Roger Kwok and Charmaine Sheh Win TV King and TV Queen at 2014 TVB Anniversary Awards
Continuing their domination in television awards this year, Roger Kwok (郭晉安) and Charmaine Sheh (佘詩曼) won TV King and TV Queen respectively at the 48th TVB Anniversary Awards, which concluded on December 15.
Crime drama Line Walker <使徒行者>, which was praised for its suspenseful plot, won Best Drama. Line Walker received 20.3 percent of 50 percent of viewer votes and 41.6 percent of 50 percent of TVB professional judges’ votes. The series was overwhelmingly popular when it was aired on Mainland Chinese streaming platforms, receiving 1.4 billion views.
Roger Kwok Credits Children for Making Him a Better Person and Actor
As the guest presenter for Best Actor, Chilam Cheung (張智霖) attempted to lighten the tension by cracking a joke. Chilam said, “You can win the award even if you’re absent from the ceremony.” Roger’s expression turned serious and viewers thought that Raymond Lam (林峯) may be the winner. However, Chilam unveiled Roger’s victory and announced that Roger received over 60 percent of combined viewers and TVB professional judges’ votes for his performance in Black Heart White Soul <忠奸人>.
Although this is the third time that Roger has received the TV King title, he was still nervous in accepting the award on stage. He said, “When I dropped off my son at school this morning, I told him Daddy will not be home tonight since I have to attend the awards ceremony. My son told me to bring home all the awards. I told him, ‘Son, I have already taken all the awards. After you and your sister were born, both of you made my love grow, allowing me to lessen undesirable traits such as jealousy and arrogance. This allowed me to face my work comfortably, and for my emotions to flow freely [onscreen].’” Roger thanked his wife Cindy Au (歐倩怡) and his children for their love and support.
Charmaine Sheh’s Popularity is Unbeatable
Making a strong comeback in Line Walker, Charmaine’s popularity has been unstoppable. Aside from Best Actress, Charmaine also won the My Favorite Female Character award. Charmaine received all 50 percent of votes from TVB’s professional judges’ votes and 28.6 percent of the 50 percent of viewer votes to secure her Best Actress win.
“Thanks to TVB for making my life more interesting. It’s not easy to win an award. It requires many sacrifices and much luck. I’m very lucky to have landed this role and come across a good producer in Jazz Man (文偉鴻).” With tears in her eyes, Charmaine said, “I frequently have a lot of stress, but [my mother] always has a bright smile for me. I’m very grateful to have you by my side.”
Line Walker also boosted the popularity of its cast members, helping Benz Hui (許紹雄) secure the My Favorite Male Character award.
Ram Chiang and Josie Ho Win Best Supporting Acting Awards
Loved by peers and viewers for his talent, Ram Chiang (蔣志光) won Best Supporting Actor for his performance in Come On, Cousin <老表，你好hea!>. Elena Kong (江美儀) was so thrilled, she kissed Ram on the lips when presenting him the award.
“A swift horse needs a talent scout’s [recognition]. Twenty years ago, this happened but I loved my freedom. Twenty years later, a knight appeared and said he will help me get to my destination. Many thanks to Wong Cho Lam (王祖藍)!” Ram thanked Cho Lam for creating his breakout role in Come On, Cousin. As Ram concluded his acceptance speech with a few quick musical notes, Cho Lam, Linda Chung (鍾嘉欣), and Virginia Lok (樂易玲) broke into tears.
Dark horse candidate Josie Ho (何超儀) beat out Sharon Chan (陳敏之) in winning Best Supporting Actress. Although Josie is not a contracted TVB artiste, her powerful performance as an inmate in Tomorrow is Another Day <再戰明天> left a deep impression.
Louis Cheung and Priscilla Wong Win Most Improved Artiste Awards
Louis Cheung (張繼聰) had a breakout year and showed his acting range in Black Heart White Soul and Come On, Cousin. While the 35-year-old singer is not a newcomer to the entertainment industry, he has found a successful niche in TVB television dramas. Accepting the Most Improved Actor award before loud applause, Louis thanked TVB management and producers for casting him, as well as the station’s staff members. Louis is also grateful for wife Kay Tse’s (謝安琪) support and his family.
Although Priscilla Wong (黃翠如) was rumored to be cast on the sidelines due to internal TVB politics, she beat out hot favorite Samantha Ko (高海寧) in winning Most Improved Actress. In her acceptance speech, Priscilla said, “Many thanks to Catherine Tsang (曾勵珍) for giving life to my artiste career and Sandy Yu (余詠珊) for singling me out when I was still a student. My weaknesses haven’t changed much; fortunately my strengths are still here. Thanks to Virginia Lok and everyone who loves me.” Priscilla’s boyfriend Edwin Siu (蕭正楠) smiled proudly at Priscilla’s victory.
Veteran actor Tam Ping Man (譚炳文) received the Lifetime Achievement Award. Returning to TVB after a decade-long absence, Tam said, “TVB is popular where there are Chinese people. There are many Film Kings and Film Queens who originated from TVB! Hope TVB’s ratings continue to rise and earn big money so everyone can be happy!”

