Pianist Li Yundi‘s (李雲迪) solicitation of sex services multiple times, which is illegal in China, is still sending shock waves throughout the entertainment industry. His protégé, Malaysian pianist/ influencer Cathryn Li (李元玲) also expressed her alarm over the scandal.

Cathryn had met Li Yundi while she was studying in England, and was arranged by her music institution to be mentored by Li Yundi. Expressing her shock over Li Yundi’s detainment, Cathryn posted, “I only know he is a talented pianist, and he is a nice person.”

As Cathryn is known for her sexy social media posts, many followers wondered whether the pair ever had any illicit relations. The 32-year-old responded, “We never crossed the boundaries of a teacher-student relationship.”

Teacher Expresses Disappointment in Li Yundi’s Character

Although Li Yundi received a strict family upbringing and received international acclaim for his piano skills at the age of 18, his current scandal makes many question his moral character.

Li Yundi’s teacher, famous piano educator Dan Zhaoyi (但昭義), is reacting in anger and extreme disappointment, “I’m very angry. Li Yundi makes me feel very upset! As a public figure, he should hold himself in strict regard on all levels, and not make such a big mistake! He is my student–he made a big mistake, and should bear the legal responsibility and learn the lessons of life. He is still young and only in his 30s. I hope that after he comes out, he will be given a chance to correct his mistakes and take the right path.”

Once a celebrated pianist who enjoyed lucrative advertising deals and variety show appearances, Li Yundi has fallen off his high pedestal quickly. Given Chinese authorities’ Qing Lan movement, in which they are cracking down on celebrities’ illegal and unethical activities, Li Yundi is likely to be held accountable.
