Raymond Lam Filming “The Colorful World of Sister Fa”

Raymond Lam Fung is currently filming TVB series, The Colorful World of Sister Fa <花花世界花家姐>, with Charmaine Sheh Si Man. When he heard of a Hong Kong tour bus being held hostage in Manila , he was shocked.

Ten years ago, Raymond traveled to the Philippines for a vacation. He also has relatives residing there. He did not think that the Philippines is unsafe, but the gun control was rather lax.

  1. charmaine is pretty funny in can’t buy love right now.

i hope she continues to act in comedies. i actually find her one of the best female in comedy roles. myolie is pretty good too.

  2. No offense Pandamao, Myolie is horrible in comedy. And Charmaine is not funny. Cute maybe, funny no.

  3. Is this the role she playing of a lady with a mind of a 10 years old? She looks normal to me. Does not see any kind of a person with disability.

I agree with Funn Lim both of Myolie and Charmaine are never good with comedy. I also wonder if both of them have done any plastic surgery on their face because they look so different and ugly.

I also notice that some actors and actresses have try to do cosmetic/veneer teeth and they definitely change their face structure and smile. When they smile you only see their teeth and gum and it’s so ugly…..

  4. I concur that Myolie exaggerates in her comedy. Maybe I just prefer mild comedy. I like the style of Dayo Wong.

Charmaine was ok in You’re Hired. This doesn’t make me convert to a fan but her comedic timing is quite nice.

  5. I think Charmaine was quite good in YH, however in CBML she is terrible OTT just like everyone else in the show. I don’t even think CBML is funny. It’s the cheapest kind of humour – slapstick. Moses is the worst of them all – reminds me horribly of his terrible performances in both Eye of the Beholder and HOG. And Myolie is not at all good with comedy – she was funny in WOIL I but everything else have been OTT.

And those pictures above are from DOL, not their new show. Charmaine has a mushroom hairstyle – very ugly. But apparently, that’s what TVB thinks 10 year olds have nowadays.

  6. When I was translating this article yesterday morning, I could not find any photos of Charmaine filming The Colorful Life of Sister Fa, so used old DOL photos.

JN, I don’t think Charmaine nor Myolie had any plastic surgery. Their features are similar to how they looked when they entered the industry.

  7. Which young TVB actress does comedy well? I think there is a gaping hole here. Myolie is frequently cast in romantic comedies, but aside from War of In-Laws, I did not enjoy her performance as much.

Among the older actresses, I enjoy Teresa Mo, Nancy Sit, Kingdom Yuen, and Esther Kwan in comedies. It requires good timing and I believe sometimes creative impromptu scenes between co-stars. Actresses such as Liza Wang seem rehearsed in her comedic roles, where she is following the script more or less. It is very difficult for good comedy to just happen on paper, for the scriptwriter to write a funny situation. Comedy is also very hard to be learned.

TVB has a few good comedic talents, such as Michael Tse, Wayne Lai, Bobby Au Yeung, Wong He. All these actors seem to throw a lot of their own personal elements and punch lines into the mix. It’s unfortunate that there seems to be an imbalance in young comedic talent at TVB.

  8. ‘I think Charmaine was quite good in YH, however in CBML she is terrible OTT just like everyone else in the show. I don’t even think CBML is funny. It’s the cheapest kind of humour – slapstick. I agree! Moses is OTT most of the time and Myolie is not funny! These two are overrated. I feel Moses is getting liked more because of his offscreen nice behaviour since I don’t find his acting great at all. He’s incompetent in serious series and severely OTT in comedies. God! Myolie is getting OTT in everything. Its like she’s acting in an opera, her make-up which is getting heavier and heavier especially the eyes implying that too. What’s she trying to hide in her face? Aging signs?

  9. I think Maggie Cheung and Steven Ma were really funny in Better Halves. Besides their excellent chemistry, their comedic timing and sparring were brilliantly delievered. And their facial expressions and gestures enhanced the over comedic vibes. Plus Steven’s Fuk Tou was absolutely adorable and cheeky though a scoundrel!

  10. Jayne – aside from the people you mentioned, I can’t really think of any. As for younger actors – perhaps Sammul Chan?

It’s not that I don’t think Moses can be funny – e.g. in Love Bond, but he just hasn’t been recently. I found him already very exaggerated in his comedic scenes back in HOG. Myolie was also much more natural in the past, but her acting has indeed gotten very exaggerated no matter if it’s comedy or drama. Another actress I see going down the path is Tavia. She used to be much more natural, but watching her in BTROC and MOL gives me a headache. Her acting is crazy OTT.

  11. ^ I don’t find Sammul funny at all in his comedy series. He doesn’t have what people call the comic timing but if you put him as a guy with a pretty face I will agree.

