Kenneth Ma and Linda Chung Favorites to Win Top TV Titles
Kenneth Ma (馬國明) and Linda Chung (鍾嘉欣) are leading online polls as this year’s top contenders for TV King and TV Queen.
Although viewers generally supported last year’s public voting system, some felt that it instead crushed the chances of less popular artists. Unable to strike a fair balance, TVB announced on October 9 that this year’s Best Actor and Best Actress awards will be decided by a panel of industry professionals. TVB executive Sandy Yue (余詠珊) explained, “Fans may only vote to support their idols instead of recognizing those with true talent… using a professional judging panel would increase the awards’ persuasiveness.”
With TVB calling the shots once again, many speculate that the company will hand out TV’s highest honors to its own contract artists. Although Wayne Lai (黎耀祥) and Moses Chan (陳豪) are often touted by the media due to their involvement in Anniversary series Will Power <法外風雲>, TVB’s managed artist Kenneth Ma seems to be netizens’ choice.
Having starred this year in Season of Love <戀愛季節>, Triumph in the Skies 2 <衝上雲霄II>, and the upcoming anniversary series The Hippocratic Crush 2 <On Call 36小時 II>, Kenneth is surely being groomed to take the TV King title. A dark horse favorite last year, Kenneth has already won over the public. His Best Actor win at the Astro on Demand Awards also demonstrated his popularity.
Other notable TVB-managed artists such as Michael Tse (謝天華) and Raymond Lam (林峯) have either left the company or off to pursue other ventures. Wayne and Moses aside, the media believes Kenneth’s strongest competitor is likely the heavily-promoted Ruco Chan (陳展鵬). Discussing his chances, Kenneth said, “The Hippocratic Crush 2 is a sequel after all… there aren’t any drastic differences, so I don’t think my chances are very high.”
As for TV Queen, Linda Chung is currently an online favorite while Kate Tsui (徐子珊) and Tavia Yeung (楊怡) are also predicted to be strong contenders. Although some feel that Linda’s performance in Brother’s Keeper <巨輪> is average at best, her stint during this summer’s Office of Practical Jokes <玩嘢王> has highlighted her potential. A popular actress with a guaranteed audience, Linda has also been cast in the highly anticipated Tiger Cubs 2 <飛虎II> and is a singer under TVB’s new record label. It would no surprise if TVB decides to further sweeten the deal with the TV Queen award in order to retain one of their most valued actresses.

KRISTAL TIN AS BEST ACTRESS! I wouldn’t say her role as Ah Ying in BK is outstanding, but it definitely stands out more than Linda’s role as Rachel.
I also agree with what you said about Linda in The Gem of Life. She was awesome in it. Very in character.
No opinion on Tavia as On Call 2 isn’t even out yet, but honestly, I doubt she would make much of an impression. Her role didn’t stand out in the first On Call and I doubt it will in the second. If anything, it was her chemistry with Kenneth Ma that drew the fans.
Kate is a very “safe” actress. Her acting is neither bad nor impressive.
Oh, yes, also Joey Meng! She did very well this year.
I don’t think TVB will give the award to Joey Meng or Krystal Tin as both actresses are not pretty young thing like Linda or Kate. No wonder there are so many disgruntled ex TVB actors and actresses.

You might be right, however in the lack of a strong younger actress contender, they might think about giving it to Joey or Kristal. To push them to higher popularity. E.g. Wayne and Ben Wong gained notably popularity and made them into leading men. I know Wayne was very popular due to RB, but the award sustained his leading position long-term.
agreed all above. Linda, kate all stiff acting/same style became very boring. I always changed to other channel. Now SARs shown in BK, I just can’t see ah linda. Christine ng, joey meng, kristal tin are better but tvb always like to promote one best in Heavily tilted movie. Rightfully, they should ve few female starring in a movie.
i agreeee, linda’s acting in bk is kind of exaggerated half the time.. especially when she talks in english o_o her oh my god’s were annoying. i legitly thought she sort of improved over the years but i guess tvb dropped the ball on this one.
i like kate too, i think her acting’s been really solid and pretty natural compared to a lot of actresses.
Agree with you on Linda. I’m not seeing anything worthy of TV Queen in BK. I prefer Kate, who could have taken it last year if not for Tavia. Despite all the criticisms of her high heels in SS, her acting itself was great, especially the emotional scenes. Besides, I have a feeling TVB is looking to give it to her since they’re arranging for another one of her dramas, Bounty Lady, to air before the awards.

