Early this year, celebrated TVB singer-actor Raymond Lam (林峯) was exposed to have fallen in love with Mainland female starlet Mavis Pan Shuang Shuang (潘霜霜). However, after a period of intense love, Mavis Pan had repeatedly publicly divulged their secret dating history to the outside world. However, despite that harrowing romance being a thing of the past, it was rather apparent that Raymond had been terribly scarred for life as he revealed that he still felt heart-wrenched upon thinking about it from time to time…This interview marks the first of five interviews revealing the inner world of Raymond Lam.
Raymond brooded, “To me, love is actually a very private and personal matter. This belief was further instilled in me after I became an artiste, such that I would do anything to protect my other half. However, as much as I want to, I absolutely understand that reality is always different from one’s rationalization. In that case, I shall just try my best then! Actually, everyone should have already known about the details of my love life so I shall not deliberately dwell upon it here. In fact, I can tell you that I have been portrayed dating in the tabloid fodders much more times than I have actually dated in real life.”
Buried himself in work to forget the romance but ended up physically and emotionally exhausted
Raymond continued, “Actually, what exactly is love? When I was much younger, I would think of love as being very simple. Dating meant that we would roam the streets, eat meals and catch a movie together. In fact, I thought of it as being something like a set meal. However, after growing up and undergoing some experiences, I realized that love isn’t that superficial after all. Honestly, if you asked me whether my previous relationship was most painful, I would reply you that yes, yes it was one of the most painful experiences that I ever had. In fact, the impact was so excruciating that I haven’t been able to completely put down this emotional baggage as yet. It is, however, perfectly normal to feel this way as it is only human to feel upset reminiscing about some scenes or a person after the end of every relationship hence I shall just take it as an experience in life! I still remembered that I was filming TVB ancient periodic drama, Back To The Three Kingdoms《回到三國》, at that time and in order to forget the unhappy matters, I even tried to use work to numb myself. Although I kept telling myself not to think too much, it was really hard not to, especially with the relentless pursuing from the media on a daily basis. To be honest, I was absolutely physically and emotionally worn out. In any case, I have already said my piece on this matter in the previous interviews. With that being said, I would love to take this opportunity to thank the media for treating me well and leaving me some leeway at that point in time. Apart from that, I must say that the media does understand me very well on a certain level and had projected it in their reports such that everyone could view this matter logically by putting themselves in my shoes. For this, I truly am very thankful to you guys (the media)!”

Feels that he should follow fate but accepts blind-dating
Raymond wondered aloud, “Actually, who doesn’t have an experience in love? My failure this time ’round doesn’t mean that I wouldn’t dare to venture into sea of love again. However, I would tread even more cautiously for now as the society in today’s modern times are extremely complicated such that the thoughts of many people are now distorted. It even comes to a point where their views on matters have become very perplexing. Although not everyone is like that, I would still tend to have my misgivings. This is also the reason why I don’t have many friends. Have I ever thought about getting married? Well, I don’t even have a prospective dating partner yet! I do, however, admit that I’m a contradictory person. When my niece/nephew was born, I felt that my sister had already helped us to fulfill the child-bearing obligations to our ancestors. However, on second thought, I am after all the eldest son in my family [re: An ancient Chinese belief that the eldest son has a responsibility to produce a heir or rather a son to carry on the bloodline of the family] and after witnessing such a scene, I found myself subconsciously imagining what would happen if I had a child of my own in the future. Actually, given my current age, it’s about time that I should set up a family of my own as I wouldn’t be as robust in taking care of my kids when I’m much older. Sometimes, I do think that I might even look handsome hugging my kids out on the streets! But of course I do know that this won’t be an easy task as it is very difficult to meet someone who is truly right for you.”
“Furthermore, it’s really complex to see the true nature of a person such that you can’t fathom what the person truly sees in you, what she actually likes about you. I must clarify that these are not afterthoughts left behind from being badly hurt in love but I just felt that I wasn’t mature enough to handle the matter at that point in time. In the past, there was no such thing as a dating life for me. As such, my family often thought about arranging for me to go on blind dates but, in actual fact, I secretly opposed the idea as I felt that blind dates were way too old-fashioned and kept thinking in my heart, “What kind of era are we currently living in?”. In the end, I did not attend any of the blind dates arranged. Despite my obvious signs of reluctance, my mother has recently resumed her former self of anxiously finding me another prospective girlfriend again by distributing a “gathering of heroes” invitation to all her distant relatives and friends, such that it’s akin to announcing that I’m ready for another relationship. However, this is really not the current case for me as I have become less of a forward-looking individual and more of a person who believes in following fate. But, honestly, isn’t life supposed to be like that? Having our upsides and downsides are only part and parcel of life. In fact, who doesn’t want to be loved and fondled in this world? After all, I’m always the one cajoling others when I step into character during filming hence it’s only natural to inevitably hope that someone else would please me after a long day of filming! But it’s okay, I’m not completely disheartened as I firmly believe that that day will eventually come.”

