Shirley Yeung Seeks Opportunities in Mainland China

Shirley Yeung (楊思琦) took a bold step when she decided to end her contract with TVB after working as a managed artiste for the past thirteen years. While many fans expressed concern over her future in the industry, the 35-year-old is confident that better opportunities are coming her way.

Although she has never achieved first-line status during her years at TVB, Shirley enjoyed a relatively stable career and a steady stream of income. Unfortunately, her messy relationships with Gregory Lee (李泳豪) and Andy Ng (吳帥) tarnished her good-girl image and nearly destroyed all that she has worked so hard for. It seems that Shirley has been put permanently on the back burner; since returning to work after giving birth in 2012, the actress served mainly as a variety program host and was assigned to act in minor roles in only two series, ICAC Investigators 2014 <廉政行動2014> and the upcoming All That Is Bitter Is Sweet <大藥坊>.

Frustrated with the lack of opportunities and worried about supporting her daughter, Shirley recently announced that she has parted ways with TVB so that she may cast a wider net in her search for more lucrative job offers. Perhaps her intuition was right; since leaving the company, Shirley has been contacted by several interested parties, including Hong Kong’s i-Cable. She has also won a role in the upcoming horror comedy film The Bat Night <午夜蝙蝠>, starring alongside respected veterans Leung Siu Lung (梁小龍), Yuen Wah (元華), and Cheng Pei-Pei (鄭佩佩).

Like other artistes who are eyeing the rapidly growing China market, Shirley hopes make a living by filming Mainland dramas. Even though some feel that she has given up on TVB a bit too soon, Shirley believes that she has absolutely no regrets about her decision. “Many Mainland agents have contacted me and have asked about my plans, so I feel that leaving TVB was the right choice. I have not been able to act in dramas in the past few years. I want to look for opportunities in the Mainland so that I can continue to improve.”

Wanting to secure income, Shirley has been spreading word that she is open to trying different genres of work as long as it fits her skills and interests. She would also consider participating in variety and reality competition programs that are currently popular with the Mainland audience. Fluent in Mandarin and already has an established fan base in China, Shirley’s future will hopefully not be as bleak as some have predicted.

  1. That means i should quit my current secure job and pursue my dream career which i might not have a stable income. — i guess you never know until you try —

  2. she is more beautiful and attractive compared to many mainland actresses and even HK fadan.

    1. I guess you gave not seen many of the actresses from China. She cannot compare to many of them in looks or talent.

      1. but Shirley is all natural compared to many of the china stars. plus Shirley looks

      2. Hi HeTieShou, I agree that Shirley is not that pretty but she has that “baby face” I’ve not watched any productions from China. But I think I can imagine a country with such population wont have any difficulty to look for the best talent with good looks (even if it’s plastic).

      3. Remember that Shirley is Miss HK Winner 2001 so that she is for sure prettier than many Mainland actresses. In HK, she is more beautiful than CS, KS,TY.. they all are HK fadans.

      4. Shirley is pretty, her dimples make her more cute, but watching mainland series, there so many women that she can’t compared with, even the supporting actress can outshine her beauty, but then again beauty is subjective. She would have to be a very strong actress, which I don’t see she is. Who knows she might be lucky!

      5. There are a number of China stars that are natural too. Did you guys see Shirley without make up? She honestly does not look so great, but of course that would apply to all other actresses too. But Kate for example looks decent without make up, however, Shirley looks like a different person. Anyways it is more than looks so lets hope she gets lucky.

      6. Sorry but just because she was a former Ms Hk means nothing. Many Ms Hks are not even pretty. Kate was a former ms Hk too but so what? Looks are subjective anyways. But I wish Shirlrey the best and hope she will be successful so she can have a stable income to support her parents and raise her daughter.

      7. “Kate was a former ms Hk too but so what?”

Not a good example. Kate is beautiful. 🙂

      8. Remove Kate’s layers of make up and tarantula lashes and we’ll see if she’s still beautiful. Saw her old pics minus her lashes and heavy make up, she looks really plain. Wasn’t she one of the Ms HK who was described as a “pork chop” too?

