Song Joong Ki to Host MAMAs for the Fourth Time
The 2020 Mnet Asian Music Awards (better known as the MAMAs) will be held in Seoul for the first time since 2009.
The K-Pop music ceremony will be hosted by Korean actor Song Joong Ki, who has hosted the show three times since 2012. The 2020 ceremony will be his fourth.
Scheduled to be held on December 6, the awards ceremony will reportedly include K-Pop stars such as BTS, TWICE, Seventeen, IZ*ONE, Monsta X, and NCT, competing for the big three Grand Prizes (known in Korean as “daesang”), which include Artist of the Year, Album of the Year, and Song of the Year.
Previously known as the Mnet Video Music Awards, the first MAMA was held in 1999 at the Universal Arts Center. The awards ceremony had two grand prizes: Best Popular Music Video and Music Video of the Year. In 2004, it was rebranded to the Mnet KM Music Festival (MKMF). It wasn’t until 2009 when it was renamed to the MAMAs to expand the ceremony’s global reach. 2009 was also the last year in which the MAMAs were held in South Korea.
