Ruco Chan Responds to Rumors of Being Sidelined to Supporting Roles
Although Ruco Chan (陳展鵬) makes an appearance in TVB drama The Invisibles, the popular actor was relegated to a cameo role. According to the rumor mill, Ruco refused to film TVB dramas after a failed salary negotiation and the meaty role was replaced by Kenneth Ma (馬國明). As the rumors continue to mount, Rucco finally provides a response.
Speaking to the media at a promotional event, Rucco denies being disheartened by his salary negotiation, “In fact, in the past two years, the market hadn’t been great so I think there aren’t that many people who would think about getting a salary increase. I only hope that everyone will get through the difficult times.”
Ruco adds, “In the past two years, I haven’t responded to the reporters. Honestly, looking at the dramas released, I am in a lot of them. I need to focus on playing many different roles.”
Earlier, a rumor alleged that Ruco was worried about leaving TVB and stayed to play supporting roles because he wanted to support his family. In response, Ruco shares “Actually, I discussed this with my family two years ago. I actually gave up an 8-digit number to stay with TVB. I also wondered if I was too impulsive to give it up. I continued to be with the company. Honestly, the most important factor [for staying] was the human relationships and keeping promises.”

I am not sure I understand the logic. This is a lose-lose situation. Supporting roles get him less exposure and the company already paid for him for a contract so they would be under utilizing him.
Agree. In one of KM’s interviews, he said he would take all kinds of roles because he didn’t care, as long as he could participate in a drama; however, he later learned from Roger Kwok that he shouldn’t be doing this because the audience already viewed his status as a lead actor. If he were to play anything lower, it would confuse the audience, so it doesn’t make sense for Ruco to play supporting roles, even though he “[focuses] on playing many different roles.” Maybe he could main villain roles such as The Mysteries of Love or the current one, The Invisibles. As for the company, I don’t think they are losing much because they still have ties with Ruco. They can put him on the side while promoting new blood.
Tbh, I think Ruco should stay in his leading roles while he’s still red hot from A Fist Within Four Walls because it’s hard to climb back up if he keeps this up.
Isn’t Ruco Chan one c? Even his ig is..
I read somewhere that Ruco couldn’t be in a main role for The Invisibles because he was too busy filming other stuff? If you look at the cast it’s basically I’ve got the Power 2.0 So I doubt he was sidelined on purpose. Anyway, seeing as TVB don’t have enough leads in the first place, side-lining Ruco would be a dumb idea.
I don’t think playing cameo roles every now and then for a lead actor is that big of a deal as long as most of their roles are leading roles. If you look at Korean dramas, they always have lead actors appearing in dramas as cameos.
Why would you give up an 8 figure pay to stay at TVB?!
