Kent Cheng Lost $2 Million Especially For Wayne Lai

Wayne Lai (黎耀祥), Kent Cheng (鄭則士), Kristal Tin (田蕊妮), and Natalie Tong <唐詩詠> had a costume fitting yesterday for new drama The King Makers <造王者>.  Wayne revealed that this drama was the male version of Beyond The Realm of Conscience <宮心計>.

As it turned out, Wayne had actually collaborated before with Kent Gor and upon hearing that Kent Gor had rejected a mainland drama to be involved in this production, Wayne remarked, “There’s no other actor like Kent Gor in TVB. When I learnt that Kent Gor didn’t look down on me, I felt really happy. Our chemistry will create sparks!” (Will your collaboration with him end up like what happened between Zhou Xun (周迅) and Zhao Wei (趙薇) and hence can’t get along well with each other?) “TVB isn’t an advocate of such things like dividing what’s his and what’s mine. Everyone is like a family here in TVB.”

Kent Cheng admitted that he lost the opportunity of making $2 million HKD in accepting to film The King Makers. “If TVB wanted to find a good acting partner for me, Wayne is definitely their first choice lahs!” (Wayne thanked you for not looking down on him.) “Why did Wayne say my lines?” (Kent-Gor was trying to imply that he felt it should be the other way around, that he should be the one thanking Wayne.) “Wayne is a TV King lehs!”

The King Makers is produced by Leung Choi Yuen (梁材遠). It also stars Pierre Ngo (敖嘉年 ), Vivien Yeo (楊秀惠), Elaine Yiu (姚子羚), Ben Wong (黃智賢), Oceane Zhu (朱璇), Patrick Tang (鄧健泓), Lai Lok Yi (黎諾懿), Florence Kwok (郭少芸), Janet Chow (周家蔚), Jack Wu (胡諾言), Eric Li (李天翔), Kwok Fung (郭峰), Lee Kwok Lun (李國麟), Sek Sau (石修), Cheung Kwok Keung (張國強 ), King Kong (金剛), and other cast members.

Ah K: Male version of “Beyond the Realm of Conscience”? I wasn’t a fan of “Beyond” but with such a solid cast with big names like Kent Cheng, Wayne Lai and Kristal Tin, I’m sure it will turn out to be one smashing series.

I’m all for Kent Cheng and Wayne Lai’s collaboration together cause I remember liking their flawless chemistry as foes with opposing stands in “The Greatness of a Hero” where Kent acted as a loyal premiere, Di Renjie, while Wayne acted as the evil, scheming and ambitious nephew of the Empress. It was also one of the many breakthrough performances of Wayne back then before he turned this famous.

  1. Since the success of “War and Beauty,” many ancient dramas have set the imperial palace and its inhabitants as the central focus. What do you think of this trend? Enjoy it? End it already?

I prefer if they can shift the focus a little and make some ancient dramas on some interesting historical scholars, such as Li Bai. Such a backdrop can pave the way for interesting intellectual and philosophical dialogue. Wayne Lai can play Li Bai; he would excel in the role!

This would be interesting, but only if TVB is does a good job with a rich script! 😀

On the other hand, this new series reminds me of what I’m watching now, Sentinel. I didn’t like BTROC, but WAB was okay the second time I watched it.

      1. @ Chriselle
Do you like Sentinel? I was watching the first like ten episodes, but cause I had an exam I stoped. But I did find it kinda boring, but after the tenth episode does it get better?

      2. TLOAS is boring and there are a lot of miscast and the characters age are unbelievable. Steven is just doing what he always do in ancient series like this and Kenneth is just too innocent to me but more acceptable than his overacting in GUF :D.

Power Chan shocked me because for the first time I think he’s not doing a good job and one of the bad miscast in a TVB series, I can’t take him as a King!

      3. @Yee,

Yeah, I agree that the initial episodes were quite boring, but it picks up when Kenneth’s evil plans are being carried out. But still, right now, no one is aware of his villainess except Steven, who still trusts him despite knowing. Knowing that the entire series is focused on discovering Kenneth’s evil intentions to usurp the throne is kinda draggy.

Also, I find the inner harem fight between the concubines (Elaine vs. Grace) in the beginning to be unnecessary. Basically, I don’t like idle characters like Power and Elaine who are either not interested in fighting back or is still blindly trusting the wrong people. I was hoping for some battle of wits between the males, but it seems like everyone is under a spell and Kenneth is gaining more and more power. The fact that he’s the only ambitious character makes the battle lackluster and one-sided.

The ‘rebelling against the Qing’ movement reminds me of numerous of Jin Yong adaptions. Storyline is so repetitive and we all know they are going to fail. The only question is how. But I doubt TVB can come up with something brilliant.

      4. “Power Chan shocked me because for the first time I think he’s not doing a good job and one of the bad miscast in a TVB series, I can’t take him as a King!”

I agree! Power still looks like a prankster to me. I think he is most enjoyable as a comedian actor. Throughout the series, I also thought he was trying too hard to act in a role that didn’t belong to him. But I think in general, Leung Choi Yuen casted some of TVB’s most boring actors and actresses to star in this show. Yet on Weibo, he appeared to have expectations for this series. Uh…

      5. Quoting lol: Power Chan shocked me because for the first time I think he’s not doing a good job and one of the bad miscast in a TVB series, I can’t take him as a King!

