Shirley Yeung Turns to Theater to Earn Milk Money

Since Shirley Yeung (楊思琦) gave birth secretly in the United States in February 2013, she has been working very hard to provide for her daughter, Krystal. As a single mother, Shirley had to pay the mortgage of her house. Besides hosting a food variety show and performing in concerts, Shirley is also appearing in theater plays.

The former Miss Hong Kong has now officially changed her status to that of a doting mother. After filming for the food variety programm, Cook Away Lady May <May姐有請> in Macau, Shirley appeared in a real estate company’s promotional event at Zhongshan. The moment she got back to Hong Kong in early May, she had to rehearse every day for Landscape Encounter <山水又相逢>, a musical play where Shirley will sing and dance.

Landscape Encounter tells the story of how two good friends, played by Shirley and Ursele Wong (黃宇詩) became love rivals. Shirley elaborated, “We will act as our character from 16 to 60 years old. Alternating between the young and old characters on stage, we hardly have time to rest!”

Following that, Shirley will also appear in the play, Carmen <卡門> where she will have to appear on stage in a swimsuit. However, clothing circa the 1800s should rather be conservative, so Shirley has no fear of revealing too much. In Carmen, Shirley will also take on the role of a male. She said, “It’s very difficult to make my voice sound like a man. After practicing for a few weeks, my throat is already sore and I have to bring lozenges and flasks of warm water with me.” For fear of incurring knee injuries, Shirley also has to wear knee braces to protect herself.

No Time for Daughter

In spite of the hard work, the physical torments are nothing compared to Shirley’s yearning to see her daughter. Working from dawn until the late hours of the night, Shirley often returns home to find her daughter asleep. Shirley usually has to leave the house before Krystal wakes up.

Even on Mother’s Day, Shirley had to celebrate it on stage. Despite the hardships, Shirley feels that she can gain much knowledge. “I get to learn a lot on stage. It can also help with my acting. I hope the producers in TVB do not forget me and can help me earn more milk money!”

  1. It’s not easy being a single parent no.

  2. I admire you. You are doing the right thing. Don’t give up.

  3. Actually, I think Shirley Yeung may suit better for theater since she is loud when she recites her lines and her exaggerated facial expressions can really get across the entire audience. While, the television may be too small for her to act in her method of acting. I admire Shirley Yeung too! Stay positive!

  4. I really admire Shirley’s courage in being a single parent. It’s not easy, definitely. I’d really like to see her in TVB dramas again.

  5. It is really hard to be a single parent so I admire Shirley for her hard work. But she is at least lucky to have her parents’ support and help. There are many others out there that don’t have that at all.

  6. Has she even been filming TVB dramas? Wonder why producers don’t give her any roles.

  7. Theatre can’t pay her that well! But I suppose a bit of hardship may actually turn her into a more convincing actress.

  8. I really hope the media gives her break … hard enough to be going at this solo.

TVB may be hesitant to give her roles since they are afraid the audience may not like her. Hopefully she’ll slowly build her image and get back on-screen. Not a particular fan of hers but she beats a lot of other can’t speak cantonese actresses.

  9. Very glad for Shirley Yeung. Don’t give up easily. Stay strong!

  10. This is what frustrates me about HK. So she had a child, so what? What does that have to do with her acting? Why does she have to build her image? There’s is absolutely nothing wrong with her image. HK audience are just stupid.

    1. HK audience aren’t stupid … they are just gullible. TVB management, other entertainment companies and paparazzi team up to build and tarnish artist’s reputation.

The industry will never do well if they keep playing that favoritism card instead of recognizing true talent.

      1. Well said my friend! Well said!
Stay strong Shirley! Hope some day your hard work will pay off!

      2. Totally agree. Shirley was not too bad in her acting. She just joined TVB at the wrong time when TVB had so many good and solid actresses, such as Gigi Lai, Ada Choi, Kenix Kwok, Esther Kwan, Jessica Husan. Flora Chan, Charmaine Sheh, etc.

I don’t think TVB should have frozen her after she dated Gregory Lee and then abandoned her almost completely after she became a single mother. Those were her personal life, and there was nothing to do with her acting ability. Shirley was a bit stupid to put her love life first, which was not accepted by TVB some years ago.

      3. Shirley was actually REALLY popular early on in her career. Like TVB promoted her A LOT. She was in numerous leading roles. She was like the original Linda Chung-wholesome, cute etc. But when Linda, Fala, Kate and all these other pageant beauties came along, who were all younger and prettier than her, she got pushed to the sideline and her career stalled. Her last leading role was like 2006, The Price of Greed. Blame it on bad timing, she just could never climb her way back to the top.

    2. Nothing wrong with having a child. Something wrong with going on tv saying she is not pregnant and lying about it. Then hiding in USA to have a child and not admitting till the papparazzi posted pictures of her. If she just admit to having a kid nobody blames her, not many will care.

  11. I think the problem is that in a society like Hong Kong, people have very conservative views when it comes to relationships and bringing children into the world.

Most people in HK think that being an unwed single mother is taboo. I abide with that, since it’s not really the best thing for the child especially later on in the child’s life, they need both parents in order to foster a mentally and emotionally healthy child as they do crave for stability. I’m not asking the parents to be back together again for the long haul, but they have to place all their issues and resentments aside for the sake of the children that they bring into the world.

  12. i could never understand why she did what she did…it’s just leaving one loser for another. and to make it worst..end up being a single mother..it’s bad enough struggling to feed oneself, whatmore with a child.

    1. She hastily dumped Gregory for that diver thinking she’s gonna do a Gigi Lai, Cathy Tsui. That guy turned out to be fraud and got knocked up in the process. Maybe she wanted an abortion but that will make her look even worse. If she suffered allegedly suffered from post natal depression, well we can all see why.

  13. I think Krystal was born 8th March 2012, not Feb 2013?

  14. No one can understand what she did but there’s not wrong with being a single mother! It might be exactly what she is looking for since her so call bfs were never able to take care of her. Why not just have a child on her own and raise it herself? I applaud her for her courage in having the child and I hope she won’t have any trouble raising her little one.