Kate’s acting has so many flaws in SS. If she’s to win it better be for a standout performance in Dayo’s series.
They are just making news. Linda is one of the five fadans, among the five, Myolie and Tavia had already gotten it, so they think it’s time for another fadan to win this. (They think the Best Actress title is about the five fadans taking turns to win or what ) Kate’s role in SS wasn’t good, Fala got HEAVILY criticised by her acting and she left TVB, so the media just thinks Linda looks like the one who has the highest chance.
I don’t think she is ready though, not Kate and Fala either. Tavia got it last year because she is ready for the title already, her nominated work wasn’t her best, but 15 years of experience they just think its time for her.
If TVB really had to choose one from the first line actress, I’d rather Tavia win.
As for Best Actor, Kenneth is good, let’s see how’s his performance in OC2, if the rating is good, there he goes.

Ugh, lindas acting is nothing great. I could see many second line actresses pulling it off and I think Nancy might’ve even done a better job of it. Especially the distress parts, Linda just pouted and was all like sammmmm, help me.

It really depends on your character… Nancy had an interesting role to portray in TITS2, but Linda seems to be receiving a similar character in the drama she acts in.
Kenneth is right, it’s a sequel after all and we’re not going to see much changes. I think it would be a good series but best actor? Not sure. As for Linda, sorry her character as Rachel so far is just a love interest it would be more appropriate for her to be nominated for Favorite character but even I don’t see her winning that award with that character let alone for Best Actress. I think she has a better chance next year for Tiger Cubs 2, the series does look intense and her character seems more heavy than her past roles which could be different.
Since Tavia won last year, highly doubt she would win again unless she shows great performances in THC 2 then it’s very unlikely though I didn enjoyed her performance in AGWTC 2 but she’s not going to be nominated for that at all. Bounty Lady is airing 3 weeks before the awards and if Kate does well then she has a pretty high chance of taking home the award but comedies usually aren’t the strongest genre and the past “winners” won from heavyweight dramas which Bounty Lady isn’t at all. I honestly can’t see who will win at all and I’m pretty sure they’re crowning the younger actresses but out of Linda and Kate? I would prefer Kate at least she did fine in her role in Sniper while for Linda, her character was so hyped and anticipated but only lead to a disappointment as we’re almost done with the series and her character so far hasn’t contribute much to the plot just a love interest, without Ruco she would have no story at all.
For Best Actor it seems like Moses is the likely choice, I heard he’s doing well in Will Power. I wouldn’t go around saying Kenneth since the series hasn’t aired yet and I’m just surprised how the audiences are already rooting for him, just because the first series was a success doesn’t mean the second one will be the same…not that I’m hoping it would flop but seeing so many new characters and love triangles added it just made it a bit more less interesting but I do hope they’ll continue the message they showed in the first one. Hope it won’t be another Triumph 2 where it was all about romance and that Kenneth’s character won’t revolve all around that part of his life in the series.

I hate Linda in BK, her english is good but most of her lines are over exaggerated and too many of her lines are in english. Esther was amazing and her crying scenes were so emotional. She is the best actress!

TVB was supposedly set on giving Tavia the award in the year of BTROC, but there was way too much support for Sheren Tang and Rosy Business. People said they would go out on the streets and protest if Sheren didn’t win. Ultimately, TVB had to give in and award it to a non-biological daughter. Then Tavia only had so-so roles until last year.

