Raymond Lam Defends “Eating Soft Ice Cream”

Raymond Lam (林峯), Sherman Chung (鍾舒漫), and Vincy Chan (泳兒) appeared at a promotional event. To fit his tough cop role in new TVB drama, Fight Crime <雷霆掃毒>, Raymond appeared with an unshaven look. Entering his thirties, Raymond joked that he had to try different roles.

Music producer Ben/ Deal Chong (莊冬昕), who had created Raymond’s Jade Solid Gold “Golden Melody” song, Chok, was widely bashed for his new song, Eating Soft Ice Cream <食軟雪糕>. Netizens complained that Deal’s new song sounded terrible. Raymond indicated that there were no boundaries in music and there were different styles to music. Raymond praised Eating Soft Ice Cream for being cute and that the music composition was quite good.

Asked whether he will aim for the JSG Golden Melody Award again next year, Raymond replied, “Each year, I will challenge myself, rather than the awards.”

Excerpt: Oriental Sunday

Jayne: There are many similarities between Chok and Eating Soft Ice Cream. If you like Chok, you’ll probably like Eating Soft Ice Cream. The song reminds me of what MC Jin would sing. I don’t find Eating Soft Ice Cream to be as terrible as people claim. It has a decent Hip Hop beat to it; the lyrics made me laugh as well. Reminds me of the many times I can’t wait to get off work to get some green tea soft ice cream (the best flavor) after a long stressful day!

  1. Ugh.. the song is too sweet for my taste. And that’s saying quite a lot considering I listen to the likes of SNSD and T’ARA.

  2. So what exactly is this song about? My mom said she doesn’t like this Ben guy cause he doesn’t make good songs. She said that his songs are only famous or heard cause Ray sang them. I liked the song Chok and Ray’s other fast songs by Ben, but I think Raymond should stop using him and try soemone new cause Ben really isn’t that great.

    1. Ray used to have Tang Chi Wai right all his love songs and such, and he writes many good TVB theme songs better ever since collaborating with Ben Chong they aren’t as good. I personally dint mind Rays new fast songs, but they are not my fav…he suits the romantic love sings better… That should be his focus not dance songs.

      1. Then ppl will say he does not improve. Stick with only one image will kill the artist since audience cannot eat one type of food days after day. So as a listener, I still want him to renew himself after every album. It’s for my benefits too, since listening to his songs became my habits already. I dont want sometimes in the future to yawn at his songs and say: Aw, same old style!

It would be better if he learn some new dance move.

      2. Say love song = monotone, no improvement etc.

Say dance song = please tweens, stupid song etc.

Hard to please the whole world.

Ben did very well with Illusion, Hello, Tonight, Broken etc. for LF and Deal for himself. Don’t think Ben can’t compose. Compare Soft icecream to I’m sexy and I knpw it which I have to listen everywhere now, Soft icecream has more meaning. But the Sexy song is damn popular and no complaints. Then to say that Asians are difficult to the new stuffs

  3. Uh, is there a point to this song? I love ice cream as much as anyone but at least have a story to tell. Like does he prefer soft serve over real ice cream b/c of all the wicked calories? Is there a sad lactose-intolerant induced incident behind the choice?

Anyway, I’m guessing that he really wanted to write a song about “eating soft rice” but it was too risky.

    1. I think Fama would have done a better job writing and rapping a song about Soft Ice Cream.

      1. “Soft hard” back in the day, would’ve made it more humorous.

      2. I think Ben’s voice fit this song more. Maybe leave it to Fama and result is even worse.

      3. Fama or even MC Jin wont save this song to its glory of bad reviews!

      4. If this song is really sung by either of them, have any chance Larry3 will let it go :P?

      5. If this song is sung by McJin or FAMA, will Larry3 let the song go? Or to say that this song is sung by Eason Chan, what will Larry3 will comment? Really curious.

Assume: Oh he is a veteran singer then blah blah blah good?

  4. By the way, this Vid is sure making me hungry for ice cream especially. Yummy.

    1. I think he should’ve spiced up the MV a bit. Like ask LF to be the ice cream man. Now that would be truly yummy!

  5. Many people bashed the chok song too, so not surprised that this similar song is bashed as well. And probably will be bashed more, as not someone as popular as Raymond is singing it.

    1. Lol is good for heath and having heath meabs everything. Then Ben contributed a lol. Lol

  6. is there a subliminal message to this song or is it solely about eating soft ice cream?

  7. Geez….I’m slowly losing all respect for Raymond Lam between all his tv series and song choices.

On completely objective analyis of the song, its not terrible (I’ve, sadly, heard worse songs) but just not appropriate for LF image. His career trajectory was more Louis Koo/Andy Lau. Instead of becoming more mature his handlers seem to be trying to satify tweens and their moms and foregoing any chance of respect.

    1. But ray didn’t sing the song so will u refund him some of that respect? 😀

And I think Louis and Andy wouldn’t mind having tween fans and their moms if they still could.

