic violence, sex trafficking, and bullying. Since the teenagers stand in court to be tried for their actions, the situations raise issues of parental negligence and institutional failures leading to these tragic outcomes. The series also question whether it is appropriate to measure the weight of guilt based on the offender’s age.
Writer Kim Min Seok spent four years researching the subject, including visiting juvenile institutions, speaking with personnel, and examining real-life cases.
Despite the gritty violence depicted in certain cases, Juvenile Justice quickly climbed the ratings charts in many international markets, including in Taiwan, Vietnam, and Thailand upon its release on February 25. The IMDB evaluation score for Juvenile Justice has surprisingly surpassed Squid Game and All of Us are Dead.