1. I believe he was emotional.

In one of the photos above, he was wearing a red cardigan showing off his male cleavage and tight jeans. I puzzled over the look. Why is horoscope reading so popular in determining a couple’s potential compatibility? What if the horoscope said the couple is incompatible, would it become a self-fulfilling prophecy then?
Do astrology and horoscopes unnecessarily label people and conveniently assign attributes and tendencies to a large pool of people born in under the same sign? I have many friends born under same sign, but we’re all different.
Perhaps I’m lazy in keeping track of everyone’s signs to determine if we are all compatible. I think I also know myself and people close to me well to not need to depend on horoscope readings for more analysis of the psyche.

I do it for fun only. I myself didn’t study horoscope and never read the daily horoscope on the papers because I don’t believe in it. But, it’s interesting to read about your birth sign and see what it says about you and how much it match.
I see horoscope as a field of statistics. Face reading and palm readings are also statistics. They are the result of many years of observation and documentation. There might be some truth in it. Some truth, but, not the whole truth, since a person’s temperament is influence by more than the 12 zodiac sign.
Personally, I feel that my temperament match my numerology sign more than my star sign.
What I see it, these studies all arise from human beings attempt to understand life, make sense of life, give meaning to life and have more control over their live.

Belief in horoscopes and astrology (in predicting daily destiny) also asks you to believe in pre-destination. As for making sense of life and give meaning to life, wouldn’t study of religion, philosophy, and seeking spirituality be better? These fields ask us to look into our nature and seeking wisdom, rather than reading cryptic horoscopes and looking for truths in them.
A good book with interesting observations on human tendencies can be equally thought provoking. 🙂

Yes, pre-destination is one aspect of religion which I have the most difficulty in embracing, possibly because it is hard for me to see my life beyond my current form, to believe that I existed in past lives or their will be future rebirth.
But I find it is helpful and enlightening to take bits and pieces and apply to my personal journey where possible.

Forgive me. I am in my question-asking mode lately, not trying to be difficult or zone in or target on anyone to make her feel uncomfortable. If anyone feels that way, feel free to just ignore my questions.
If there is a true quest to seek deeper meaning in life, don’t you think religion or philosophy offers a more extensive evaluation? Or it is considered the more difficult method when horoscopes are the easier way? Horoscopes seem to be a quick, non-commital way to just accept what you are being told.
At the same time, if the general response to reading a horoscope is to shrug off the guidance or forget about it, what good would it do? So it sounds like horoscopes serve more in entertainment value rather than offer any true guidance.
As for fortune-telling, anytime you have to pay money to procure this type of guidance in life, wouldn’t the advice be skewed? Wouldn’t the fortune-teller devise some impending “crisis” is going to happen in your near-future life, so that you will consistently go back to the person and pay him to correct it?
I find it difficult to seek guidance from those who do not know me personally.

