Myolie Wu Aspires to Be Maggie Cheung

Like Maggie Cheung (張曼玉), Myolie Wu (胡杏兒) did not manage to win the top Miss Hong Kong crown but that did not stop her career from shining brightly. Myolie draws inspiration from Maggie, “I know it’s still a big distance away, but I admire that Maggie makes the way she lives her life. Aside from her serious attitude towards work, she knows how to enjoy life.”

Myolie started her acting career shortly after her Miss Hong Kong stint in 1999. Her versatility led her to be cast in a variety of roles, ranging from a weak girl, to a housewife, to a royal concubine, and also most notably, an overweight but happy-go-lucky girl in To Grow With Love <肥田囍事>. But Myolie said she will not go through the extreme weight gain for another role again. “Not again; I still can’t go back to my fittest stage of 100 odd pounds. I’m now older and my metabolism has slowed down. What if I can’t lose the weight I gain?”

Myolie has been juggling her time working in mainland China and Hong Kong. Since she has worked with the production staff at TVB for many years, it is hard to find new chemistry. Filming in mainland China offers new excitement and challenges. But her heart is still in Hong Kong, as she hopes to maintain her local popularity and be close to her family.

As a teenager, Myolie was sent to a boarding school in Northern Island. Without her family by her side in a foreign land, Myolie learnt to be independent. Last year, she bought two adjoining units, in which she lives next to her sister in Cheung Sha Wan. Myolie said, “Living nearby, we can look out for each other. I love my family, but I will not always be all over them. I just want to know that they are doing well.”

A Quiet Person

Myolie’s latest series, Triumph in the Skies 2 <衝上雲宵II>, has become a ratings magnet. While she played the loveable Zoe in the first installment, she portrays quiet aircraft technician, Summer, in the sequel. Although viewers prefer Zoe’s vibrancy, Myolie found it challenging to play the extremely positive and talkative character because her own personality is the exact opposite. Myolie said, “I love the role of Summer. She is a little like me, quiet. So I used a lot of eye expressions when playing her.”

Since breaking up with Bosco Wong (黃宗澤), Myolie has focused completely on her work. As usual, she is reluctant to discuss the breakup, but mentioned that their “values should be similar, otherwise it does not matter how handsome the man is”!

Myolie loves to work and does not see herself getting married to become a stay-at-home mother. Her childhood dream was to become a doctor, and if allowed the opportunity to choose again, she prefers to become a doctor instead of entering the entertainment industry.

What are Myolie’s plans for the future? “I will focus on earning money in the next few years. Afterward, I will move to a place where no one knows me, to study or become a convenience store clerk to experience life.”

  1. I thought which Maggie Cheung, ahhhh of course. Every actress seems to aspire to be her. to be honest, I never thought Maggie Cheung to be a good actress.

    1. Me neither. Prefer HKTV Maggie by a mile.

I think its more envy of Maggies global acknnowledgement more than of her acting skills.

    2. I have the same feeling towards Maggie Cheung’s (Cheung Man-Yuk) acting. She is very famous internationally, but I don’t particularly like her acting and her low voice.

  2. Myolie seems like such a workaholic that I can’t imagine her really moving away in a few years.

  3. Seeing that she didn’t pick someone who has a successful career AND love life, it doesn’t seem like finding a husband is high on her list. Still hurt? 🙁

  4. Sometimes I do wonder when is ENOUGH for most of them?
With the fortune she has now, she can basically go travel and enjoy her life. She doesn’t need to act in so many dramas that got herself so tired. Those endorsement fees is enough, plus all the $$$ in her savings.

    1. I think that it’s just that she still enjoys acting right now. I remember one of her interviews where she said that she only needs a few days for vacation and then she usually goes stir-crazy and want to go back to work again.

I’m just hmmm how much $$$ she want to earn that she finally thinks it is enough for her to go experience life?
I had a friend who worked two jobs. Day and night time. And he won twice lottery, first place! I’m not sure how much he gets but I always wonder why is he working so hard? If its me, I’ll definitely took leaves to travel. Too bad, he passed away, he was knocked down by a car on his way home after his night job.
I just hope Myolie doesn’t work till it jeopardize her health to realize that. Same goes to Tavia and Linda.
Especially Linda, with so many endorsements, she should really slow down to enjoy life
Just look at Charmaine, she is enjoying her life.

      2. Some people just love working. I have friends who say that they would keep working if they ever won the lottery. For me, I would quit my job and then bum around all day. haha

      3. Charmaine is a fewyears older than Myolie and tavia though, and some years older than linda. I think in a few years time, Myolie would also stop filming back to back like Charmaine,
Linda has always said she wants to go back to Canada.I think she will leave within 5 years
But those two seems pretty robust and healthy, Tavia is the one we always hear about getting sick or something. Idk why she doesn’t take some time to recuperate.

      4. Good for Linda and of course for Myolie as well!

        @Nicole
I’ve watched a video on u-tube, an interview with Tavia after her winning TVB BA, she is the bread winner of the family. Although she tried very polite in the interview but I feel that she had a not so happy childhood with her step dad, with her saying she vowed to take care of both her mother and elder sister, to stand up for them, those thoughts doesn’t just come to a little gal. Post the link later 😉

Thus I feel that’s the reason why she is working deadly hard to earn $$$ and being labelled by many that she kepts commenting about $$$. But if you see practical jokes, she just lend $$ to Roger without hesitation. She isn’t that money minded after all.