    2. Someone again dun read before comment. Maybe just see the title lol

      1. What part in the lyric of Chok is meaningless? The lyricist for Chok is Chen Siu Kei who is a famous kyricst and Chok’s lyric is meaningful. It even has a hidden criticism.

  8. Who is this Ben/ Deal Chong (莊冬昕)?
I think you can call yourself a music producer but that does not mean you can produce good music. Although I love ice cream, this is one stupid song. FAMA could have sing or rap the song way better.

    1. I think he’s the guy gillian chung and stephanie Cheng were rumored to be fighting over.

      1. Yeah, I remembered there was an article about that. Thanks!

    2. Music composer and just become singer last year under Neway. He can compose but voice is ok. Ah he is old bf of Stephanie cheng

  9. Listening to the song a second time. On the first listening, I find the song bad. But, on second listening, it’s actually not that bad. Quite cute.

    1. Listen for the 3rd time and you will rush to buy the album. I tell you! Hypnosis! Probably!!

I was like eating soft ice cream? Is that a new term for eating soft rice except ice cream is older men being taken care off by younger women?!!?!

      1. I was thinking the same thing Funn… Hey, you can be right… Women can take care of men too. It doesn’t always have to be men taking care of women.

  10. ohh.. it’s DEAL”s new song – if it was RAY”S song than that would be so stupid. i could care less of deal or whoever he is… the song is probably for publicity stunt.

  11. The song is really making me crave some of that Japanese mochi ice cream. I have not eaten that in such a long time…

  12. What a rubbish song probably worst than “Chok” perhaps it will win the golden award 2012, LOL

People on the street can make a better song than this for sure. This city is dying…..

    1. I need to hear it first. I wonder is this an ode to his favourite that is soft ice cream?

    2. You make Ben become too important LOL His songs can kill the city 🙂 This should be look at as a praise LOL

      1. The song can kill the city if its played on TVB/ATV channels, radio, malls, restaurants….. yes it is hypnosis song which may turn into ice cream commercial.
So, move over Joey Yung’s bloated “Broadway” electronic/camera store award winning commercial.

      2. Good, then the song won’t kill the city but kill Larry3 only :P. Maybe ppl will keep it in mind and like it, like the current hits of Kpop group, example SNSD.

      3. It really can kill me, to see Hong Kong Music industry is produce this crap to the audience.

If the songs makes money; bravo.

      4. Many more craps or crappier all around the world are producing everyday. And we call it showbiz. Nobody will die except Larry3 the sensitive. Sorry to say, die because of this is a nonsense death.

      5. Enjoying. If can, you can continue and I’ll be here with you. My house is full of Kpop music now so I also have to do something nonsense to let go that type of music.

  13. The HK music industry is dying for years already….

In my view, there are two groups of singers. In the first group, there are singers who can really sing (e.g. Eason) and the album sales are good. However, nowdays, not many singers can sale a lot of abums/ep.

The second group are idol singers (e.g. Raymond Lam). There is a market for this type of singers. He may not sing as well as veteran respected singers in HK, but he sells a lot of albums and that is what you need. If nobody buys your album, then your music career is over in no time. And he has the advantage that he is developing in different areas (film and tv). That helps a lot in selling albums. And it helps that he looks good.

Look also at the Korean Music industry. Nowadays, only idol girl groups and boy groups are in the spotlight. In my view, most of the members of these groups are just average in singing (some can really sing, but there are not a lot), but they excell well in other areas (e.g. dance or have the looks). Their album sales are booming.

    1. LF is indeed in the right track. Just some wrong choice in song selection for competing JSG. His latest album ‘LF’ is indeed impressive and addictive upon hearing. Overall, he had achieved ten platinum in his release of cantopop album(2 platinum)and madopop album(4 platinum)release and LUML concert dvd( 4 platinum) in 2011 alone. I do believe he did better than eason in overall album sales in HK and macau region.

The album sales does not include the sales in south east asia and great china . His previous canto album release in 2009 Let’s Get Wet achieved 1.6 millions in sales world wide.

He will be a favourite contender for IFPI best male singer where album sales are taking into account.

    2. And having a lot of ppl who cant stand Eason’s music. My Chinese frd is one. She thinks Eason is too weird and have bad voice to her taste. That dun make Eason becomes a bad singer but means he isn’t accepted by everyone.