same old actresses/actors. Is TVB this small where we only see same people. They are giving out awards just because is required although they really don’t have anyone that actually deserve them.
I don’t see any value with the awards in these winners.
CHARMAINE SHEH, ROGER KWOK AND BENZ HUI deserves their awards. They have great acting skills and TVB is lucky to have them!
Because they don’t have any other people to compete with. My point is just always these same faces and is boring seeing them over and over. With other TV companies, they have so many actors/actresses to perform and always different winners.

I am the third one on here to think that “seriously don’t think Charmaine is good at all.” I seriously was shocked when she won the BA award. I thought for sure that Linda Chung should have won, especially for her role in Tiger Cubs 2.
Obviously she and others won’t win as long as Charmaine stays with TVB.
Don’t forget ….. acting is very subjective. Charmaine Sheh’s acting in “Line Walker” was recognized and highly appreciated by most people, but of course not her “anti-fans”. Majority of people did not think Linda Chung or Kate Tsui did a good job this year.

There could be a few people who did not like Charmaine Sheh’s acting in “Line Walker”, but not the majority. At least 100% of the professional judging panel voted for Charmaine Sheh, which meant something to the artistes.
Those awards may not mean anything to some people, but they mean a lot to TVB artistes. Personally I think this year’s results were very fair and justified, especially Sharon Chan was not on the list of winners.

TVB anniversary awards never had Best Theme Song Category? So happy they added that in. I am still playing and playing the theme for Line Walker in my head over and over again non-stop.

The results are fair enough! but don’t like Charmaine’s attitude toward receiving the Most popular character award. She treats it like something not important by putting it on the floor under her seat. She even have very brief speech for that award while saying a lot for BA. When she receives BA, she holds it in her hand the whole time even when hugging Roger. Back then when other people like Kenneth Ma or Myolie Wu received character awards, they treated with much more appreciation. Can’t deny she is a great actress but her arrogance is too high.

When she had her speach for MPC she did hold the award the whole time and she thanked ppl around her and jazz for making a great character. And of course the speech for BA should be longer then MPC since it’s a bigger award.

I agree with you, Jupi. Winnie just didn’t like Charmaine Sheh and found every little way to criticize her. Every artiste acts differently. Charmaine might not even notice what she did with her MFC trophy. I don’t expect people would care about those little gestures ….. to find a way to criticize an artiste. After all, “Best Actress” award is more important to an artiste, especially it is 50% audience votes and 50% professional judging panel votes.

“arrogant” ………….. could also mean “confident”. Different people have different interpretations. Sometimes you need to be arrogant to show your confidence.
the difference is that if you are arrogant you disdain on other ppl,while if confident you believe in yourself without being disdainful. i think charmaine is more confident than arrogant otherwise she wouldnt have so many friends and fans that support her.the fact that she put her award on the floor dont say that much to me,its more important how she treats the ppl around her.

