Selina Reflects On Burn Incident: “It Changed My Life”
Life appeared perfect for Selina Jen (任家萱), who debuted as a member of S.H.E 18 years ago. As one of Asia’s top girl groups from the very beginning, Selina and her bandmates had always been very popular. The YouTuber Li Ke Tai Tai (理科太太) told the S.H.E singer that all of the male students in her high school class had crushes on Selina.
The 37-year-old singer shared with Li Ke Tai Tai that her first brush with puppy love happened when she was still in elementary school. She received flowers from a male classmate, but her father did not allow them to actually date. But despite their strict approach, Selina’s parents had always been supportive of her career.
Selina faced her biggest life challenge in October 2010, when she sustained severe third-degree burns after an explosive accident that occurred on the set of the television drama I Have a Date with Spring <我和春天有個約會>. She suffered burns on more than 54% of her body and had to undergo skin grafting treatment.
“Fortunately when this incident occurred I was already mature,” said Selina. “I was 29 years old at the time. I felt like, at that time, whether it’s my body or mind, I’ve already matured. If I was someone who was still very young and growing, a time when I was still trying to figure out who I was, I wouldn’t know how much more I would have to suffer in this world.”
Selina admitted the burn incident had completely changed how she viewed her life. “I have to tell myself to face any challenge with a logical and positive manner. It’s okay! You’re still well, and you’re still living. Stop comparing yourself to those who have it better than you. Compare yourself to those that don’t, because that’ll make you realize how lucky you actually are. Of course, we shouldn’t be comparing at all.”
Sometimes these changes turned for the worst. Recovery is a long process, and although Selina appears strong and positive in front of others, that is not always the case. “I realized that I’ve lost the romantic side of me,” she said. “I’ve been trying to search for why, but now I’ve come to see that after the incident, I’ve kept that little princess and romantic side of me well hidden. But after last year, I really want to bring her out. I’m in the process of getting to know myself once again.”
In April 2016, Selina and her husband divorced after a five year marriage. Selina said that she is now ready to meet new people. “My ideal type will be Mr. Lai Le Tai Tai!” she said. The YouTuber joked, “I’ll go and tell my high school classmates that my husband is now Selina’s ideal type.”