Sometimes the hardest roles to act are characters that are not that dramatic and not evil. just cuz an actor portrays an evil role, does not necessarily mean it requires “better” acting skills. Linda has been in the industry for 10 years..and although she has acted many good girl characters in the past, we should look past that and see the details in her performance. i think her acting was very natural and believable in BK..and you must understand that Rachel is a young girl who was brought up in Canada..so naturally she would speak with a very North American tone…hence the OMGs and a very child-like personality..

Her english in Brother’s Keeper was so dramatic. I am born and raised in Canada and I can tell you this much, the way she talks is like a valley girl. She should have done more research and should have at least tried to act with a British accent. She grew up in England in the drama yes? It would make sense since the storyline was that her father who is a entrepreneur has several wives and he sent his children abroad for school.
I know, she went over w/so called fluent english. Very annoying to listen to her switching back n forth actually….

I truly believe that Ruco Chan is the most deserving out of all the male actors this year. As for the female actress of the year …. I really want Joey Meng to take it home but we all know that’s not happening.
Also Kenneth Ma may have won in some people’s minds but he barely starred in any big productions this year , except for Hippocratic Crush. So there’s no way he can win with just one drama. Ruco Chan or Roger Kwok has a higher chance of winning if you ask me.

Although seniority plays a factor, Linda still has a long contract with TVB. So, it’s “ok” not to award her, which leaves Kate as the other alternative. Tavia is also a candidate, but she won last year already. Too bad bc out of the fadans, she gave a solid performance.
As for Moses, he’s do quite well in Will Power, and it seems like TVB want him to stay.
It might not be Kenneth’s year. He should have won last year. It’s def not Ruco’s turn yet bc of seniority. It wouldn’t take him long though since he just needs another role that captures the audience.
Ruco should win for Brother’s Keeper. His role as Sam was as a complex semi-villain and this type of role is always difficult to portray cos if you overdo the villain part, people end up hating you; yet if you overdo the good part, people will criticise you as too good to be true. A successful portrayal of a semi-villain wld be one who makes the audience sympathise with him despite the bad he has done and i think Ruco manages the fine balance very well in BK. I’m so tired of reading that Francis or Chilam deserve to win for their roles in TITS2. Just wanna ask, how difficult is it to act in a what’s essentially a love drama, portraying a serious pilot or a cool playboy pilot? Granted their roles are very popular (though i’m one of those who fail to fall under their charm)but isnt BA about acting (or so it should)and not about popularity of the character? Ruco’s role as Sam was challenging, not only for the complexity of that character but it was also physically demanding; nevertheless, Ruco tackled all those action scenes very well too. As for the dramatic/emotional scenes, his acting is top-notch, conveying a multitude of emotions on his face with a tight little smile, the darting of his eyes or raising of an eyebrow for example, and also the persuasiveness with which he delivers his lines. Don’t think KM’s acting is up to Ruco’s level though KM seems to be a likeable person. If KM wins over Ruco, that’ll be a gross injustice and a big joke (on KM).

Francis Ng on the other hand, he doesn’t have a lot to say aside from lecturing Holiday and Issac, otherwise… every single expression, body movement and emotion is extremely crucial to carry out the scene’s atmosphere. Which I doubt anybody would disagree, Francis Ng did a fantastic job at.

Kenneth Ma has to polish his acting skills to catch up to Ruco Chan’s talent as an actor. I’m rooting for Ruco Chan. As for Linda Chung getting the award for Best Actress, that has got to be the biggest joke this year if TVB really give it to her. Not even Kate Tsui is Best Actress material in my humble opinion as I find her acting skills simply mediocre. Krystal Tin gets my vote for the best actress award.

I think it will depend on who the judges are imo. If they are TVB cheerleaders, than I think we can expect it to go to whoever they struck a deal with. If they are unrelated celebrity “outsiders” than I hope we will be in for a surprise.

I can’t come up with a reasonable choice but between Kate and Linda, I’d go with Linda. Best actor should go to Francis based on pure talent but factoring everything else, I think Kenneth is a good choice. Personally I really liked Bosco in ACOH but THC2 isn’t out yet so I’ll hold my judgement.