Watched TVB’s Anniversary Awards Ceremony on my TVPad eventually. Don’t think Charmaine Sheh was arrogant at all. She just said that it was not her best acting in “Line Walker” because she wanted to act even better in future. Nothing wrong with it! She just wanted to improve more ……
Happy that Line Walker swept most of the awards the whole team actors was really good in this drama everyone was well deserve including Raymond and Micheal Mui. Love the theme song as well. Roger Kwok was awesome in BHWS not a surprise to won BA.
Most of the results were expected, with only Josie’s being a minor surprise. Pleased that Ram won, very underrated actor and one of my favourites.

i’m quite satisfied with the results this year. i didn’t vote for any of the winners of the 5 “voteable” categories but i am pleased with each and think all were well deserved. i am happiest about ram’s win. josie was a complete surprise, but not undeserving; none of the finalists really stood out for me this year. i hated her get up though – she looked like a witch against the other actresses.

I like this explanation. Knowing how superstitious these folks can be, that might be the reason why she wore that hilarious neck brace. Seriously i couldn’t stop laughing at some of the outfits. Most fair tvb awards I’ve seen in a loooong time apart from Priscilla wining which I’m sure was rigged. Her acting has made no improvements whatsoever… Not bad not great either. Not surprised as tvb feels the need to atleast rigged one award. Leanne Li should’ve won honestly! Her improvement was vey noticeable & has gotten a lot of good reviews of her acting.

i dont think that other actresses did a bad job but its more that charmaine came back to tvb on the right time with the right role,of course its undoubtedly that she did a good job,but there’s just not much competition this year.

Since 2014, Herman Ho (husband of Sandy Yu) is in charge of The Voice and well, we will see that JSG is full of The Voice member – very – soon. This is what Sandy Yu can do, lolz.
On the other hand, Im happy, very happy for Benz to win :D. It is a nice choice of TVB as Benz is a very good actor. Better than giving it to some beloved biological son of TVB. Much better.

Okay, so I haven’t watched tomorrow is another day so I can’t judge Josie’s performance but PRISCILLA REALLY? As I have mentioned earlier, SUCH AN OVERRATED ACTRESS. Got opportunities that others with potential didn’t. And I supported Samantha for this. Such a pity she couldn’t win it.
Roger probably the first tv king to have received so much support from other artists every artist saw roger winning due to his powerful acting
Roger Kwok seems to be a nice person, but I don’t think highly of his acting. He acts better in those villainous or semi-villainous characters, but not in good characters. He tends to exaggerate his characters a bit.
Hope to see roger in better roles instead of just silly comedies
Very pleased with this year’s results. There weren’t many surprises as most categories had a clear front runner. Per usual the best supporting actor category was the highlight of the night. I’m a big fan of Power and hope he can win one day, but Ram (and Benz) definitely deserved it this year. For the most improved categories I feel Louis and Priscilla were the more talented nominees, but I think it goes against the concept of most improved when Louis only recently joined TVB and Priscilla is already a lead actress. I think the most improved award should go to people who had a breakthrough performance and I just don’t feel Louis or Priscilla had such a performance. Lastly, I don’t understand the hype for Line Walker. The plot really didn’t work for me. I would have preferred Black Heart White Soul or even the Ultimate Addiction.
My favourite Male is 100% public votes. It doesnt need a **** head to know impossible benz hui can win it. Obviously raymond got the highest votes or at least roger or even worst RUCO. But this tvb really never changed. 2012 also the same playing dirty.
Ruco is super popular in HK. Maybe on par with Raymond and definitely more popular than Roger.

The reality is closer than your expectation. Count the number of fans appeared yesterday in TVB and you will see who is popular in HK :P. If you cant find the pictures, you can go to KuangaiTVB weibo or check On.CC news, there are pictures of fan groups.

I am also surprised that Benz Hui had more votes than Raymond Lam or other TVB siu sangs in Hong Kong for “My Favourite Male Character”. Young fans wouldn’t support Benz Hui and older fans didn’t do much voting. The results were unexpected.

And, Benz’s character is more popular and favorable amongst the HK audience. Please don’t think this is a popularity contest lol. If it was, he would’ve won in 2012.

And even “if” he has a lot of fans, he still wouldn’t have won. He lost the same category in 2012. Bao seed is simply not as popular as Benz, it’s that simple.

@raymond & @jason: links to prove how popular Ruco is. Heard that his fans was the biggest turnout on the awards night. Some even came from as far as Malaysia. When he was filming Captain of Destiny in Hengdian, they even flew in to China to visit him. They waited till the end of awards to see him off to show their full support even though he didn’t win anything.

