“Shock Wave” and “The White Storm” Sequels

Next year, Hong Kong theaters will see the sequels to box office hits, Shock Wave <拆彈專家> and The White Storm <掃毒>.

Starring Andy Lau (劉德華), Shock Wave was released to critical reception in 2017. With its exciting storyline and well-rounded cast, the film and its actors are nominated for several categories in the upcoming 37th Hong Kong Film Awards. Andy will be returning to the big screen for the new film, which is slated to begin filming in 2019. Though it was a box office hit, fans were skeptical about a sequel because Andy’s character in the first movie had sacrificed himself and died. In response, director Herman Yau (邱禮濤) explained, “There will be new characters and a new storyline. The movie will not be a continuation of the first one, but the theme will be the same.”

Another hit film to produce a sequel is 2013’s The White Storm, which starred Sean Lau (劉青雲), Louis Koo (古天樂), and Nick Cheung (張家輝). The trio’s onscreen chemistry and brotherhood left a deep impression on the audience and also received positive reception, prompting a sequel. After confirming and accommodating the schedules of the three lead actors, filming is set to begin in the summer of this year. As with Shock Wave, this sequel will not be a continuation of its original movie. While the subject remains the same, the storyline will be different.

  1. I didn’t enjoy Shock Wave much and as usual Andy’s character in the movie was full-on central focus without the need of supporting actors/actresses. The only actor given anything to work with was Philip Keung and even that was very limited. Ron’s role could have been given to literally anybody with the same results. The demand of viewers might be to watch scene after scene of Andy Lau but I prefer more balanced movies with plenty of roles allowing character development and support actors/actresses to shine. Apart from for the opportunity to meet him, I don’t think there is any value for an ambitious actor to participate in any Andy’s movies…..