There are contenders and there are pretenders for TVB awards. My strong suspicions are that TVB will give their awards to pretenders which will create more of a negative media sensation. only Remember TVB is a spineless organization worried about their bottom-line.

@windy, agree with you. I’m so tired of reading about TITS2 and how great it is. I watched a few episodes and all that fluff was getting my eyes and brain, i just couldn’t carry on. Never been a fan of Francis, i remember watching him in Bride with White Hair and tot he was terrible. Chilam too, old man like him trying to act young, what a turn off! Sick of Sam Gor and Cool Mor, when will we hear the last of them?

You are right as well. Perhaps HK audiences really have NO CHOICE at the moment. All the scripts and plots are so lame. The only one I watched this year is Brothers Keepers cuz of Ruco, it’s not the best either but it’s bearable at least.

Yup, like a pedophile. haha, sorry to confuse you w/the cantonese metaphor hhaha… thats how i feel when i watch Francis Ng w/too much younger mainland actresses. So unflattering when you see hsi wrinkles too ahha… Chi Lam, I havent watched anything of him since that series he did w/snake woman so I don’t about him but i am sure he’s not much better but he is better if in comparison to Francis Ng i guess. Sometimes Chi Lam still have that boyish look esp when hes next to the wife.
I think HK audience has no choice, they are stuck with tvb – but TVB REALLY should buck up.

I love Linda, but I have to say that her role in Brother’s Keeper is very average, not her acting but her character. I felt that she didn’t even have enough screen time on the show to be judged and entitled the title of TV queen, like c’mon. She is one of the female leads but I felt as if she was more of a supporting role instead. Crystal Tin probably had more screen time then her in the show.
I also wanted to add that her character was so average in the show that her acting was nothing spectacular. If TVB is going to give her that title, I hope it’s not from Brother’s Keeper… that would be a big disappointment. It’s not her time yet, I don’t know why TVB is rushing for her to get it. Especially considering Linda is (i don’t think) not leaving the company any time soon.
Since Linda has a reputation of being the good girl who’s loved by everyone the voting by crews this year might help her win despite her plain and forgettable acting in BK. The crews and producers might want to push her up because of her good obedient girl manners which never give them any trouble.
All this talk about Tavia, Kate and Linda goes to show that as an audience we often overlook talent for appearance.
While watching BK, I definitely see Linda’s drastic improvement and hardwork. However, I do not believe her acting can come close to veterans such as Kristal Tin. Though lagging behind Linda in facial beauty and neat costumes, Kristal won my heart with her genuine acting skills.
When “Rachel” in BK goes through her breakup, I pity and feel sorry for her. However, when “Ah Ying” endures a similar incident and breaks up with her boyfriend, she delicately portrays every bit of emotion that can carry the audience with her. The pain behind the heartbreak and the betrayal can be echoed in every dialogue she engages in. While I can only feel pity for Rachel, I can cry for Ah Ying as if I was in her shoes.
TVB often passes out awards to those with more “star power” and overlooks pure talent like passing over on Sheren Tang’s War & Beauty performance and picking Gigi Lai for her beauty and popularity. However, if TVB wants to reestablish itself with its family culture and salvage its image as a reputable TV network, it must begin with new priorities for talent over materialistic and frivolous acting.
Afterall, who can argue that Kristal Tin did not effective portray her role as Ah Ying? No one can contest to her acting the same way Mandy Wong was destined to win for her great performance in L’Escargot.
Step up your game, TVB and fellow BK viewers. Recognize the talent. Give the veterans their long deserved appreciation.
I agree, Ah ying took the spotline for female presence than Linda C by a long shot. Linda is just Linda as she usually is u know, her character is so average that we often overlook that she is the lead. Ruco, even thou he turns bad, he’s still got powerful male lead presence. I don’t feel for Linda C’s pain at all when they broke up, I can’t believe the shameful woman Ankie is gone just like that too cuz even she is more interesting to watch IMO.
Ah Ying, I know she nailed it in that catfight w/that woman too…hahah who isn’t rooting for her? She’s just great in her role. Edwin, same goody goody role as Linda, he’s not interesting to watch IMO but he seems OK in these sort of weak and dorky characters.
Agree, Linda is just not very interesting- whatever character she plays.
So basically, all the goody-goody roles are boring. Evil and sinister characters are interesting. Or perhaps, the protagonists are just too cliche.

