Michelle Chen Plays Xiao Zhan’s Mother in “The Legend of the Hidden Sea”

Attaining surging popularity with The Untamed <陳情令> and Joy of Life <慶餘年>, actor Sean Xiao Zhan (肖戰) has been busy filming The Legend of the Hidden Sea <藏海傳> with co-star Zhang Jingyi (張婧儀)!

Adapted from Chinese author Kennedy Xu’s Cang Hai Xi Lin, the story centers on Zanghai, son of the Imperial Astronomer who witnessed his entire family being killed. With plans for revenge, he learns construction and the art of war, returning to the capital after a decade to come under the tutelage of his enemy Duke Ping Jin. However, he realizes that he has only glimpsed a part of the conspiracy, and that more needs to be done to uphold justice. Helmed by Zheng Xiaolong (鄭曉龍) of Empresses in the Palace <後宮甄嬛傳> fame, filming has been shrouded in relative secrecy.

While the confirmed casting choice initially raised eyebrows, having Wallace Chung (鍾漢良) and Michelle Chen Yanxi (陳妍希) play 32-year-old Xiao Zhan’s parents in childhood is not such a far stretch, as his character was orphaned from young. Thus, the two will not have any scenes opposite Xiao Zhan.

Stills of the two characters has finally dropped in recent days to buzz! Wallace is seen gallantly riding a horse while smartly dressed in a coffee-colored ancient costume, earning praise from netizens for his well-kept looks despite being 50. Meanwhile, actress Michelle Chen, 40, who previously teamed as a couple with Xiao Zhan in a 2015 web production, looks elegant and refined in pink, exuding motherly vibes.

Surprised by their visuals, netizens are saying the three managed to pull off the most good-looking onscreen family, while complimenting the production team for their casting choices.

With all his dramas aired and The Legend of the Condor Heroes: The Great Hero <射鵰英雄傳：俠之大者> just completed, Xiao Zhan’s fans are anxious to see his next production, while the actor himself admittedly said his dramatic output is too low for “someone of his age”, and that he hopes to film more dramas in future to hone his acting skills.