I believe even until now she not just taking care of her mum but still helps her sister out financially.
Do hope that she will love her body more too. With the amount of $$$ she has now, I feel it’s no harm to get a holiday! Honestly, I love Tavia but all the hard works really shows on her physically. She seems like she ages a lot, compared to Myolie.
I love watching Myolie as Summer! She is cool and pretty!

        HIGH 5!!!
Hahas! Me the same! I had my investment withdrawn few years back and I really took a YEAR vacation! It’s not much but it’s enough for me to pay up my fees and enjoy a little!! Took up a make-up course, something I’ve long to do and go for doggies adoption xD
        I miss those moments badly!!!!

      6. Yen, I thought Tavia has a good relationship with her stepfather? Wasn’t there an article recently where she spoke sadly about how her stepfather died before she can move her parents into a bigger home? It mayalso be the period before her mom married her stepfather that caused her to feel that way?…

But yes we get that she wants to help her family, but I think they all do, but her health seems very bad, ano she needs to realize it.

      7. @Yen,
Thanks for sharing the story about your friend and that story really reminds us all that life is fragile and precious and we all do not know when we can just go just like that. There are people who are well off or/and have lots of money but they still want to work because they are used to it and want to be more secure if you what I mean. I heard of these other people who just quit their jobs after winning the lottery and all they did was spend and sat around and did nothing until all of the money was gone. Then they had no job and were in big trouble. As you know, money comes and money goes so it is always important to keep your job/business or whatever you have to make yourself secure. I agree with you that we should not work so hard that it jeopardizes our health since nothing is more important than health. All of the money in the world cannot buy back your health.

If you watch the video, just look how both Griselda and Tavia mentioned about their step dad.
From the way she responded, I really don’t feel she felt loved or have a happy childhood living with their step dad, that she will constantly get scare of being scold or beaten?-thats only my wild guess :/ and to step up to protect both her mum and elder sister, those thought from a little gal to me is surely not a good one.

      1. Thanks for the link Yen but I can’t watch now due to the slow net connection. I also thought that Tavia had a good relationship with her stepfather too. Or was that other article all made up??It is sad that she did not have a good relationship with her stepfather since she hardly even got to know her real father.

    3. @Yen,
You know there is no limit to greed or the amount of money anyone can or wants to have. Also, the type of lifestyle we live is different from the life that artists live. They live the high life compared to just the average joe and jane. You never know when you can lose all of that money as well since money can come and go just like that. I don’t know if you have seen those American celebs who are way richer than Myolie but some now live in their car and are on welfare. You really don’t know when life can just take a down turn…

      1. Agreed!
Just like MJ, who would’ve guess that he is in a lot of debts and his “never land ” need to be sold.

  5. Oftentimes I hear about people’s aspiration to drop everything after they make enough to travel but few can let go of what they have. Sometimes it’s not about the money but the sense of security that comes with having money.

I wish I can drop everything and just travel as well but I think my best plan in life is to work and then use vacation days to travel. Vacation won’t have the same meaning if I’m just traveling for fun and not to de-stress.

Myolie – as much as I like you, I don’t think you have what it takes to follow Maggie Cheung Man Yuk’s footsteps. She’s not diversifying her acting resume enough and she’s spending a lot of time chasing the money by filming those mainland dramas. Maggie Cheung M.Y made a lot of sacrifices that I don’t think Myolie can, since her personality differs from Maggie. You honestly have to be like Fala Chen or Michelle Ye to do it. A true risk taker. Myolie is a play it safe girl. Nothing wrong with it but she’s not going to make it big if she sticks to TVB and Mainland dramas.

    Just my two cents ….

    1. Agree with you Pandamao. Myolie is sooo different from Maggie so I do not think she can be like Maggie… They are just too different.

    2. Same here. I also do not have the guts to drop everything and go do what I like. I must have the security net. I admire people who dare to do so.

  6. What is the big deal with Maggie? I don’t find her acting that great it’s just that she got to be in a few films with some of the classic actors. I’m just saying this based on her career not her personal life unless that’s worth looking up to.

    1. Her acting initially is bad, she got better with time. She was in lots of bad movies.
So the big deal has nothing to do with her acting, rather her career. Inspite of bad acting, she still got very famous- so that’s really something.

    2. Acting is subjective… I personally think Maggie’s acting is ok, but can be good in certain roles. She has charisma that a lot of actresses these days just do not have. I think that is what makes her special and unique.

      1. She’s also very mysterious. Her deep voice actually matches a lot of the roles Wong Ka Wai gave her …

      2. I’m not that enamoured with Maggie either, but I agree with what you said. She does exude a certain charm and maturity. I think she was fantastic in ‘Comrades, Almost a Love Story’ though.

  7. @Yen
Thank you for the link. I just watched it. I think Tavia does love her step-father in her own fashion. But what she didn’t like about her step-father was his rough behaviour. He was a roughneck, life with him was like constantly walking on eggshells.
It’s like when the cat is away the mice come out to play. So when she and her sister heard his voice or sound of his footstep they would revert back to their well-behaved selves.
Her step-father favored her over her sister. She mentioned one time when her step-father gave her sister a beating Tavia kind of pushed him away. Not that she had the intention to beat him. Just a reflex action to protect her sister. She said something about bleeding lip ( not sure whose) though her sister had no recollection of the incident.
Tavia said it had pained her whenever she saw her sister get beating from step-father. I think this incident stays in her memory because she dared to push him.
