Raymond Lam and Tavia Yeung Counter Criticisms of “Three Kingdoms RPG”
Despite averaging 30 ratings points in its premiere broadcast, Three Kingdoms RPG <回到三國> has been criticized by viewers as being a low-budget production. The props and rudimentary computer graphics were ridiculed. The fiercest criticism was directed at Kenneth Ma (馬國明) for his exaggerated acting in portraying a time traveler to the Three Kingdoms era. Viewers also complained that Raymond Lam’s (林峯) slow reactions in the drama made Zhuge Liang appear dumb!
Raymond Lam Defends “Three Kingdoms RPG”
Yesterday, Raymond Lam, Kenneth Ma, Tavia Yeung, Sharon Chan (陳敏之) and Kaki Leung (梁嘉琪) appeared at a promotional event. Portraying brilliant military strategist, Zhuge Liang, in Three Kingdoms RPG, Raymond’s genteel manner was a stark contrast to Kenneth’s outlandish and street-smart ways. Appearing with a full beard throughout the drama, Raymond was careful not to laugh too loudly during filming, “I laughed like Santa Claus in the series because I was afraid that my beard would fall off!”
Regarding complaints that Kenneth was too old to portray a video gamer, Raymond replied, “A television drama is an entertainment medium; it is more important that everyone enjoys watching it. Kenneth Ma’s personality tends to be quiet, so his performance this time is a major breakthrough! I portray a historical figure, while Kenneth plays a modern character. Of course, the manner in which we speak will be different!”
Tavia Yeung Supports Kenneth Ma
Tavia Yeung also did not feel that Kenneth Ma was too old to portray the role of “Sima Shun” in Three Kingdoms RPG. Tavia said, “I do not think that he is too old. His performance is very good. There is not distinguishing as to how old a diamond bachelor is; he can be 50 years old!”
Tavia denied that the production was shoddy in quality, but the drama did not warrant staging large military battles as it was a comedy foremost. Tavia felt that it was more important to deliver a humorous and refreshing feeling to the audience, by contrasting the differences between ancient and modern perspectives.
Addressing criticisms against his exaggerated acting, Kenneth said, “Yes, the character is very ‘high’ and cannot be too quiet!”
Despite the criticism that the low-quality production did not do justice to a drama revolving around the Three Kingdoms era, the drama has captured the attention of viewers and was hotly discussed in online forums. With Raymond Lam focusing more on his music and film career, he is currently filming only one TVB drama per year. As his TVB drama output decreases, fans will likely cherish his television performances more and continue to watch ensuing episodes of Three Kingdoms RPG.

Jayne: Shoddy production details or not, the casting of Raymond, Kenneth, and Tavia have a huge fan base that should draw in strong ratings. The production quality is still TVB standard, in which battle scenes feel as if they filmed in the backyard.
Just enjoy for what it is. So far it’s pretty funny, and I find myself actually laughing out loud. Never thought I’d say this…Kenneth is hilarious!

CKL is ancient Professor King
These are my summaries of actors’ characteristic in potraying CKL namely:-
Takeshi Kaneshiro(movie)= handsome, cool ,fast pace ,idealist
Lu Yi(china production) = mandom , cool ,slower pace, smart and idealist
LF (TVB production) = handsome, cool ,naive -slow pace (early part of series), ,smarter and faster pace-brighter (later part of series) after influenced & partially assisted by sima yuen ‘s future gadget) , chok and idealist
LF as CKL is ANYTHING but naive. he is just not exposed to modern technologies and facts. And without all these he can still figure out certain things. That is not naive. Sima Shun is naive. Give the same knowledge and technology to CKL and he can conquer the world.
And he is no slow paced. LF is because to show a more educated learned man, he has to move at a slower pace.
Lu Yi is handsome! I like both but Lu Yi is more handsome than Takeshi Kaneshiro in my opinion :). Or I like Lu Yi’s look more. But both handsome :D.
And right, LF’s CKL is anything but naive. Sima Shun is naive. No part he is assisted by Sima Shun’s Xperia up to now. All from his head.

But according to historical facts , other than a great war strategist, CKL is also a great inventor – mantao(bun),automatic cross bow, stone sentinel maze (modern water damn) and hung ming lantern.