Quality wise I agree with you. I thought Overachievers was a better story or Ruse Of Engagement. But you can’t deny it is gimmicky and marketing and perhaps huge young fanbase.

Line Walker is just another cop/action drama with the overused “guess-who” element. Zero creativity to warrant the Best Drama award.
Script wise ….. it is not the best storyline.
Acting wise …….. “Line Walker” had the best acting from the cast. Charmaine Sheh, Raymond Lam, Michael Miu, Benz Hui, and Elena Kong, acting major characters, all did very well in the drama series. Even Sammy Sum did well as a new actor. The only weak artiste was Sharon Chan. 6 out of 7 artiste did very well in “Line Walker”, which made it the Best Drama Series in 2014.
The winners it was quite obvious this year, TVB wasn’t able to rigged it even though they wanted too. No award to Raymond Lam marks officially their separation. A couple more candidate might not renew their contract next year. Anyway the awards finally looked fair to the viewers and public opinion. Josie was the shocker. Priscilla didn’t watch much of her acting can’t judge. Congrats to all the winner.
Benz Hui can have more fans than lam fung? This is the joke of the day. The male artist is 100% public votes. TVB is too hillarious. But of course LF is no longer a tvb artist and not likely to film any drama any time sooner.
Because Benz character is Laughing Gor in impact. I am not surprised he won. Maybe just maybe those who voted are not just young fans. Voting has no age limit and perhaps Benz has his fanbase of all ages who takes the effort to vote for him.

Benz Hui is a lovable guy and he made his character come alive. Even as a villain, he made me cheer for him.

Josie Ho is a very deserving winner in my book. I love her performance in TIAD since her character appear. Her acting was so good.
She did better than the series itself. Later on the series just lost its direction.
Now most will argue isn’t Josie a lead too but I think her nomination is correct. Should be supporting.

The rest were as predicted although Priscilla winning was surprising as well considering she has so few series out.
I really like the best series mash up, showing quality in presentation and I also like the fact the voiceless producers and production crew now has a voice and is allowed to say their thanks. Come next year we may have best make up, costume, script, etc which means starting this year the evolving awards is slowly turning into Emmy awards except still with a bit of fixing but not too obvious. THe lifetime achievement award should have been done better and in the middle of the show. Those useless of stage banter should be scrapped if not it is still typical TVB. ANd nominees should sit off the stage with the audience and then, maybe it IS Emmys. A good show overall, whatever is the results.

Love ROger’s suit. Charmaine looks like she is walking on stilts with nails. Looks like she is suffering. Not her worst fashion statement but yes, quite weird. But better than Myolie’s borin bubble dress. And what is with the wedding gown/white theme? Linda especially? Then others were like bridesmaid, some I call them grumpy aunt (Josie, Maggie)
For once they gave the awards to the right people! Don’t agree with Best Drama. Line Walker was so overrated! I didn’t watch Josie’s series, but I’m sure she could easily beat out Sharon Chan even if she was half asleep on the job.

What surprised me was Best Supporting Actress: Josie Ho (何超儀) for Tomorrow is Another Day and Best Variety Special：A Time of Love because A time of Love had such low rating and was very boring. Everyone else we pretty much knew was going win.
An interesting night as the 2 emcees were lively in their questioning, etc. The results of the awards were fair, I thought. Of course, it was a foregone conclusion as to who should win the highest awards of the night. I’m glad that Roger and Charmaine were the winners of the night. It was an enjoyable show.

Satisfied with all major awards, except Priscilla Wong. Since she joined TVB, it was so easy for her to get awards (like Best Host) and so easy to jump to 1st line actress. Seriously nothing spectacular about her performance. Really feel that Selena Li should win Most Improved this year with her breakthrough role, but so unfair she didn’t even get nominated in that category.

Nancy Wu definitely deserves a mention. She is a natural and is capable of all types of roles – absolutely superb compared to the more popular (and one-dimensional) Charmaine and Linda and others. Wish Nancy had won my Favourite Female Actress for her role in Overachievers.
Agree! Totally pick Nancy Wu over Josie Ho. She’s a great actress. Tavia is good as well. I like Linda, but I think her acting sucks in tiger cubs 2. Also like Kate, but I would say none of them are as good as Charmaine. I would pick Tavia if there was no Charmaine.
