Nancy Wu and Oscar Leung Share a Close Friendship

While filming War of In-Laws <我的野蠻奶奶> in 2005, there were rumors circulating that Oscar Leung (梁烈唯) was dating costar Nancy Wu (胡定欣) after both were spotted shopping for condoms at a convenience store. In reality, both are good friends, and Oscar’s girlfriend Tina is also Nancy’s secondary school junior.

However, Nancy’s impression of Oscar on the set of War of In-Laws was not entirely favorable. She was shocked when she realized her former secondary schoolmate was dating Oscar. Oscar admitted that he also had had a hard time convincing Tina’s mother of his sincerity. Now that she fully knows and understands Oscar, Nancy, like his other good friends such as Michael Miu (苗僑偉), only hopes for Oscar to settle down with Tina soon.

Nancy Encourages Oscar

Nominated for Most Improved and Best Supporting awards for the first time at the TVB Anniversary Awards ceremony in 2008, Oscar was not disappointed when he did not win. He felt encouraged when Nancy told him, “The time will come.” Having a rocky start in his acting career since he joined TVB in 2000, Oscar understood he had to work hard and continue to strive on. In 2012, he was finally recognized for his work when he won his first award.

Oscar related, “I was not good back then and I remember the company had to write memos to the producers to persuade them to cast me in their series. Once, I was asked by a producer to go into the van to get my costume. When I got on the van, the artists were surprised to see me and asked why I was there since I was not in the series. I told them I was playing the [cameo] role of a debtor. So one of them said to me, ‘At the back of the van there’s a shirt with debtor written on it. It’s for special contract actors so it must be yours then.’ At that moment, I felt like screaming because those words really hurt me.”

With his acting career coming to a standstill in 2006, Oscar finally decided to try a different career path. To make ends meet, Oscar joined a friend and worked as a DJ at a club. However, nine months later, Oscar could not withstand the long night working hours and seeing how much he loves acting, decided to give it another try. As luck would have it, he was asked to play the part of a juvenile delinquent in Your Class or Mine <尖子攻略> which earned him a nomination at the TVB awards.

Nancy agreed that the road in acting is long and challenging. The first step is to learn to be patient and wait for opportunities. Fortunately for Nancy, she was cast in Triumph in the Skies <衝上雲霄> shortly after she graduated from TVB Acting Class in 2002.

No Money to give Red Packets

In his worst days, Oscar could only afford to buy food and pay for his gym membership every month, without money left for anything else. Whenever he got his salary for the month, the first two things he would do is to stock up on groceries as well as pay for his monthly gym membership. In order to be cast in meatier roles, he understood the need to build up his physique. He could enjoy free showers as well as magazines at the gym.

Oscar’s financial situation was so bad that he never took part in social gatherings with his colleagues. Even when Power Chan (陳國邦) and Mimi Lo (羅敏莊) invited him to their wedding, he had to reject them on the pretext of work because he had no money for the lucky packet. When Oscar attended Myolie Wu’s (胡杏兒) celebration after her mini concert, he did not order any food for fear of being asked to foot the bill. Without much money left to spend, Oscar also resorted to wearing hand-me-down suits from Chilam Cheung (張智霖) to wear at events.

Although the most trying times may have passed, Oscar likes to look upon them as important life lessons which serve as a reminder for him to continue to work hard.

  1. Humble roots, realistic goals and life of hard knocks got Oscar to where he is at today. He can savor and cherish the current successes after experiencing the lows before. He is a realist like Kenneth Ma.

    1. Agreed but Kenneth Ma is just simply over-rated.

      1. and what do you mean by over-rated? stop being jealous that kenneth is a great and humble man. he proved it in office of practical joke episode 4 where he willingly help a friend with such a huge amount without question! he also puts his family over money by his unwillingness to move his career to mainland!

      2. that’s a bad picture of oscar and nancy. they look older here 🙁

      3. Why would I be jealous of Kenneth? It’s not like he’s one of a kind man out there. It’s just a typical guy. Nothing truly special about him.

        Over-rated: over-the-top praises.

      4. And actually a better meaning of over-rated: obsessed.

      5. Who isn’t overrated these days?? Many artists are so it is not just Kenneth if you think he is. I feel back in the days, many were more talented and had more of a passion for acting. But these days, it is just too monetary oriented and people are becoming more and more shallow and only care for looks so it doesn’t feel like you really need true talent to succed anymore.

  2. Love both of them!! Hope to see them collaborate again! Wow, didn’t know Oscar’s gf was Nancy’s former schoolmate. Haha!

  3. Wow tvb, you should be ashamed of yourself paying out peanuts.

    1. Yes. No wonder most would leave after they are well known. TVB should look after the welfare of their artistes. At least provide lodging with subsidised meals and gym for their artistes (especially for those just starting out). It isn’t too much to ask for – if you’re paying peanuts, at least make sure their basic necessities are taken care of.

      1. TVB is good just for starting your career but of course you would leave after you get the fame and recognition that you need. Also, even if they did treat you well, who would want to work and stay with them for their entire career?? Some do because they can’t find work elsewhere, but if you become successful, who wants to stay with TVB???

TVB should be ashamed of themselves but they aren’t since they don’t care as long as they get cheap labor.I guess they are just thick skinned and do not care what anyone thinks of them as long as they get money. How shameful!!

  4. I remember reading articles about him being really arrogant when he first started out in the industry but have since changed his ways as he started to understand the trials and challenges of being an actor. Oscar is truly an inspiration for those who are struggling with their own hopes and dreams.

Patience, hard work and perseverance. Oscar’s success is not by luck and will only continue to grow. All the best! 😀

    1. It is good that he changed for the better. He, Wayne and many other artists are good role models for people who are struggling. Hope they keep it up and keep on inspiring others.

  5. Imagine all the stars who hasn’t made it big. I feel bad for them. Getting paid pennies still. We always know about who has made it, but so many will never even get an ounce of recognition.

  6. Look at all the famous friends in this article… The guy is a genius in building relationships. There is no way this guy will fail.

Hope he stops talking about having no money because its getting old.

  7. Love Nancy and Oscar! Hope both of them will get better roles and TVB will start to notice their talents
