Steven Ma Remembers Late Mother at Gospel Concert

Steven Ma (馬浚偉) held his Music Sharing Concert <情凝音樂分享會> on July 13 and 14 to raise funds for Christian gospel group The Bridge Music Ministry, or TBM. At the concerts, Steven teared up several times as he recalled his mother’s last moments. Known as a filial son, Steven hopes to use the concerts as an opportunity to spread his filial spirit, and urges everyone to take a more active role in caring for their parents.

The concerts took place at the Kowloonbay International Trade & Exhibition Centre over the weekend and were quickly sold out. Many friends from the entertainment industry were present, including TVB executive Catherine Tsang (曾勵珍), director Leung Choi Yuen (梁材遠), and actress Helen Ma (馬海倫).

Steven sang tracks from his latest gospel album Cherish, and reportedly agreed to perform for free to support TBM’s mission of bringing Christian values to schools throughout Hong Kong. Steven had been diligently rehearsing for these performances despite the nose fractures sustained earlier while filming his upcoming period drama Property Protector <守業者>. Although he was worried that the injuries could affect his ability to perform, Steven seemed to have made a speedy recovery and displayed high energy throughout the shows.

Steven has always been vocal about his love towards his late mother, who passed away in 1999 after losing a 22-year battle with nasopharyngeal carcinoma, cancer originating from an area behind the nasal passages. Steven spoke about his mother fondly during many public interviews, citing her as a role model and a source of strength. He also wrote a song for his mother, and released it as a lead single for his new album. The song, titled “For Mother: Weary” <給媽媽的倦>, is a reference to singer Deanie Ip’s (葉德嫻) song “Weary” <倦>, and was Mrs. Ma’s favorite. Despite losing her hearing, Mrs. Ma continued to play her favorite song to accompany her during her last days.

At the concerts, Steven spoke once again about Mrs. Ma, and shared his experiences during the end of his mother’s life. He became emotional several times and visibly teared up. Many in the audience was greatly affected by the sentiments and shed tears as well. At a post-concert interview, Steven recalled the touching moment, and revealed that his father was also in the audience. Steven added that he tried hard to avoid his father’s gaze while on stage because he was worried about breaking down and affecting the performance.