I do not understand the continuous criticisms of Kenneth being too old to play a video gamer. I don’t think there’s a specific set age for video gamers although generally, they’re played by teenagers most. Plus, Kenneth is aging very well and does not look close to his 40’s, early 30’s, yes.
I prefer Kenneth’s “exaggerated” acting over Raymond’s mellow tone. The pop culture references, of course, makes Kenneth’s character more fun to watch, but Raymond makes Zhuge Liang quite boring and sleep-inducing. I’m usually up for “strategic” plots, but he doesn’t make it interesting/exciting at all. Takeshi Kaneshiro did a much more witty job in Red Cliff.
I wonder how important Tavia’s role will be. So far, she has only appeared in 2 episodes, with very limited scene. So far she’s more likable than in the last few professional roles she played (TOT and THC). For some reason, professional roles makes her a little cocky, maybe it’s the nose haha?
I don’t have much complaints on this series and it’s one of more “exciting” dramas in a while with all the debates, discussion, and front-line actors. It’s a nice, enjoyable comedy for the most part, but very laugh-worthy if you treat it as a serious historical epic. The only noticeable complaint I would have for now is Savio and Jimmy who plays Lee Kwok Lun’s “brothers”… they are so loud in reciting their lines, but it’s how they are.
Btw, who is Mary Hon’s character in history? And why does Lee Kwok Lun’s army have to submit to her?
Some netizens are too picky! 3 Kingdom is fantastic so far. It’s very funny and entertaining.
It’s unfair to compare this with Step into the Past which has more serious theme and bigger budget.
Now, I know why Kenneth exaggerated his acting. Despite that, I really like this serie. I had good laugh during Kenneth’s scenes.
In my opinion, Raymond did a good job in this serie and I really like his voice. He is a right candidate to portray Zhuge Liang.
Jonathan Cheung also did a good job for his role (Fan Gun) too.
ma ming and fan Gen are very funny. Their parts steal the scene and they have great chemistry!
imo Raymond’s zhuge liang is average. Many times he still remind me of Raymond himself and at other times his movements seem a bit deliberate.
it is not easy to act as CKL because he needs to show his emotions through his calm actions and expressions and atm, i think ray is doing a pretty good job while kenneth’s role is easier to act as all he needs to do is exaggerate and exaggerate (which is okay since he is supposed to be the funny one)

I understand where people are coming from this, as the Three Kingdoms Era are one of the most profilic history of China, so of course people would be expecting better visual effects and all. But this is a comedy and I don’t think people should be too serious with their criticisms.
I do not agree about Kenneth being too old. He gave me the impression that he was trying to potray a 30-something-year-old character, not a “youth” as reviews say. Misunderstanding of context, maybe?
Perhaps I’m biased as I am a huge Raymond Lam fan so I won’t stop watching this series, I enjoy it actually!

Huang Yue Ying only gave birth to Zhuge Liang’s sons after 20 years into their marriage. Unless the 60 years later plot is true, I doubt the series will show this.

I can’t take Gan as Shun’s manservant however docile he acts in front of Shun. He’s the one who sheltered Shun, and gave him clothes, food, and money when Shun first went back to 3 Kingdom era. I can’t see someone like this as manservant. I can only see them as friends, brothers or buddies.

Yup ppl in Gong was a lot younger but in says of gong series in general :). There are a lot of gong series in China now. And of course there are older actresses. In general, the makeup of China series are a lot better than Txb’s.

I didn’t actually watch Gong since I thought the show sounded stupid, but I know Yang Mi is the lead and she is much younger. In general, it seems to me like they get to lead much younger in Mainland, like Yang Mi for Gong, Liu Shi Shi for BBJX while all the current fa dans in TVB are nearing the 30 year old mark. So it’s not really a fair comparison, since older women’s skin will not be as good. As for better makeup, perhaps, they do apply much lighter in Mainland, but since their skin is in much better condition – they do not need much makeup to begin with. OTOH, I think LSS was very stressed during the filming of BBJX because her skin definitely broke out and it was very obvious in HD. So I would not say that’s better makeup.
How about older women like Hu Ying or Gao Yuen Yuen? Or Gao Yuen Yuen was born in 1975 and she looks a lot younger in series with bright makeup.
The skin of Sheren Tang, for example, in new Pearl princess is firmer than in Rosy business 3, it’s the reference.

