Louis Koo Talks About His Love for Food, Career, and Family
Louis Koo (古天樂) is not as quiet and mysterious as you may think he is. The 46-year-old actor, who has been in the industry since the mid-90’s, has always kept a low profile when it comes to his private life. Not much is known about his love life, and because of his mild personality, Louis has had a smooth, non-controversial entertainment career.
So what hobbies does Louis Koo have? What does he do in his free time? What makes Louis Koo very hyper? After a moment of thought, Louis said, “The only thing that really gets me hyper is food. I love to eat, but I’m also pretty picky about it too. I don’t eat fried food. I don’t eat sweets, and I don’t eat things that are too salty. But I love spicy food. Eating makes me very hyper. When I’m introduced to a new eating spot, I get really happy.”
Unlike many of his peers, Louis doesn’t mind reporters nagging him with questions about his love life. “You keep asking your question, and I’ll keep responding with no answer. I’m fine with that!” (Have you ever regretted joining the industry?) “What? I don’t want to always keep choosing. Since I’ve chosen this, I’m sticking with it. I’m the kind of person who does things wholeheartedly. Talk less, do more.”
“Most Frequent Roles are the Hardest to Do”
In his latest film Shed Skin Papa <脱皮爸爸>, which will start showing in Hong Kong this April, Louis plays a struggling film director who rekindles his estranged relationship with his father (played by Francis Ng) as his father sheds a layer of skin everyday that regains his youth. It was a role that Louis has never played before in his 2-decade film career.
“There are many roles that I haven’t tried yet,” said Louis. “No matter what kind of movie you’re doing, it’s always the same principle—bring that character to life. In my opinion, the hardest roles to do are always the ones that you do the most. For me, that is being a cop. I’ve played a cop in many films, and that is what makes it difficult. I need to come up with a brand new way to play the same role.”
Louis, now regarded as a senior actor in the industry, said he’s fortunate enough to not have encountered any bottlenecks during his career. “Every character I’ve played so far had different backgrounds and personalities.”
The Shed Skin Papa actor is a moviegoer himself, and his favorite genre is comedy. “But I will not watch horror!” he exclaimed. “Unless that movie got so popular that I have to watch it. I’m always flying around. I don’t want to get scared staying at hotels!” (So you’re afraid of ghosts?) “Of course!”
Work Keeps Him Fit
Louis has always carried a healthy and handsome image in front of the press, but in reality, Louis barely has time to even go to the gym. “Working everyday is already a lot of exercise, so I don’t purposefully keep fit,” he said. “I don’t even have a regular eating and sleeping schedule.”
As a fan of Star Wars, has Louis ever thought about tackling Hollywood? “It depends. I’m just going to stick to my role, and I have no plans for it. I barely get more that four hours of sleep everyday. No time to think about more.”
But despite his busy schedule, Louis said he would try to find time to cross out things from his bucket list. “I’ve been saying this for many years, but I’ve always wanted to witness the Great Migration [in Africa]. But this happens around September and October, so it’s hard for me to find the time to do it.”
When Louis was asked to list the most important things in his life, including family, love, and career, Louis said, “What’s the point of lining them up? It’s not a horse race.” (There has to be one that is most important to you!) “Since I’m working now, career comes first.” Louis then revealed that he still lives with his family, “When I don’t have to work in Hong Kong, then I go back home to live with them. Even if I have to film overseas, I would go back once in a while.”

I am surprised by this article in the sense about his personality being mild. Heard a lot of his explosive attitude but those when he was younger. I suppose age mellowed him.
He never won best actor yet right? I think at some point the cycle will reach him.
filming movies must take a lot of hard work for him to sleep less than four hours day. he films about 4-5 movies a year, each about 1.5 to 2 hours long. i think it must be alot of waiting for people, getting props ready, and memorizing the lines.
he looks so different now. Very obvious plastic surgery. Has anyone talked about his plastic surgery news i wonder?
@jesskitkat he’s all natural – just filled out more. it’s what happens to people when they get older, especially men.
