“My Roommate is a Gumiho” Sets Sweet Tone in Premiere
Starring Hyeri and Jang Ki Young, the opening of My Roommate is a Gumiho sets the tone for a fun-filled romance mixed with fantasy elements. Based on a webtoon, the opening episode introduces the circumstances that force a university student to live with a nine-tailed fox spirit known as a gumiho.
One night, Lee Dam (Hyeri) is seen struggling to take her drunk friend home after drinking in a restaurant. Things end horribly when Lee Dam’s friend accidentally vomits on an expensive parked car that belongs to Shin Woo Yeo (Jang Ki Young), a 900-year-old gumiho. While he does not ask for compensation for the mess, Lee Dam accidentally swallows a marble containing Shin Woo Yeo’s gumiho essence.
The next day, Lee Dam wakes up in Shin Woo Yeo’s house and is shocked when he reveals his true form as a gumiho. To recover the marble, Shin Woo Yeo suggests that they live together.
Although Lee Dam is in disbelief, she notices that strange occurrences are happening around her, and she feels uncomfortable around her male classmates. Shin Woo Yeo explains that she will feel uncomfortable when she is around men born under the sign of the tiger, which is gumiho’s natural predator.
Lee Dam has her first brush of trouble at a nightclub when a man (born under the tiger sign) tries to forcefully take her away. Fortunately, Shin Woo Yeo arrives to rescue Lee Dam and teaches the man a lesson.
After the incident, Shin Woo Yeo establishes a set of rules that Lee Dam must abide by: no socialization with men born under the tiger sign, as well as a ban on alcohol and fried chicken. In return, Lee Dam also makes her demands: Shin Woo Yeo must make every effort to extract the gumiho marble from her; he cannot glare at her; and he must quit smoking.
With a fast-paced episode, the comedic plot moves forward quickly as the two characters will adjust to each other’s lifestyles. As My Roommate is a Gumiho unfolds, viewers are in for a sweet ride seeing how their roommate arrangements will turn into an unlikely romance.
