Russell Wong Stars in HBO’s “Westworld”

In an effort to reach a wider demographic, Hollywood studios have been casting more Asian actors in recent years. Daniel Wu (吳彥祖) was successful in his attempt to break into Hollywood and landed  leading roles in AMC’s television series Into the Badlands and the film Tomb Raider. Other prominent roles include Collin Chou (‎鄒兆龍) in Netflix’s The Half of It, Anthony Wong (黃秋生) in British drama Strangers, and Russell Wong (王盛德) in HBO’s Westworld.

Westworld is a popular show about a dystopian world exploring the relations between robots and humans. The series features “Westworld,” a Wild West themed amusement park where guests are able to indulge in their wildest and often most twisted fantasies without fear of retaliation or retribution.

Russell Wong stars as Brompton, a management member of the company Delos which owns the Westworld amusement park. He is the right-hand man of Charlotte (played by Tessa Thompson), the executive director of the park. He has many scenes but unfortunately is shot dead in the seventh episode of the new season.

Despite his white hair, Russell still looks much younger than his actual age of 57. He hasn’t aged much and his suits showed off his trim figure. Many netizens praised him for being more handsome than his younger brother Michael Wong (王敏德)!

Hollywood Presence

Born in New York, Russell learned dance, kung fu, and taekwondo as a child. He made his debut in the United States through a music video, and later went to Hong Kong in 1985, where he quickly shot to fame due to his handsome features and fit physique. He partook in the movie The Musical Singer <歌舞昇平> alongside James Wong (黃霑), Anita Mui (梅艷芳), and Roy Chiao (喬宏).

Later, Russell returned to the United States and made a name for himself after starring in The Joy Luck Club in 1993. He also starred in Romeo Must Die alongside Jet Li (李連杰) in 2000.  He joined Jet Li and Michelle Yeoh (楊紫瓊) in The Mummy: Tomb of The Dragon Emperor in 2003. Westworld is Russell’s first project since 2010, when he joined forces with Maggie Q in the television series Nikita.

Russell was also known for his relationship with actress and ballet dancer Flora Cheong (張天愛). They were married in 2003 but unfortunately their relationship came to an end nine years later. In an interview last year, Flora expressed that she still loves Russell and has no plans to ever get married again.