We were having an conversation in which we were exploring the purpose or reasons for popularity of horoscopes. Since I don’t understand the reasons for the popularity, I asked why. You mentioned the purpose was to offer people guidance in life. So I explored that there were other avenues to find this guidance as well.
Isn’t it natural to further develop upon stated points? Again, this is just how I tend to think things through. Not that I’m trying to convince anyone of my perspective.

Sometimes, more extensive is not good, especially philosophy which has a wide possibility and many different ideas. Even the students of a certain philosopher ended up with their own philosophy. Studying too much might end up making you more confused.

No difficult is not always better. Thorough is what I’m looking for. It depends on the issue and the level of time and effort needed to understand an issue. For the topic of “seeking guidance/ meaning in life,” wouldn’t thorough be better than simplistic? And there is no time limit, only limited by your own patience, as to how long you want to devote to the effort. Even if the answers don’t come easily and may be met with discouragement, confusion, and frustration along the way. If something is important (and it applies to the chasing and fulfillment of goals in other aspects), then you will not give it up just because it is difficult. Hopefully the chase/ process will not lead to unhappiness, as fulfillment may be the goal, but being on the action path is just as important.

It requires a somewhat deeper understanding of another’s thinking, a questioning and evaluation before deciding on the value of the material. Obviously, how much of our thinking is truly novel and hasn’t been reflected upon centuries ago by other people before us? I do think that humanity’s quest is the same, and tendencies and human nature as well, although circumstances may be different.
Reading and studying subjects such as philosophy is really meant to open up a curiosity of seeking “truth” and that may sometimes be a personal truth. Usually, it will likely pose more questions than give you answers that you automatically accept. The process involves understanding of your own perspective, other differing perspectives out there, evaluating the reasons behind it and applying it to your own personal circumstances before you can evaluate it and there will likely not be a conclusive determination, as our thoughts continue to be shaped by new ideas we come across. Reading philosophy is intended to set you off along the self-discovery process. If you have not carefully evaluated the material first before acceptance, then it becomes blind-acceptance. Hopefully getting wiser with age, but that is what I enjoy about growing older.
Thus getting back to the horoscope/ astrology discussion. I was only asking a few questions to understand before I can evaluate. I’m open-minded and just trying to understand the differing perspective, as long as you enjoy the exchange along with me. 🙂

Thanks, I enjoy thinking about many subject matters. The process of understanding something a little deeper interests me. Human relationships and tendencies also interest me. I should have studied psychology hehe, but not too late to become an amateur one.
One of the great things about an open community like this is that we can bare our thoughts without “proper discovery.” Coming across like minds or different minds is as necessary in our self-discovery process.
Beneath the gossip stories, they are stories of human interest, of relationships, of friendships, of betrayal, of experiences we can relate to more than we think. Our favorite celebrities just happen to be the subjects of the news.

I believed all these so-called spontaneous prank calls are actually all pre-arranged between the callers and their ‘victims’. It is just a matter of showing courtesy to their colleagues to not put them in a predicament of not their doing, or catch them unaware or at a bad time, or invade their privacy with such prank calls on public radio, no less.
Just like how even close friends would not show up unannounced at someone’s house without a courtesy phone call first to indicate their intention and to make sure they are at home, what’s more catching your colleagues unaware on a public radio during their off time and having them promptly put on high alert with their words.

I meant I don’t like him. But you’re right – I still care… about the gossips. Admittedly, I like to read about people/things that I don’t like or that upsets me. lol
If you have fun doing so then it’s great, I support you. However, if those news make you feel upset then don’t read them. It’s no good torturing yourself by some strangers you do not like.
I think he should just make a fresh start and find someone else and forget the past. Of course easier said than done. I’ve been hurt before so I know what the feeling was like but I really hope that he finds happiness with the right girl. I like Raymond despite rumours or whatnot, and thinks that apart from being a good actor, he is a nice person. Maybe 2012 will be a better year for him.
