“Resident Playbook” to Air on April 12

South Korean network tvN’s Resident Playbook has finally confirmed its premiere date of April 12 after some delays. Resident Playbook is the first spin-off of the Hospital Playlist series and tells the story of first-year obstetrics and gynecology residents at the Jongno branch of the Yulje Medical Center. The Hospital Playlist series portrayed a beautiful, idealized depiction of the medical world. While Resident Playbook maintains the warm atmosphere of the original series, it explores new directions.

The production team shared, “Just like in the original series, we will still tell heart-warming, everyday stories. However, the focus this time will be on the growth of young doctors, bringing a completely different kind of resonance from Hospital Playlist.” A major challenge is the stark difference between the drama and the real-world medical industry.

Last February, resident doctors collectively resigned in protest against the government’s decision to raise the limit of medical school admissions. The dispute has been going on for 13 months and even affected the broadcast schedule of Hospital Playlist. However, the situation has changed this year. The South Korean government promised last month to freeze the quota of new medical school admissions at about 3,000 every year and resident doctors have gradually returned to their positions. According to statistics from South Korea’s Ministry of Health and Welfare, as of the end of last month, 393 resident doctors were working at the five major hospitals in Korea.