I guess acting as the shrew gets you noticed more than the pretty-pretty type. Frankly, Rachel in BK is starting to make me dislike her for her hard-heartedness though i 100% understood her fury and fully empathised with her in the beginning. For gawd’s sake, that man made a mistake but he was truly remorseful. On account of everything that he had done for her and their long relationship, couldn’t she just soften a little after such a long time and agreed to a trial reconciliation? She seems the type to bear a grudge for the rest of her life, geez!
Have you changed your stand on Rachel and her OTT reaction? Or was it someone else?

Yeah, normally I don’t think any woman should take back a cheating jerk but it seems a little different in Ruco’s case. I mean, generally he’s not a bad guy at all but moments of greed and ambition did get to his head. And the obvious seducer is pretty and rich so i doubt anyone can control themselves but he did try. haha… Perhaps it will be a happy ending I mean TVB is known to have kind of cheesy endings? I am not one that love a happy ending, i can always accept a sad ending as long as it makes sense and still find it an overall enjoyable series.

Exactly here. What’s with the fuss by press about Linda winning this year when she did a plain and bad job as Rachel? Her only good scenes are whenever she need to shed tears. The rest are inconsistent and ranged from OTT to awkward, just unacceptable. Ruco and Kristal are the true winners from BK but they are suffering from TVB and the press politics.
TL;DR
Linda didn’t do jack to deserve to win this year. Her role in Brother’s Keeper is zero to nonexistent, other than whining and crying. The ideal candidate would probably be Ms. Tavia again (who also doesn’t deserve it…) since she has a big role coming up in THC 2 >.>

Tavia’s acting is good in AGWTC 2 and Linda is fine in brother’s keeper is just that she’s not up to the tv queen standard yet.Hope Tavia wins tv queen again as she potray her “crazy killer” character very well in AGWTC 2.But of course she would not be nominated with that character.So hope that her character in THC 2 would not be boring.

Same here. BK is honestly the best series from TVB this year but I don’t get what’s the fuss from the press about Linda winning the BA award? Is there some conspiracy between TVB and the press? God! For everyone’s info Kristal was voted the Top Favourite Character in BK by audience and her votes was leading the rest by a huge margin. The results was announced at TVB special live event for BK finale on Sat night.
haha, she probably got those votes before her supporters watched that episode where she advised Ah Shun to let Sam learn his lesson for his heinous crimes against mankind by abandoning him in his moment of need. Sam would have won most popular if voting had closed after the finale and not before.

I don’t understand why everyone is hating on Ying because she advised Shun to ditch Sam. Shouldn’t Rachel be more hated? Ying doesn’t even know Sam well and yet Rachel called the cops after dating Sam for so long. IMO, Ying should be forgiven because she does not know Sam’s character and hence can be hasty in her judgement. Besides, she’s smitten with Shun and it’s in her instincts to prioritise Shun before Sam.
Saying that Ying shouldn’t deserve the votes just because she didn’t support Sam is just… wrong.
drey, it’s not just me saying, it’s in the forums like tvb forum and the china forums. Yes it’s true she doesn’t know Sam as well as Rachel and that being the case, shouldn’t she be the least qualified person to judge him?
It’s true Ying isn’t qualified to judge Sam, but we can’t judge Ying’s character based on that. I’m not a Ruco/Sam hater (in fact I support Ruco a lot), but I’m just saying we shouldn’t judge a character based on just one scene alone. I’m a little surprised why Ying won Sam by such a large margin though.
maybe people not liking Sam’s character in the later episodes, before they knew that in the end he would redeem himself.