    3. you ever heard RaYMOND lAM live or you ever take a song of him? If yet,I sure that you wouldn’t said that.
I agree that he is an idol singer but beside he cansing and dance very well too!
are u a fan of Eason or you just hate LF

  14. Raymond should go back to singing romance ballad. That’s what he does best since his TVB themesongs days.

    1. But a lot of his fans are bored with his sad love songs and ask for fast songs. It’s just hard to please the world!

      1. I want him to have a mixture of love songs and fast songs. 🙂

    2. I agree and those were the types of songs from him that I actually enjoyed… He should stick to those. I think it is ok for him to sing fast songs and other types but don’t try to be so creative that it gets ridiculous…

  15. Makes me crave icecream. But meh, any publicity is good publicity for some.

    1. No, not like this case…. lots of dislikes in the video(s).

      1. He can ask Justin Beirber for the experience of having a lot of dislikes on youtube but still can step to stardom 😛

      2. Who is Justin Beirber? You mean Bieber… that guy who got hit by a water bottle on staged? or the guy who suck at pushing the revolving door?

      3. Yeah Bieber. Sorry for the miss spelling.

He is this and that but he is still very famous. End of the story? Maybe.

For hitting by something from anti-fans on stage, wanna read some crazier stories from Kpop fans?

      4. He is famous, and he has an audience. I really dont care, especially his crap songs.

        F.U. Usher!

      5. You dun need to care. He already has many other girls care for him, including Selena Gomez, lol. Losing just you (and me) isn’t a big deal to him.

      6. I said, you don’t need to care and nobody care that you are care or not. Same here, I care or not, nothing wrong. The fact is still there: The song of Bieber has a lot of dislikes and it turns to be good publicity to him. Case solved. You care/not care, nobody care.

      7. Good to know that Larry 3’s understanding system is working very weird. As mentioned below, lesson is taken: Larry3 is unable to read the full sentence and understand it properly. Case solved.

  16. News Flash: TVB already award this song as JSG Gold Song Award for 2012! 🙂

      1. Maybe you should listen to the popularpopular song I’m sexy and I know it

      2. lol! If anything the remix shows how similar to two songs are.

      3. Finally can click at the remix and the one who did the remix was super lazy. Even dun cut the talk before Ice-cream. So I don’t put it high.

      1. Exoidus,
I can’t believe I clicked on your recommended link. Truly terrible…someone had too much time on their hands with the remix and write their own links.

There are many parodies of Ben Chong’s “Eating Soft Ice Cream.” I guess the song is very inspiring to those who feel they can make better music.

      2. hehehe, sorry Jayne. Perhaps I shouldn’t put it here. Just thought it was funny, LOL

      3. Oh my gosh, that was terrible but sort of funny as well..

  17. I admire fung positive attitute towards the criticism, he is such a great singer, and he looks good with the beard.

      1. What positive attitude when TVB artists cried on screen all the time these days? LOL. You make it like he cried like a baby but in fact just a teary eyes that only can be seen in HD clips. Oh I know it! You have a hidden camera in his house to know he cried! But it isn’t to public :P.

      2. You make it like that. He didn’t. So don’t try too hard to twist my word and change the fact.

      3. I posted on your behalf and based on your word. So you have nothing else to say then have to twist my word? Accept other parts?

      4. Again, You said it…”he cried like a baby”

        I agree. 😀

      5. Ok, lesson is taken: Larry3 is unable to read the full sentence and understand it properly. Understanding from this convo and above convo which will be mentioned later.

You can’t never disagree with something come from your mind.

      6. That’s so funny. I agree that…”he cried like a baby”.

Raymond Lam, what an awesome guy to criticized with!

      7. You can’t never disagree with something come from your mind. LOL~.

BTW, you are really a great person to waste time with!

      8. You defend the guy and I dont give a hoot.

        ”he cried like a baby”

        lol.

      9. I’m giving you a hoot, too :P.

But I doubt you understand :(.

      10. I guess the incident about him crying in regards to the leakage of the PSS incident will forever haunt him…

  18. Ha! Ha! Finally heard the song! I thought it was Ray’s song until I re read the article, it is from the same producer but not Ray’s song. Maybe it is a spoof song? No comment except well… it is probably just a spoof song.

  19. I can’t wait to see Raymond romancing Kate in their next drama after “the four” (still at the top spot of my fav TVB dramas). I am sure he’s even anticipating it. Indeed I notice Raymond filled the lack of his onscreen pairing with pretty Kate -Gosh she was hot in 14 blades and had chemistry with Donny in their brief scenes- with their dance moves during his concerts… >:)

  20. The song is weird. Glad Raymond is working with other music producers such as Alvin in his next album. 🙂

  21. The four kings will be retired soon, they are in the late 40s, early 50s, what choice do they have?

Hong Kong needs new kings and what candidates does Hong Kong have? Eason Chan? (ops…he is old too) and who else? Not many talented singers have that level but will there be?

Back to golden time, people over Asia loved to hear Hong Kong artists’ song. Now, Korean Artists are dominating the music market. People over Asia, include Mainland, are willing to die to hear them. Japanese market for example, a great market, loves Korean artists.

    1. chok king is the answer. Jonathan wong and ron ng have the potential too

  22. I really like Deal’s song with Stephanie Cheng and MC Jin! And some of his songs actually sound pretty nice, but I don’t know what the heck happened to him when he wrote “Chok.”
