Mandy Wong’s Passion for Aromatherapy
Since youth, Mandy Wong (黃智雯) has developed a habit of collecting an assortment of different aromas to make scented jars and candles. During exam weeks in school, she would light scented candles to de-stress and calm herself to sleep. Influenced by her mother, who sells aromatherapy products at her beauty store, Mandy takes time to learn the different fragrances and their different benefits.
Sometimes, her experiences with aromas can be quite dangerous. During Mid-Autumn Festival one year, while Mandy was still in elementary school, she accidentally lit her hair on fire when she was trying to burn a scented herb.
“My cousins and I were on the rooftop with our lanterns. I remember my hair was very long, and when I bent down to light the herb, I was still fooling around with my cousin. I didn’t realize that my hair was so close to the fire, so the ends of my hair caught on fire! Good thing my family saw it and immediately helped to put it out. I was so scared and all I could do was cry. From then on, I became very afraid of fire!”
Her incident with fire did not scary Mandy away from studying fragrances. After graduating school, she became a stewardess, and had the opportunity to travel around the world to collect different scents. “I saved a lot [of products] at home. It’s to the point where they would be my first option as gifts.”
When it comes to her favorite candles, Mandy chose one product that had three different scents. “Once the top layer finishes burning, a new scent comes. These are available in Hong Kong, but it’s always out of stock. I asked my friend from Australia to buy some for me.”