TVB promoted Wong Cho Lam a lot but this guy is also OTT to the max. I don’t find his crossdressing funny anymore.

  12. ^I don’t really remember any comedies with Sammul – I just remember that he often has the funny sidekick character, and I usually find him amusing.

I do think Wong Cho Lam can be funny as well, the problem is when actors starts going overboard and yes, WCL is definitely also going down that path.

  13. ^ A Bride for a Ride?

Many characters can be funny at times in a normal series given the scenes, but it doesn’t mean they are funny or have comic timing. We’re talking about people who really have excellent comedy skills like Bobby.

  14. Clamine, Steven Ma is quite good in comedies. I forgot to mention Kenneth Ma, who showed his funny side in “Love Guaranteed” and that’s when he caught my attention.

Bosco Wong has a good sense of humor in real life, which somehow doesn’t translate too well onscreen? For Bosco’s case, I feel that he’s trying to preserve his idol image too much and can’t truly let go, or being “funnily rude” like Eric Tsang.

In my previous comment, I meant to point out the lack of young female comedic talent. The men seem to let go of themselves more, but not the leading ladies as much.

I think Myolie is trying too hard to treat acting in a formulaic way. In “A Chip off the Old Block,” it almost seems as if she is acting in a rehearsed way , which seems to be a common way how actresses such as Liza Wang seem to interpret comedy. It really takes a lot of deconstruction and ability to make fun of yourself to push the audience to laugh.

In her younger days, Elvina Kong was pretty funny.

I also enjoyed Tavia’s chirpiness in the Mysteries of Love. Aside from some of the crying scenes, I enjoyed the animated enthusiasm of her character very much.

  15. I thought Myolie’s interpretation may be over the top but people back in the days are very exaggerated. I would say Myolie isn’t equipped with the quick, natural reaction to add-lip in those series as other, older promising actresses have gain over time.

I know there’s a large audience that dislike Myolie greatly but I am not sure if everyone thinks she’s talentless. They may just be annoyed with her role choices and interpretations. WOIL was superbly funny and I felt she was the one that carried the series with Liza. Bosco got very lucky to be recognized with the two of them.

Both WOIL (ancient and modern) were funny in my opinon and so was chip of the old block. A truly OTT acting came from A Gateau Affair but the cast assignments were a failure to begin with.

And now with Charmaine .. her interpretation in can’t buy my love has been very funny so far. She doesn’t have a great co-star to get the flame going, let’s admit – Moses is not funny. To me, Charmaine’s carrying this on her own, in terms of fun and upbeat.

It really is a “my cup of tea” thing .. some people find Dayo funny while others don’t. I think the stuff he says is more funny than the way he says it.

Better Halves – Maggie and Steven were drop-dead hilarious! I miss those two a lot.

  16. “Many characters can be funny at times in a normal series given the scenes, but it doesn’t mean they are funny or have comic timing. We’re talking about people who really have excellent comedy skills like Bobby.”

To me, someone who can deliver their lines in a funny way at the right time has comedic timing. Imo, few people have the comedy skills like Bobby. He’s the exception, not the rule.

Personally, I’m not liking Charmaine in CBML. I think she is too exaggerated, but I don’t believe it’s her fault as the entire cast with the exception of Suzanna and Susan are completely OTT. It was not as bad in episode 2, and it was also more naturally funny, but I really don’t think the show’s my cup of tea.

  17. I can’t stand Moses’ reprisal of his clueless looks, affected mannersims, and helium voice yet again and again. And he looks positively anorexic.

  18. Bosco Wong has a good sense of humor in real life, which somehow doesn’t translate too well onscreen? For Bosco’s case, I feel that he’s trying to preserve his idol image too much and can’t truly let go, or being “funnily rude” like Eric Tsang

I don’t like Eric Tsang’s brand of humor. It’s slapstick which is not my cup of tea. He’s like Jim Chim which also has “rude humor”. Dayo Wong’s style which is my cup of tea delivers humor in a more subtle way but has deep meaning.

As much as I like Bosco he isn’t meant to be a comedian like Bobby or Dayo Wong. Bosco isn’t suitable for laugh out loud humor. He’s more suitable for something softer and lighter such as Don Juan De Mercado. Although i love to see his presence onscreen I’m seeing many things to improve before he can be a true versatile character actor. He’s not a beautiful charismatic man like Daniel so he needs to depend on his acting to preserve his place in the industry.

Myolie’s brand of acting isn’t my cup of tea since it’s exaggerated kind of acting. I don’t like Myolie(and Liza’s) acting in both WOIL. Another includes A Chip Off the Old Block. Unlike most people the series isn’t my cup of tea and I found the acting style OTT. I didn’t feel what I feel from You’re Hired. Yes, I like comedy such as You’re Hired, or maybe I’m just biased at Dayo Wong’s type of comedy.

