Maggie Cheung The Imposing Empress Puts Kenny Wong To Death

Yesterday, Maggie Cheung Ho Yee (張可頤) and Kenny Wong (黃德斌) filmed the trailer for upcoming drama,  Chronicles of Empress Lu《呂后傳》, which was to be shown in the 2012 TVB Sales Presentation.

On that fateful day, Maggie and Kenny were acting as Empress Lu and Han Xin respectively.

During the filming of it, Maggie gave off a deadly powerful aura of an empress as she put Kenny Wong’s Han Xin to death. On the other hand, Kenny Wong, who was suspended on wires for the scene, professed that he was severely swung here and there to the extent that he nearly couldn’t catch his breath.

Haven’t shot ancient periodic dramas for seven years now

Maggie revealed that she still didn’t know whether she would be reprising her role as the Empress when “Chronicles of Empress Lu” officially starts filming, “It is still too soon to tell as nothing is confirmed yet. In fact, I haven’t shot any ancient periodic drama ever since the year 2004. Coincidentally, I have previously also acted as Empress Lu many years ago in The Conqueror’s Story《楚漢驕雄》. However, as “Conqueror’s Story” was heavily based on the male characters and there wasn’t much room for development back then, given a chance, I would certainly be glad to act as Empress Lu for the second time.” When interviewed, Kenny expressed that everything has to wait till the company has made the arrangements.

Would have to think through it carefully upon being poached

It was known that Maggie was still under a per-series contract with TVB. Maggie divulged that TVB’s General Manager of Broadcasting Affairs, Stephen Chan (陳志雲), and his subordinate, TVB’s Production and Resource Director, Virginia Lok (樂易玲), separately came to personally discuss the possibility of a contract extension with her.

Asked whether they were asking her to sign a pay-package contract with them due to the rapidly decreasing rate of current Fadans in TVB, Maggie replied, “I currently feel extremely comfortable working with my own manager. For other matters, I would probably have to discuss them with my manager first. However, as an actress, the basic mentality is of course to have a good role and production to participate in.” (Reporter: Did Ricky Wong (王維基) [Chairman of new rival television station, City Telecom] try to poach you?) “If I said no, I would obviously be lying to you. Actually, we did discuss before but I still needed some time to think it through.”

Kenny, on the other hand, also admitted that, like many of his colleagues, he was also contacted by Ricky Wong and TVB had also approached him to discuss about the possibility of a contract renewal with them. However, as he was still currently busy filming the upcoming Lee Tim-Shing‘s (李添勝) TVB production, Ladder to Heaven《天梯》, he didn’t have the time to discuss with them and would hence consider about it at a later time.

  1. It’s Empress Lü Zhi. The letter 傳 means chronicles, so the direct translation of the title should be The Chronicles of Empress Lü.

    1. @sehseh:

Ohh okay, thanks for highlighting the error, will make the necessary amendments! 😀

  2. I do hope Maggie will take this role when filming starts, if it does since many TVB productions do not get filmed despite being in the sales presentation. I can’t imagine another actress taking the role.

    Who is Han Xin, historically?

    1. You are asking for who act Han Xin or who is Han Xin? Kenny acts Han Xin and Han Xin is a general of Liu Bang. He is a talented general but also an arrogant one. Han Xin died partly due to his arrogance.

      1. Thanks Fox! I meant who is Han Xin as I’ve asked ‘who is Han Xin, historically?”

      2. I don’t think anyone dies of his arrogance. I think rather he died because he forgot his own place.

      3. he died bc he made the wrong bet with a “small people” that killed him and put the blame on his wife.

      4. Han Xin died because Liu Bang was someone who can go through hardship with you but not good days.

An Emperor who got to the throne through revolution will fear that someone will do the same to him. Han Xin was a talented man and a great general who has many followers. Of course, Liu Bang will fear him.

      5. Liu Bang is a siu ren but a smart siu ren. If wanna blame, Han Xin should blame himself for not as smart as Liu Bang. Being a siu ren is easy, but a siu ren can become a king and can conquer the kingdom for long time, it’s Liu Bang’s smart head.

