Louis Koo Builds 61 Schools for Children in Need

In the past five years, Louis Koo (古天樂) has been secretly building public schools in mainland China to help young children in need of proper education. By the end of 2013, the Louis Koo Charitable Foundation had already successfully built 61 public schools spread across China in remote regions of Sichuan, Gansu, Guangxi, and Guizhou.

The Louis Koo Charitable Foundation was established in 2008 after the drastic earthquake that hit Sichuan, China. Schools and homes were destroyed, and families were left hopeless. Witnessing the problematic situation, Louis hoped to help the less fortunate through donations. All these years, he has kept a low profile regarding the good deeds he has done and preferred to keep them away from the limelight.

When the press earlier phoned Louis to ask about how much he had spent building the schools, he replied via his manager that he does not wish to talk about money and had only wanted to focus on helping those in need. Each year, Louis busies himself shooting films, advertisements, and attending promotional functions. Reportedly, he pocketed 236 million RMB in 2013. According to market estimations, it currently costs approximately 500,000 RMB to build one school in mainland China.

Besides making donations, Louis also closely monitored the building progress of his schools. He sent a few workers to supervise the procedures and made sure the buildings were constructed safely and solidly.  The 61 school buildings included lecture rooms and dormitories.

Louis’ fans were extremely touched by his good deeds and how he has always maintained such a low profile when discussing his charitable work. Netizens sent him thankful messages and expressed their gratitude.

    1. Totally agree!!! They really need to improve the education system in China/HK and give everyone a solid education.

      1. Solid education meaning it will include the ethics and moral teaching and not only focusing achieving the academic excellency.

One of my friends that grew up in Mainland China explained this to me and I thought I should share:

In kindergarten, students are busy learning elementary school material. Elementary school learning middle school, middle school learning high school and high school learning college. Once in college, you realize, you never learned what should be taught in kindergarten.

Kind of out of topic I guess but it was a small talk after reading about a Shanghai doctorate student poisoning his roommate over a small dispute and then in the interview, he felt no remorse on his action.

      2. @Pandamao,
I know what you mean. I have worked with many international students from mainland China and it is sad that many of them are spoiled brats with no morals. They were supposed to be college students but many acted like kindergarden students. I think when being a teacher, you do not teach just the academics to the morals of life as well so that they know how to be good people. I tried to teach my students that but sadly many of them do not listen and just brush it off thinking that all of the bad things they do is ok.

      3. This is shocking . Common sense and moral/ ethics education should be one of the top priorities taught to children as these become their ‘beacon/light’ throughout their lives. Even if it’s only 1%, that’s hella lot of numbers considering their population figure. Could this be people becoming more ‘materialistic’ ?

Having said that, I’m sure everyone agrees that it’s part of life’s teaching and applies to every citizen in every country.

      4. It take a village to raise a child but the most important thing for a child to learn before they’re send out to school or anywhere sense of right from wrong from the parents. You are what you teach.

      5. In the end no matter how good the school system is, there always going be some small incident that could mess up kids life. Here in united states, teens would shoot each other just because of gangs/trashing talking

  1. Awww My Idol “Yeung Gor”.. it’s so awesome to know that you are so humble with an amazing golden heart~

      1. Yang Guo/yeung Guo is the main character in the Jin Yong novel, Return of the Condor Heroes. Louis played that role in the 1995 remake with Carmen Lee as Xiao long nu made by TVB.

      2. Thanks, “Yang Guo” clears things up for me. I automatically think…

        Gor = 哥

      3. You are welcome yea, it should be Guo instead of Gor. I am not the best when it comes to Cantonese pin yin either. I am much better at mandarin pinyin.

    1. Yes, he was good in that character. He was the first Yeung Gor I know, then it was Andy Lau when tv replayed it.

  2. 61 X 500,000 RMB = 30,500,000 RMB

    30,500,000 RMB/CNY = 5,562,895 CAD

    30,500,000 RMB/CNY = 5,005,355 USD

    1. Just to clarify, this is through the Louis Koo Charitable Foundation, which I think includes donations from anyone (not just LK).

    2. They said 1 school should cost about 500k but did they really use 500k they could have used more. And buying the school supplies and hiring teacher and materials cost money too you know. It could cost more than 30millrmb or 5m usd. And you gotta pay people to build it.

  3. If only more celebrities and people are like him, then this world would have been so beautiful. How can a handsome, kind man like him not have a wife yet!?!?! Just throwing it out there, but I’m single….

    1. There are several other celebs they do charity work. Some others are Andy Lau, Tony Leung Chiu Wai(who also has his own charity with his wife Carina Lau called TLC), Jackie Chan, Takeshi kaneshiro(Jin Cheng Wu).,etc…

      1. I think as long as they do it with a good intention in their mind and heart, then it does not matter if it is low or high profile. Even if they tried to keep it a secret, many would find out anyways.

  4. What a great person. I wish more celebs would open up their hearts and wallets to help those in need.

I know i love Louis for a reason, and it has always been his good look, now i know he has a big heart, as well as being humble. I love him even more … more reasons to love him 🙂

    1. A lot more celebrities should donate and help the world like Louis Koo.

    2. I couldn’t agree with u more Winnie, Louis has a heart of gold. I’ve been taken by his charming ways and good looks but his charitable heart makes me love him more. Good on ya Louis!!! Helping others in need is a wonderful thing.

  5. Hey idol, I am so proud of you!! So humble…and having a loving heart too!! May God bless you and your family..

  6. Great heart. Hope to see more news like that than the bashes/twists/gossips from reporters.

  7. He’s a good guy, deal with it. We’ve all become so jaded from charity scandals and PR spin it’s hard not to question celebrity donations despite good intentions. It’s also a rule set by the charity organisation that to name the schools after the private donor’s name I think, he’s not that vain. As far as I know he has NEVER solicited press over this issue. It’s just his zealous fans making a big fuss over it and spreading it over social media. He’s just a regular guy who’s extremely private and actually pretty darn nice.

I think the media overestimated the amount he donated though. Check the official list

Not to say what he did wasn’t awesome. His charity foundation is registered in HK and mostly funded by himself, some of his older fans chip in as well

  8. Wow, Louis Koo’s level of hotness increased a few notches in my book too. What a beautiful soul who does good in a low key way. Amazing. The huge gulf emerging between the small population of mega rich and a large population of poor can be tackle with education and better paid employment.