  19. I have to mention Chapman To. I don’t like him in that TVB sitcom, but recently he’s in the movie “La Comedie Humane” with Cho Lam, and I found their performance brings quite a nice feeling. Cho Lam did better in James Yuen movies than TVB’s OTT comedy. He was also good in the light comedy Don Juan which eerily reflects himself in real life.

  20. For me, Moses was the highlight in ‘Better Halves’. Maybe he has been getting OTT lately, but, from his older comedy series like ‘The Gentle Crackdown’, ‘Better Halves’, ‘Family Man’, he was great.

I find Charmaine funny in ‘You’re Hired’ Haven’t see enough of CBML to decide. But, Dayo has once praised Charmaine for able to think up a come back line on the spot when he unexpectedly throw her a line not from the script.

As for Myolie. She does not have natural talent in comedy. In an interview years back, when WOIL 1 was huge, she mentioned that her OTT act in WOIL was suggested by Bosco. So, her funniness in that series was thank to Bosco.

There’s not many actors who are so naturally funny he alone can make you laugh. Dayo Wong, Stephen Chow, Michael Hui are rare breed. To me, Moses is also under this breed. So, I considered those who can provide the laugh in a natural way when given a comedic role to play to be successful already. Some of those who perform adequate in a comedic role for me are

Sammul Chan – he perform adequately when given a funny role as seen in ‘A Bride for a Ride’ and ‘The Four’. He was really funny in those. He can be funny without getting OTT.

Kenneth Ma – as seen in his various comedic roles.

Steven Ma – also perform adequately in comedic role. Steven Ma provide most of the laugh in ‘A Watchdog’s Tale’.

Ada Choi – she was pretty good in ‘Fly with Me’. Stephanie Che is good.

Charmaine Sheh – at least, in ‘You’re Hired’

Maggie Cheung – King of Yesterday and Tomorrow.

Queenie Chu – I find her funny in ‘Fly with Me’.

Koni lui – Now, this girl really has potential. She did quite a number of funny roles and excel in it.

Maybe it’s biology. There has always been more male comedians than female comedians and I always find male comedians funnier than female. In stand up comedy circle, male comedians dominate. Is it because female is more sensitive?

  21. Will check out the Liza office sitcom to see how they cast perform in their comedy roles. I’ve only watch 1 episode. No enough to judge.

  22. Back in the old days I think Tony luong is the best in comedy.

  23. Moses is actually better at comedy than in drama. I find either you’re such a good actor that you can be great in both drama and comedy or such bad actor that in comedy it just comes natural.

There is a difference between really funny and act funny as per the script. Most of the named persons above can’t deliver a punchline properly. Wong Cho Nam is an exception since he is a comedian and he can deliver a punchline at the right moment. Slapstick comedy is a comedy but not the same as those comedy practised by Wong Cho Lam, Dayo Wong and also Stephen Chow who may be slapstick but his comedy is in the delivery.

So I am sorry to say none of the names except for one or two that I see in here is considered to be of that category. In you’re hired, it was very obvious who was the funny one and who is trying to act funny. They’re all actors in a comedy, not comedians in a series.

I saw a bit of Can’t Buy Me Love and to say Charmaine has no one to exchange witty lines is ridiculous. Moses is far better at being silly and funny and I found Charmaine tired and uninspiring and none of the acting seems natural. It all fell flat and felt like some rehearsal instead of a proper series.

Recently I watched back old classic TVB series with Stephen Chow and I laughed my head off. Now that is comedy and great acting and great scripting as well.

  24. Remember Old Time Buddies? Gallen Lo was funny? The actual funny one and a far better actor was what is his English name? The other one playing Patrick Tse? Ng Chun Yu is his chinese name.

I second this. Many people are actors in a comedy which means the script requires them to be funny; but not in a comedian’s way. As you said it: the way they deliver the punch lines.

I don’t care about Cho Lam but I acknowledge his talent as a comedian. His artiste friend commented in weibo that his stand-up comedy was good and has deep message. I don’t know how true it is but other than the times where he exaggerates, Cho Lam’s comedy can be subtle and affecting especially in screenwriter Yuen’s movies.

Dayo Wong’s strength lies in his subtle comedy too. He doesn’t need to be OTT to deliver great punch lines. His standup comedy is a huge thing in HK and his comedy has depth and not just for laugh.

Stephen Chow is acknowledged as one of the greatest comedian in HK entertainment industry. His movies have a special kind of slapstick comedy. Enough said 🙂

  26. “So I am sorry to say none of the names except for one or two that I see in here is considered to be of that category.”
To each his own. I don’t find Francis Ng funny in ‘Old Time Buddies’. I don’t find Bobby especially funny either. Dayo Wong, Michael Hui, Cheung Tat Ming, Moses Chan and Stephen Chow are special breed.

