Kate Tsui Hopes to Focus on Film Career
As the winner of the 2004 Miss Hong Kong pageant, 36-year-old Kate Tsui (徐子珊) has enjoyed a high-profile career in television, film, and music since her debut in the entertainment industry. After joining TVB, Kate was heavily promoted, winning Most Improved Actress in 2007 and also My Favorite Actress in 2012. For her performance in the film Eye in the Sky <跟蹤>, Kate won Best New Performer at the 27th Hong Kong Film Awards. In 2009, Kate also won Best Newcomer at various music award ceremonies.
Despite achieving awards recognition, Kate decided to leave TVB and take her career in a new direction. Saying goodbye to her colleagues of 11 years was especially hard. Kate said, “But we will still be in close contact to discuss future collaborations.”
Many management agencies are already hoping to sign with Kate, including Hong Kong and Mainland China establishments. Since Kate wants to focus on the film industry, Shaw Brothers and Eric Tsang‘s (曾志偉) company have also approached her. One agency even offered $30 million HKD. Kate laughed and said, “Besides money, the collaborative partnership entails many other factors also.”
Despite the numerous offers, Kate is not in a rush to make a decision and wants to complete her jewelry design class first. “I do homework every day and have been busy with thinking about designs. Since I’m graduating at the end of the month, I need to pass the test before I get a certification.” Formerly studying at the University of California, Davis, Kate further added, “I enjoy being a student, but I’m nervous about the exams. Right now, I’m thinking about designs even when I’m eating dinner. It’s very busy! So deciding on a new [career] direction will have to wait until after I finish my exams. It’s such an important decision that I have to approach it very seriously!”
