“Stars Academy” Will Take on a Reality Show Format
TVB invested 30 million Hong Kong dollars into the new music reality show Stars Academy <聲夢傳奇> in hopes of finding the next big singer. However, there were rumors that the show could be cut due to the change in upper management. Nevertheless, TVB dismantled those speculations stating that Stars Academy will now be following a reality show format starting on April 3.
With Wong Cho Lam (王祖藍) returning to TVB as Chief Creative Officer, he hopes to elevate the singing competition format. He has even invited three superstar singers to judge the competition. The 15 contestants have already had a meeting with Cho Lam, Eric Tsang (曾志偉), and Voice Entertainment CEO Ho Lai Chuen (何麗全) as they prepare for the competition.
The contestants have been separated by genders into two groups. The men will be singing Beyond’s iconic song “Loving You” <喜歡你>, while the women will be tackling Joey Yung’s (容祖兒) “Number 16 Lover” <16號愛人>.
Gigi (炎明熹), who has been labelled as the youthful version of G.E.M., performed remarkably, gaining a lot of attention and applause. In the past, Gigi showed signs of nervousness in her performance to which she shared that her palms usually sweat as a result. “When the show was put on hold, we had to deal with the situation calmly. Even though it is a reality show now, we can handle it.”
As for Stars Academy’s three youngest members Chantel (姚焯菲), Windy (詹天文), and Linda Chung’s (鍾嘉欣) look-alike, Yumi (鍾柔美), they also performed well in rehearsals despite their young age. Being one of the oldest in the competition, 23-year-old Sherman (潘靜文) shared her excitement for having celebrity judges join the show. “I am the oldest in my group, so I really cherish every opportunity. Eric told us that we shouldn’t focus on winning, and instead on the friendships we have developed.”
Aska (張馳豪) and Ruco Chan’s (陳展鵬) look-alike, Hugo Wong (黃奕斌) are also thrilled to meet these star judges. If they could choose, they hope that they can collaborate with Eason Chan (陳奕迅) and Hins Cheung (張敬軒) one day.
Recognized as being one of the hot favorites this year, Hugo laughed and said, “Really? I really love being in front of the camera because I have learned acting before. I like to notice how people move around me, and sometimes I will even watch and follow people on the streets.” When asked if he follows pretty girls, he said, “No, I like to follow people with a lot of life experience. It is very helpful for my acting and singing.”
