Kevin Cheng On Grace Chan’s Acting: “Trying Too Hard”
Negative reviews on Grace Chan’s (陳凱琳) performance in the TVB anniversary drama Captain of Destiny <張保仔> is currently a hot topic among discussion forums. At the TVB Anniversary Lighting Ceremony held a few days ago, Film King Anthony Wong (黃秋生) gave his honest thoughts on Grace’s acting in the pirate drama, describing her performance in the series as “a nuisance.” However, he did praise the 24-year-old rookie, exclaiming that she is one of the few newcoming actresses with great character.
Grace’s boyfriend, Kevin Cheng (鄭嘉穎), agreed with Anthony’s critique. The Blue Veins <殭> star recently made a public appearance for a charity event, and he too was asked for his honest opinions on Grace’s over-the-top delivery and acting in Captain of Destiny.
“There is a process to everything,” Kevin said. “She is not bad for a rookie, but you cannot skip high school and go straight to college after primary school. You need to go to high school so you can build your foundation. At the moment, [Grace] is just at her starting point.”
Kevin said he has read the reports about Anthony’s criticism on Grace and agreed with his points. “Anthony was very fair in his review. [Grace] is actually very fortunate. When I was a rookie I did not have seniors who watched over me like this. Rookies can improve much faster with these reviews. I don’t think it’s necessarily a good thing for a rookie to receive praises so early in their careers.”
When asked for his honest thoughts on Grace’s acting, Kevin said, “Overall, she’s using too much strength. Trying too hard. If you use so much strength in every scene, it cancels out everything. She is a very smart girl and I believe she will vastly improve.”

Appreciate the honesty, Kevin.
@anon
Well, he can’t say I love her no matter what, can he?
LOL….
@anon yes, agreed. props to kevin for being honest. if even he can see that in her acting, we are not being overly picky about it.
Kevin is very honest and I do think he is right. Grace has potential so her problem is just too much effort. When she calms down she will be better.
she has already gained an established boyfriend in the industry. relationship is only 6 months…acting requires experience and that needs time.
it was reported that her mother looks down on ruco for only having secondary education…what’s the big deal about grace? ruco can sing and act. other than having kevin cheng as a boyfriend, she is nothing.
@janet72 Really. Ruco wanted to date her last time ?
@celin false
@isay…I did read it somewhere here or on another website that grace and ruco did get together…but her mother visited and discovered ruco only had secondary education and objected to the relationship.
@janet72 I will rubbish that rumour.If any it will be Kelly Fu. Ruco is not into “1” body type.
@janet72 Don’t tell me you believe everything you read! Every time Ruco has a new female co-star or he’s seen with female company, the gossip mags go to town with news of a budding underground romance that has been brewing for either 3 or 6 months (always these 2 magic figures so take your pick). Ruco himself said it, not once but twice, and on national TV no less that Grace isn’t his cup of tea. Give him some credit, he can have his pick of any woman he wants.
@janet72 relax, it’s NOT true about Ruco and Grace. Ruco said it point blank at the Lighting Ceremony interview which was recently broadcast on HK TV and to countries like SG and MY that he and Grace are “不可能“ ie, impossible. I love his frankness and Grace was publicly snubbed by him, hahahhah.
@isay I like ruco very much. he has the charm.
That was a pretty good comment from Kevin. I don’t understand why people just blame on the actor/actress. They should blame on the producers too. Being an experienced actor or actress doesn’t mean you are good at EVERY movie you are in it. It just that you get a good script and you happen to be good on that specific role
