Sheren Tang Learns to Back Away from Perfection
Sheren Tang’s (鄧萃雯) popularity soared after the broadcast of War and Beauty <金枝慾孽> back in 2004. Her role as the powerful Yu Fei soon became a classic. After nine years, it is understandable that the audience would have their hopes up for the sequel. Unfortunately, Beauty at War <金枝慾孽貳> proved to be the complete opposite from its first installment with ratings plummeting down to an all-time low of 19 points.
As the lead in both installments, Sheren admitted she felt great pressure and was often frightened and anxious trying to live up to everyone’s expectations. “For the first installment, we already filmed until 3 or 4 a.m. in the morning. This time, it was even worse. Filming lasted till 5 or 6 a.m. But that didn’t mean it was time to rest. We had to start memorizing the rough drafts of scripts. After working like that for 3 to 4 months, I realized I started to experience panic and anxiety, which greatly affected my performance.”
For War and Beauty, the cast shot scenes in Wing Sau Gong for one week straight. Sheren said, “Each day, we had to memorize over 50 pages of lines. When everyone believed that Sheren Tang could make it through, I broke down on the third day. I cried until I collapsed in the filming room. Everyone on set stared at me blankly. It wasn’t until then that they knew I couldn’t handle it, and believed I’m just a normal person. I’m a person too, so why must I be able to do something that others aren’t able to? Is it because I’m older and have more experience?”
Sheren continued, “Before I cried, I couldn’t even look at Bowie Lam (林保怡) in the eye, because I was diffident. I was afraid that he would find out I had forgotten the lines. In the drama, Yu Fei is very tough, but Sheren Tang is weak. I would be giggling every time I happened to remember the script at work. So for the first installment, I would only give myself 50 percent.”
Nowadays, Sheren expressed she has learned to take things easily and lower her own expectations. In the past, she was serious about everything and strived for 100 percent. As a child, Sheren was abandoned by her parents and had to depend on herself. This was how her perfectionism may have originated. “Aiming for perfection is too tedious, which is why I need to seriously handle this and drop the idea.”
With many TVB artists heading to mainland China to dig for gold, Sheren admitted she would be very poor without the mainland market. She is not very efficient with investing and has managed to secure a house and car with the help of her uncle who works in real estate.
The only thing Sheren lacks at the moment is a romantic partner. She said, “My friends constantly introduce me to men. Once, my friend sat me down for a dinner. But in the end, the man and I didn’t speak a single word. When you find out beforehand that it is a set-up date, you’ll become more resistant.”
Sheren revealed that aside from work, she does not like to talk much or greet many people. In her spare time, she prefers to accompany her family members. Sheren cherishes these moments since she did not live with her parents as a child.

I think I have read similar news in this site about Sheren Teng. Why not dedicate more time to other artistes for a bit of variety and reduce the repetition unless something new?
Agree. Similar contents were reported about Sheren Tang in the last two weeks. I love reading something new about Sheren, but not the same contents.
In 2014, Sheren should only memorize 80% of her lines.
Seriously, I think in this kind of situation affecting Sheren, she needs to consult a psychiatrist. However, she seems to know her problem and that’s important. I wonder why she didn’t realize it sooner until War and Beauty.
Wow, Sheren is abosolutely gorrrgeous in that pic. Props to her for getting through those hard times.
*absolutely
she should just stick to the mainland jobs
Even though there are a lot of bad news about ST I think she is still OK; I have recently seen her appears in two events one on May 20 and one on May 25 in Chinese. She looks very pretty and happy so fans should not worry much about her.
She is still in high demand.
she still need to learn to relax
I think she handle criticism much better than Wayne Lai
Agree. If Wayne Lai feels a lot of pressure because of low rating and criticism then his acting skill will be affected badly. to be able to do well for the next series Wayne Lai must learn how to let go the tress caused by criticism.
I mean the stress not “tress”
Reason:
Sheren Tang acts better than Wayne Lai, and her expectations are much higher. She cares more about her own performance than the TVB’s viewerhsip ratings. Sheren has been a lst line actress for a longer time.
Well I think Wayne handle his problem pretty well. and I disagree what @sandcherry said. Wayne also cares about his performance and not about the ratings. Wayne is an easy- going person, who can accept criticism as well. They both handled their situation very well, and handled it differently. Sheren got more negative news is because she is a straightforward person and her words are to the point, which makes tvb upset. As wayne says it more smooth and evasive, not upsetting any parties. And it does not matter of being a first line actress for a longer time, it doesn’t even matter.
It is because of the terrible script, not Wayne’s acting. Sheren is good too, but she should also need to learn how to relax and be calm
I must say Wayne walks the tight rope really well. He’s a loyal/obedient TVB employee, but at the same time he defended Sheren (in the recent drama over BAW), and always manages to phrase his comments in a way that doesn’t offend either side.
Then why so many negative news of Sheren???
(I am still on Sheren’s side).
Wayne also handled his criticism pretty well too.
This news does seem redundant and also, there is no such thing as perfect. Therefore, I hope that everyone realizes that so that they don’t put too much pressure on themselves to try to be perfect because in the end, no one and nothing is perfect.
Wayne should not be pressured by TV King status because it is an award giving each year for only one series such as WL got TV King for the leading role in the “the confident” only not for all series he has played; TV king this year does not mean he has to be always good as TV King because no one is able to do that.
