Shu Qi to Direct New Film Starring Roy Chiu?
Best Actress Shu Qi (舒淇) may be taking a new career direction. The 50-year-old actress is said to be directing a new film starring award-winning actor Roy Chiu (邱澤) and Taiwanese singer-songwriter 9m88 in lead roles. Shu Qi will also take on a supporting role in front of the camera. The film is set to start filming this month, as Shu Qi is already in Taiwan awaiting filming commencement.
Shu Qi’s transition into directing does not come as a surprise. Last year, she was invited to serve as a judge and member of the international jury at the 80th Venice Film Festival. Previously, she served as a judge for both the Cannes Film Festival and Berlin Film Festival. She was the first Taiwanese actress to serve as a judge for three major European film festivals. In June this year, the American Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced Shu Qi as a qualified Oscar judge.
In recent years, Shu Qi reduced her filming output due to relentless and recurring skin allergies. Although she has several upcoming projects, Shu Qi may be trying out different avenues of work in the entertainment industry.
While rumors of Shu Qi’s directorial debut has not been confirmed, fans caught onto snippets of her social media posts which show she may be in Taiwan preparing for pre-production. She was seen to be working on a computer often.
