Raymond Wong Gains 20 Pounds for Role in New ViuTV Drama
After quietly leaving TVB, Raymond Wong (黃浩然) signed with Louis Koo’s (古天樂) Sky High Entertainment in 2019. Since then, Raymond starred in several big-budget dramas, including Wonder Women (多功能老婆) and Modern Dynasty (家族榮耀). Although it has been relatively quiet for Raymond, the 49-year-old actor announced he will be starring in ViuTV drama, Digital Life (數字人生), alongside Catherine Chau (周家怡), Ngo Ka-nin (敖嘉年), and Stephen Wong (黃祥興).
Gaining 20 pounds for his role, Raymond will star as a middle-aged man who was cheated out of money due to a scam. Wrought with guilt and shame, Raymond suffers through a mid-life crisis.
Raymond admitted he had to give up exercising for nearly four months and focus on increasing his food intake. “Some scenes require me to take off my clothes because revealing my gut will give a stronger impression of middle age. As an actor, this is what we must do often – taking on new challenges and giving the audience a fresh perspective. I could’ve strapped on a fake belly, but the audience would be able to tell that it’s fake from the plastic look and it wouldn’t be as believable.”
Accepting this filming project for ViuTV, Raymond was asked whether he is afraid TVB would no longer seek him out for work. Raymond responded, “A lot of people film for different stations. What’s more important is the script and people I will be working with. As long as it is suitable, there will be opportunities for collaboration. I don’t believe that if you go work for one station, then another station will blacklist you. I don’t think it’s like that anymore.”
On whether he hopes to take part in the sequel of Twilight of the Warriors (九龍城寨), Raymond believes his management company will find work that suits him. “[My company] cherishes each of their artistes. They will not give up an opportunity to help us. If it’s suitable for you, then they will cast you. Of course, if I get the opportunity, I would be very happy.”
Offscreen, Raymond is actually a level-headed person who strives for balance between work and family life. In addition to managing several successful dry seafood stores, Raymond also sets aside time to spend time with his family. Filming commercials for his business, Raymond admitted juggling two roles as an actor and businessman can be difficult.