  27. Yes this really depends on one’s cup of tea. I for one don’t find Moses Chan or Michael Hui funny.

I’m looking forward for Louis Koo and Daniel’s “comedy acting” in Johnny To’s upcoming comedy haha 😀

  28. “Dayo Wong’s strength lies in his subtle comedy too. He doesn’t need to be OTT to deliver great punch lines. His standup comedy is a huge thing in HK and his comedy has depth and not just for laugh.”

I’ve watch several of Dayo’s stand up comedy show. Not all his jokes are funny, but, I like it because they usually have depth. His funny is the intelligent kind of funny. If u want really really laugh out loud funny, Michael Hui is the man.

“here is a difference between really funny and act funny as per the script.

Can act funny per script is still better than not funny even when following a funny script. Even when following the script, the actor still need to give the proper expression and deliver the line in a funny way. I find Steven Ma succeeded in AWDT.

  29. Can act funny per script is still better than not funny even when following a funny script. Even when following the script, the actor still need to give the proper expression and deliver the line in a funny way. I find Steven Ma succeeded in AWDT

In the end it still depends on preference. I don’t really like the comedy in AWDT, except by some veterans; but that’s just me. I also find Linda Chung still awkward in comedy no matter how she changed her look.

  30. “I’m looking forward for Louis Koo and Daniel’s “comedy acting” in Johnny To’s upcoming comedy haha”

Not sure about Daniel, but, Louis is a good comedian. He’s the expert in self-depreciating humour. Lol. A lot of his roles in comedy movies are him making fun of himself.
I first saw him act a funny role is in a juvenile prison movie called ‘The Young Ones’ He was very funny in the role.

Note: ‘The Young Ones’ was the debut movie for a number of young actors back then. You can see a very young Sammul Chan and Edwin Siu in the movie. But the star of the movie was Oscar Leung. He’s the lead actor and the movie follow his character’s story. Gregory Lee also give a good performance as the antagonist.

  31. Francis Ng – that’s the person you are referring to Funn.

everyone is forgetting about Johnson Li. He was pretty funny in the beginning but after “Gods with Liza” – I got kind of annoyed with his style.

Louis Yuen will always crack me up esp with a script from Miu Siu Ching.

Smartie Miu also someone that we forgot to mention.

  32. “Smartie Miu also someone that we forgot to mention”

    Who is Smartie Miu?

  33. “Not sure about Daniel, but, Louis is a good comedian. He’s the expert in self-depreciating humour”

Louis isn’t a great comedian but he is competent in comedy acting. As much as I like Daniel he’s quite awkward in comedy. Love Undercover1 and 2 are mostly carried by Miriam imo. However this is a break from his action movies and I want to be amused 😛

  34. “everyone is forgetting about Johnson Li. He was pretty funny in the beginning but after “Gods with Liza” – I got kind of annoyed with his style.”

Damn. How can I forget my fave TVB comedian? My bad.

    “Who is Smartie Miu?”

I think she meant Cutie Mui.

  35. I forgot about Johnson Li too. He is very good at impersonation doesn’t he? Is he rich in real life? Because there were more than one joke on his many women and his vast amount of money.

  36. Johnson Li is wealthy, in my books. I think he’s got the Stephen Chow cockiness but he holds it back a little better.

Yes -I meant Cutie, sorry about that. Hands down, she makes anything funny!

  37. I find that moses is not funny. I didn’t like his performance in HOG, in the eye of the beholder, and now can’t buy me love. He looks tired.

Charmaine on the other hand I think is getting so much better at comedy. I agree that she’s almost carrying this new series on her own even though it might be too early to tell.

Other good ones are wong cho lam, dayo wong, johnson lee, and of course stephen chow’s the kinggggg!

sammul chan is quite funny. he has potential but there’s room for improvement.

  38. charmaine comedy acting is great !!! she makes me laugh the most .i dont get some of you dont like charmaine>

  39. I actually find Charmaine comedic skill better in CBML than You’re Hired. How actors act in a comedy depend largely on what type of serie and what the producer want. We can’t blame the actors who follow what the producer wants. Usually Dayo one will have those standing comedy style. CBML present the exeggerate method. Either way, both manage to make me laugh and I enjoy it. I prefer CBML comedy than those stupid suppose to be funny movie. The recent one with Ah Sa, Joey Yung and Ray Lam was a completely stupid and unfunny comedy movie. It is a total mess that it turn me off after watching the preview. No wonder it fare so badly. Even those with Louise Koo was stupid and meaningless especially that 008 movie that suppose to have sell well. Can’t really understand the taste of people in HK.

  40. Sometimes I think it really depend on preferrence. I like Charmaine and Myolie in comedy.

  41. i believe this series will break the record of square pegs, lets not compare and just enjoy the drama, hope the rating will continue to rise.