Is Raymond’s contract with TVB ending soon? Somehow, I feel he will leave TVB to focus his career only in films and music. And, the last thing that will complete his “journey’ at TVB is the award, TV King. Or, he might switch to a per-series contract for a few years. But, he’s already filming one series a year. I don’t know how long it’ll last.

He signed a new contract with Txb last year, so he’ll stay with Txb until 2017. All the time he signed 5 years. But his new contract is really 1 series per year + right of choosing series. Last in next 5 years.
I think it’s much better that he now has the right to choose, but with TVB’s limited creative juices, no wonder that he hasn’t been filming much and focuses on other things.
That means he choose HAL right? HAL looks like a good series that an actor will choose.

To correct, I think she was pretty until HOG before her new face. Second, she can act in tragedy, not perfect acting like you claimed but tolerable. Third she has facial expessions, not woody type. But overall her acting is typical herself in years and no improvement. I admit I had expectations on her but she dun meet it. So I dont see her stepping out of safe zone or something that can make me impressed or at least can say: oh she has some improvements.

All the artists are for the purpose of entertain us, a-pop. I see it as their job and duty. They dun do these things for charity.
It’s a direct pay in some cases like this: we buy the album, a part of the amount is sent to the artist for each album sold. Indirect is like that: we watch the series or buy dvd, company pays them.

Maybe I’m the rarely one that appreciate and sympathy all the artist and production crew that have sacrifice their sleeping, resting time .effort ,health in order to produce a entertainment product. Every one of them deserve credit even though their performance and outcome very bad. If I not fond in particular music ,artist or show ,I rather just skip it rather telling how bad they are.
Criticism are good . can let someone know there have room of improvement but the dosage must suitable in order make everyone comfortable with the critic.

A-pop: who dun work hard? Ppl who are doing other jobs also work hard. Some are even harder. TY isnt the most hardworking in the world or even Txb. So I dun see why must treat her special. Of course, if she is sick or something, wish her can recover. I dun want any bad to come to her or wish her bad. But that dun change the fact that I think their job is to entertain us, not that we have to think of them as god/goddess or untouchable ppl.

For the makeup matter, according to Kaki Leung, the artist uses their own makeup artists to makeup for them in Txb series and function or else. Txb has makeup artists but dun use if there is private makeup artist of this person. One makeup artist can work with a lot of artists but will have a big star as main client.
Hence, the makeup on series is the choice of artists themselves. For example, Kaki dun use fake eyelids for her role in 3k because her role is a sick women. Enhancing for this point by the comment of Kate Tsui last time, she said when she acted Monkey in A great way to care, she is a cop so cant use too much makeup. Tat’s why she used nude makeup. Ella Koon shares the same opinion.
So in fact, the makeup is deemed to be the decision of the artists and not Txb’s. They’ll choose the way of makeup that they think to be suitable to their role and costumes.

Nope, I correct myself for the makeup issue, too. And it’s said by me that not only TY but Txb overall has bad makeup in recent ancient series and there is reason for this – depends on each person who choose the makeup for themselves, then some has good money to invest, some not. And also the habits, some like thick, some like light makeup.

Hey, not only the anti fans react this way. The fans can bash/hate/can’t accept the ppl who don’t like/hate their faves and it is a fair game to both sides.
I don’t hate ppl that I don’t know or without a reason :). But overall, love or hate is a part of the human’s emotions and can’t control it. BTW, I think that being strange in the limitation is ok. You are yourself. Just dun break the limitation :).
For example: In Korea there were anti-fans who put gel on the bottle of an artist or in Japan there were anti-fans who threw stone to head of an artist. These actions got over the top.

Why is it only with TY that we all look pissed off? I do recall there were some huge debates on Raymond as well, or Kenneth or everyone else. How come only TY is untouchable? I am sure she has fans here but there are fans who also recognises the fact that sometimes their idol is 100% up to par. We are not criticising her acting abilities, just the fact that she uses too much makeup. It is not wrong to say that.