      9. “Remove Kate’s layers of make up and tarantula lashes and we’ll see if she’s still beautiful. “

I actually prefers Kate’s look before she starts putting those heavy make up and fake lashes.

So, yeah, to me, she will still be beautiful without the makeup and lashes. 😀

      10. Yeah sure. If only more people were like you to be able to see beyond the layers of goo.

    2. I agree with you 100%; I did watch many Mainland series and I saw a lot of Chinese’s actresses who are not beautiful as Shirley Yeung.

      1. I do not agree with you. I watched many HK series and I saw a lot of HK actresses who are not beautiful as any Chinese stars.

You just have to take your pick of any China actresses and they easily win hands down over the Hongkong artistes.

      2. She looks like a combo of mainland actresses Tang Yan and Huo Siyan.

    3. Miss HK Winner 2001, so what?

All the Miss HK do not rate as pretty as most mainland actress. The pageant produces mostly sub-standard looks.

  3. Good luck..she needs it…..chicklet voice & horrible acting 😡

    1. Yea,she does need it because the competition in China is way more fierce.

      1. China is too big and has thousands movies and TV producers so that the chance for getting jobs there is very high. Competition in HK is more fierce because it just has only TVB.

      2. That is not really true because even though there are a lot more companies and all, there are also a lot of young and talented celebs to fill those spaces. Let’s be real here, can Shirley truly fare against those younger, prettier and more talented actresses?unless she honestly has a lot of luck and connections because she seriously lacks the talent while looks are not her strongest point either.

  4. “Fluent in Mandarin and already has an established fan base in China”

    This helps a lot.

Great photos of Shirley up there. Love to see her smile again.

  5. I didn’t know she’s fluent in Mandarin. That should help.

  6. i didn’t know she’s fluent in mandarin but they will still going to dub her voice

    1. I also did not know she was fluent in Mandarin but yea, even stars from China get dubbed so of course she will be.

  7. So proud of her. She made the right choice. Wish her career is successful in Mainland China. I wish to see her work with her former TVB co-stars Hawick Lau, Michelle Ye, Samuel Chan, Bernice Liu, Annie Man & Benny Chan.

  8. She always seem to be so humble. Whenever people call her si kei cheh (big sister si kei), she said si kei mui (young sister si kei)

    1. “si kei jeh” belongs to Louise Lee Sze Kee, so Shirley cannot be called “si kee jeh” among her colleagues. It shows disrespect to Louise Le.

  9. Not a big fan of her, but I give her props for leaving! So many people would rather be unhappy and get treated like garbage in a place they aren’t going anywhere at. At least she is trying and refuse to not get swift aside. Good luck to her.

  10. Good luck to Shirley!! I admire her decision to be a single mom even knowing such a decision can be detrimental to her career. Hope she has lots of good opportunities in China so she can make a lot of money so her daughter can have a good life.

  11. Hopefully she will get the opportunity to start afresh in Mainland China. I

p.s. What’s all these comparison? Suddenly comments saying like she’s the prettiest & best actress that left TVB >_>

  12. She has a baby face! :3 I’ve always liked watching her dramas.. Good luck to her! (:

  13. She won’t find much success there. She was never extremely popular in Hk plus she’s not classically beautiful as well. Her baby face is not really an asset. The only thing is that she speaks mandarin pretty well but that doesn’t affect anything. If knowing how to speak Mandarin was impt then Koreans wouldn’t be casted at all. I think she should consider a career outside of showbiz.

    1. True about the mandarin speaking part since they are all going to be dubbed anyways. She may succeed due to connections and all. But yea,if it eventually does not work out, then she should try a career outside of showbiz.

  14. hi there

    1. chin up, Shirley.
    2. courageous and determined too.
    3. when there is a will there are always ways making things to happen.
    4. 5 thumbs up, gal.
    5. btw, all miss hk are beautiful.

  15. Shirley is too old to make it big anywhere, HK or China. She’s not a ravishing beauty nor is she talented in the acting/singing dept; in fact she’s a mediocre actress. If she’s lucky, she may meet a good man who’s willing to take care of her and her daughter. Sorry if it sounds cruel but it’s the ugly truth.
