Sammy Sum Signs With EEG

A “Triple Threat” in the industry with works in music, television, and film, Sammy Sum (沈震軒) is grateful to have been given so many opportunities in the last decade. Sammy expressed that he will be focusing his efforts in the film industry after signing with Emperor Entertainment Group (EEG).

Don’t Fear the Past

Graduating from TVB’s artiste training class, Sammy spent a number of years with the station before pursuing a different route. Although he had memorable supporting roles in the past, one of Sammy’s most notorious performances was in 2012’s Lan Kwai Fong 2 <喜愛夜蒲2> where he played a flirtatious playboy. While TVB executive Catherine Tsang (曾勵珍) advised Sammy against taking such a role as it may damage to his reputation, the actor took the risk in hopes of gaining the experience. Luckily, his persistence earned him a nomination in the 32^nd Hong Kong Film Awards for Best New Performer.

As expected, the playboy image stuck with Sammy throughout the years, leading many viewers to think of the actor as the untrustworthy player type. Despite this, Sammy does not regret playing the controversial character as it remains one of his most memorable roles to-date.

Filming mainly in China in recent years, he expressed, “I’ve filmed costume dramas in China and elsewhere— I have to say it’s a lot more natural to speak in Mandarin [instead of Cantonese].” He added, “It’s very noticeable especially when you’re using Cantonese to express more vulgar lines. For example, saying ‘Get out,’ in Cantonese sounds very unnatural whereas the phrase flows a lot nicer in Mandarin.”

Filming The Queen <封神：妲己> with Gillian Chung (鍾欣潼) recently, he got to know EEG personnel better which ultimately led to his new talent management contract. As the company is a prominent producer of notable major films, Sammy will be focusing his career on the movie industry.

Grateful for Girlfriend’s Support

In a stable relationship with actress Shirley Chan (陳欣妍), Sammy is grateful for her unconditional support over the last five years. As Shirley is a very cheerful person, Sammy has learned to let go of non-important matters due to her influence.

While there are minor arguments that arise from time to time, Sammy explained, “There have been small disagreements, but we never let the problem sit overnight – they’re usually resolved very quickly as we openly discuss these issues. For example, I don’t have a lot of fashion sense, so she would give me some tips.”

When Sammy posted a photo of  Shirley and himself on Instagram, fans interpreted the gesture as an engagement announcement. Sammy laughed and explained that he accidentally misled his fans due to his infrequency of posting on social media. However, he acknowledged Shirley’s importance to him, “It’s great knowing there’s someone beside you who can cheer you on and have a conversation with.”