I’m not watching this drama, so anybody who is watching this, is Power Chan that bad? Or is it the writing and the character fault? I’m curious. I’ve always enjoyed Power’s acting.

      6. @Masaharu,

Not horribly bad, just unfit, let’s say. The acting is there (but kinda boring), but he just look physically like a eunuch more, lol. And he’s older than Kenneth in real life, but he is the third brother and Kenneth is the second brother.

      7. @Chriselle: It’s like Sharon is first princess and Charmaine is third princess.

      8. @ Chriselle
Thanks for the little update, don’t think I would watch it though. I’m kinda more into the comedic ancient series if I were to watch an ancient serie. I’m a “Juk Sing” that know nothing about anicient chinese history, nor do I really care for it. Esspecially since this is fictional. I really hate characters that have such long lines and my lack of a chinese vocabulary kinda makes me not understand it so well. The main reason I started watching is because I’m like a new Kenneth Ma fan, and I have to agree from what I saw he is pretty good as a two face. His speeach to his grandma about her not loving him as much as the emperor was touching.
Yea, from what I’ve seen of Power Chan, I agree that he is better fit in comedic series. I especially liked him in Twilight Investigation, how he guided Linda Chung to understnad what it was like to be a ghose. Also he had great chemistry with Joyce Tang in that women witht he women in that makeup compagny last year…What was that called? Whatever…
Lol…that was like a review of the series what i’ve only seen so little of…

    2. I think TVB should do less of this palace series too although I think QOQ has potential to be good.

    3. Li Bai? In my imagination, Li Bai dun look like Wayne at all. He should look more soft, gentle and stronger. Li Bai is a scholar but his sword skill is very well. He is a general scholar.

      1. Fox,
“He should look more soft, gentle and stronger. Li Bai is a scholar but his sword skill is very well. ”

I guess Raymond Lam would also make a captivating young Li Bai. Wayne is still suitable as he portrays an ancient scholar very well.

      2. You just reminded me that LF has never act a scholar before. I wish to see one for a long while but have never seen.

Young LF, old Wayne? Haha, it’s hard to imagine. They just look… too different.

I like Wayne in scholar look but still can’t match Wayne with Li Bai. Maybe Wayne remind me of 杜甫 more.

      3. Anyone still remember the series Lady Yang with Anne Heung and Kong Wah. The supporting actor play Li Bai in there is a perfect image of how I imagine Li Bai looks like.

  2. whoa, strong male cast!! but the female….leaves much to be desired.

  3. oh interesting cast! 😀 I enjoy watching both Kent and Wayne’s acting. I like how their have a talent in acting rather than just good looks though I’m not imply anything. lol

  4. Kent Cheng and Wayne Lai casting reminds me of another TVB costume drama a few years ago. And no way, please don’t make this a male version of 宮心計

  5. wow natalie is everywhere O.O

Wait isnt Kingdom Yuen a part of the cast? Or did she not make it to the costume fitting?

  6. The females cast do look very weak.

Does anyone notice Chris Lai’s costume looks familiar? It looks the same as Moses CMBL costume or perhaps Joe Ma’s Relic of an Emissary costume? Cheap TVB on low-budget haha…..

    1. I don’t see what’s the problem with recycling costume. They already put so much effort into the costume. Using them once and not use again will be a waste of money, effort and materials.

      1. One people start to notice it…I think it’s time for a change. Most of the costumes they’ve had for more than five years. It’s time for an update. They could always recycle the fabric to make more. It could save a lot of fabric from being wasteed. Now that the world is trying to go “green”

      2. Steven Ma has lamented in his latest interview that audience will make fun of this and will distract from enjoying the story. They could’ve made changes to the costumes.

    1. i heard he will play the ‘1st Prince’ and Chris will play the other Prince…. Wayne and Kent will help each prince to become king.

    2. Gosh, I thought he is Kenny Wong and realize that Kanin is this guy.

  7. sorta excited abt this. Wayne as the villain perhaps? For a moment tis is old news. And what a deceptive title and good to read their mutual respect for one another. If tis is male ver of btroc i hope no one goes mad or break into windmill song.

  8. With so many good, well-known artists such as Ken Gor, Wayne Lai, Cheung Kwok Keung, Kwok Fung, etc… this surely should be a “must-see” drama. Although I am not usually a fan of ancient dramas I did quite like “Realm” because of the cast and so I hope it should be the same this time.

  9. I was pretty excited for this until I heard that the writers for this drama are also the same writers for “The Life and Times of a Sentinel”, and “Sentinel” isn’t a very well-written drama. But considering that Kent Cheng is willing to lose money to film this, and he usually does good stuff, I think this drama wouldn’t be that bad.

  10. I notice that all the TVB series Kent Cheng starred in are produced by Leung Choi Yuen.

Is it the case of only Producer Leung is interested in working with Kent Cheng or Kent only works with Producer Leung?

This series reminded me very much of ‘he Greatness of a Hero’.

  11. I would like to see Wayne Lai and Michael Tse in a modern drama together. I think the two would be great acting against each other since both are, to me, similar in range, style and ability. I suppose TVB doesn’t really cast two ‘promoted’ male leads of similar seniority in the same series. Some sort of scripting issue or TVB politics?
