Myolie Wu Adopts Flexible Attitude Towards Happiness

Myolie Wu (胡杏兒) has portrayed numerous warm and outgoing characters onscreen, but her real self is closer to an introvert who is afraid of unfamiliarity. As a celebrity always put in the limelight, Myolie chose to approach everything in a cautious manner in order to protect the acting career she loves. This may have led to others’ beliefs that she is an overly serious person, where in fact she just prefers to play it safe.

Different from many of her roles in dramas, Myolie admitted she is not the most sociable person off-screen. Regarding the reserved side of her personality, she expressed, “I don’t really know how to communicate with strangers. If it feels awkward, it’s really hard to continue the conversation. If you ask me what I am really like, I don’t even know sometimes.”

In the past, Myolie was extremely careful to evade negative tabloid reports and gossip from netizens. She spilled, “No matter how tired I was at the time, I was afraid of not smiling. I was afraid people would misunderstand me as being unfriendly.” Grasping a sense of how the media liked to amplify small matters to make headlines, Myolie built a protective barrier around herself to avoid unnecessary tidbits.

Living her star life with a cautious barrier made it easier for people to misunderstand when Myolie did occasionally toss out a joke. Earlier, she uploaded a photograph on Weibo of herself hugging a mysterious man and wrote in the post, “I’ve found [him]!” Netizens immediately believed Myolie found new love, until it was later exposed everything was only a prank and the man was actually TVB’s renowned prankster, Johnson Lee (李思捷). Many netizens did not find the joke to be funny and were upset by the deception involved.

“Maybe I give others the impression of being too serious. Otherwise, people wouldn’t have had such a big reaction,” Myolie said, “I only wanted to crack a joke at the time.” Some netizens claimed Myolie was trying to show off a new love to her ex-boyfriend, Bosco Wong (黃宗澤). Speaking of this, she laughed and expressed, “I really never even thought of that. Why would I release such a photo based on my cautious personality? But recently, I’ve suddenly opened up to the realization that I don’t need to report my life to others. I also don’t need to live up to others’ expectations. I’m learning to live my life.”

Having been in the industry for more than a decade, Myolie believes it is time to look back on what she has accomplished and plan for the future. She looks forward to new challenges to expand her vision. In TVB’s new drama, Walking With You <陪着你走>, Myolie portrays a blind character for the first time. She spent time taking special training classes to prepare for the detailed performance.

In terms of her personal life, Myolie is currently not anxious to start a family. She believes happiness is the most important thing between a couple, rather than any set promises. Myolie added, “Happiness requires adjusting your attitude. It doesn’t matter if it’s love-related or not. If you are too stubborn in chasing after a certain goal and think that reaching it is happiness, you might realize afterwards that you have sacrificed even more.”

  1. Myolie should just relax more and think less of self and how others think of her. She should perhaps just be herself, be natural in her behavior, for example, not force herself to smile just because she is afraid people may think her unfriendly.

    1. I notice she’s someone that isn’t natural off screen with the paparazzis too.

she’s too cautious of her every move ..those people will never find true happiness.

    So true.

Glad she is adopting a new attitude. Better late than never. I use to think she was the happy and playful type until all these reports of a scarred childhood came along. Sometimes I wonder how she got along w/ Bosco all these years. Wouldn’t he have been more compatible with someone who was less cautious being the sunshine he is? She doesn’t need to be exactly like him, but something more easygoing is what I suspected. Perhaps aside from Bosco’s flirty and playful side, Myolie was also an uptight and stubborn person.
