Kelly Fu On Her Improved Acting in “Forensic Heroes VI”
Showcasing marked improvement in her acting in the recent two years, actress Kelly Fu’s (傅嘉莉) transformation did not go unnoticed by viewers, who praised her emotionally layered shouting scenes in Forensic Heroes VI: Redemption <法證先鋒VI: 倖存者的救贖>. She shared in an interview about director Andrew Lau’s (劉偉強) strict chastising on the set of Infernal Affairs II <無間道II>, and attributed her improvement to experiencing life’s ups and downs over the years.
Picked by Media as “Next Generation Fadan” Back in 2013
Once given the unflattering label of being a “vase”, the actress has proven naysayers wrong with her solid onscreen performances as a dance hostess in Nigh Beauties <一舞傾城> and “Fo Gai Jie” in From Hong Kong to Beijing <香港人在北京>, entering the final five in “Most Improved Actress” and “Best Supporting Actress” category nominations. In the recently airing Forensic Heroes, her heart-wrenching breakdown scene after experiencing the demise of a loved one was widely praised by netizens.
Grateful for the reception, Kelly said, “I didn’t expect the good response, I’m very touched to receive everyone’s affirmation, my belief is that hard work will not go unnoticed,” She mentioned having “done sufficient homework” after receiving the script, and confided that she started taking acting classes since over ten years ago, was most recently focusing on studying her script and character with her teacher. However, she felt that taking lessons could not compare to getting the chance to hone her skills through actual acting opportunities, and is eternally grateful to producer Chung Shu-Kai (鍾澍佳), whom she sees as an important mentor, for the chances he gave and the trust he placed in her.
In 2003, Kelly had the chance to take part in Infernal Affairs II, but faced director Andrew Lau’s rage for underperforming on set. “He was really brutal and straightforward, he said, ‘She can’t act, why did we cast her, she can’t even scream’, The script was about me going for an abortion after finding out that I’m pregnant, but back then I was unable to digest the plot, and couldn’t deliver up to mark,” The unfortunate blight in her career eventually fired up Kelly’s resolve to improve herself. To this day, she still keeps in touch with director Lau, and thanks the latter for his chastising, which spurred her to do better. “Now, I can (scream),”
Affected By Dad’s Illness, She Lost Weight from Depression
Praised for her authentic delivery this time in Forensic Heroes VI, Kelly confided that she might have chaneled her own authentic experiences from her past, and shared how she had suffered a depressive episode many years back due to her father’s illness. “At that time I took care of all of dad’s treatment, I would hide the unhappiness in front of my family, but turns out that I had internalized quite a bit of negativity, my weight fell to 90 pounds; when I looked at myself, I saw all skin and bones. (You had depression?) Yea for about a year, I’d totally not go out to socialize, didn’t feel like selfies or dressing up at all, and would go straight home after work for about a year, my emotions levelled off only after my dad recovered,”
When the 39-year-old first pivoted from modelling to acting in 2013, Kelly was troubled by negative rumors, and thought about retreating behind the scenes. She recounted hearing “angel” and “devil” voices in her head, was on the verge of giving up acting, but decided against it as she felt that acting was still what gave her the most satisfaction,” She pointed out that life was inevitably full of highs and lows, and has now learnt to turn her challenges and experiences into fuel for her roles. Expressed her future goal for every role to be positively received by viewers, it turns out that Kelly also looks up to acclaimed Taiwanese actor Kang Ren Wu’s (吳慷仁) masterful ability to bring his characters to life. The actress is open to taking on roles with nudity, she says, depending on “the story arc, character, director, style, and it must be for art, not pornography”; she would likely say yes if it were director Ang Lee (李安)!