Han Xin, lol, he isn’t a junzi at all. And of course, most of the real junzi (not the one who just show face as junzi) can’t do big stuffs. Politics isn’t something for naive kids.

      6. Ahhh, again he died because he didn’t know his position. Or sometimes he knew but being smarter than the emperor isn’t always the best.

      7. Han Xin might have had a moral code to follow that prevented him to overthrow that sie ren.

      8. @ exoidus

“Han Xin might have had a moral code to follow that prevented him to overthrow that sie ren.”

Yes, and Han Xin has shown this code when he was persuaded by Kuai Tong to rebel against Liu Bang and he refused.

I guess Zhang Liang was smarter. Knowing what kind of person Liu Bang, he opted to resign from state affairs when the time was right.

But, I find Chen Ping the smartest. He was able to stay as Prime Minister through out Liu Bang and Lü Zhi’s reign and help seize back the throne/power from the Lü family to the Liu family.

      9. @exoidus: Yes, like Kidd said, Han Xin showed his so-called moral code by that action.

Han Xin is called a “siu ren” because he agreed to climb through the groin of a bullier when he was young.

Chen Ping is the smartest among the guys under Liu Bang. Tiu Xia is a simple guy so Liu Bang dun have to prevent him.

      10. “Han Xin is called a “siu ren” because he agreed to climb through the groin of a bullier when he was young.”

I don’t consider that act as ‘xiao ren’ or shameful. Killing that bully serves no purpose other than to soothe one’s pride. Like what Han Xin analysed, killing that guy means killing himself because he will be arrested for murder and sentence to death. Bearing humiliation for that moment give him opportunity to achieve success later.

      11. i don’t see that act would elevate to siu ren level. he did that to survive and he didn’t betray his friends and allies like the true siu ren Liu Bang

      12. You don’t get? The history evaluate his action as “siu ren”. Junzi and siu ren evaluation of ancient ppl are different to us now.

And if you wanna know, Han Xin is accused for conquered Qi King without the order of Liu Bang. Qi King was lied to make friend with Liu, but Han Xin, when Qi King took back the army, took time to attack Qi country and killed Qi King, even when he surrendered.

Some evaluated Han Xin as a person who is too blindly loyal to Liu Bang.

      13. @ Fox

Thanks for reminding me. I did forget about that case. I dislike what Han Xin did in that case. He caused Li Yi Ji’s painful death.

      1. Yes, he was rather good wasn’t he? Didn’t Maggie played the same character? Oh, yes she was./ I hope she gets to play her properly this time, ask Wayne to act as Han Xin again.

      2. I am now watching The Conqueror’s Story, the story itself, e.g. the battle strategies, are very nice because it’s based on historical events.

Great show! TVB should do something like that again, more like Red Cliff, with the good lookers e.g. Ray, Ron, Ruco etc.

Is Xiang Yi a learned nobleman or warrior in history? I googled the characters in wikipedia and read up on them. How is he despicted in real life, cos’ the actor in The Conqueror’s Story, forgot his name, he painted his face with tan paint or something, and pasted black bushy eyebrows, he looked more like “bao gong” to me?

Know of any good Chinese history sites in English?

        Thanks!

      3. TVB made a series on 3 Kingdoms, and it’s called Back to 3 Kingdoms. But sorry, I have no hope on this one.

  3. @Funn: Ahhh, again he died because he didn’t know his position. Or sometimes he knew but being smarter than the emperor isn’t always the best.

Reminds me of Yang Xiu in the Romance of 3 Kingdoms who too supposedly got killed for being too smart, too boastful, and yes didn’t know his position.

  4. I hope Maggie does film Empress Lu. There’s also rumors she’ll be in The Grand Eunuch. Maggie has a knack for these types of roles. I’d prefer her do those 2 series rather than War and Beauty 2. WB2 theme has already been overused in various productions.

  5. Talk about Maggie, how was her in the first episode of Forensic Heroes? Any comments?

  6. Actually I find Maggie very lucky, most of her shows are good & has high ratings.
