Steven Ma to Release Ten Movies in Five Years
Steven Ma (馬浚偉) has invested over HK$10 million in a new strategic project that aims to release ten films in the next five years.
On January 15th, Steven’s production studio Little Horse Workshop officially announced its collaboration with four other movie studios in a strategic partnership that will have ten movies released in five years. Steven and representatives from the four other movie studios held a contract signing ceremony that day.
The reps announced that they will be producing six “social welfare” films and four commercial films in the next five years. In April, they will start principal photography for their first film, which is about the story of an individual with hearing impairment.
Steven will act as screenwriter, director, and play the lead role of a deaf man. “I will not be taking part in all those roles in future films. Eventually, I will pass it on to other people, and be taking part in only one of those roles. However, I will definitely continue my participation in the creative writing processes of our movies.”
The former TVB actor will not be paid for this first film. “I didn’t get any money from my last movie either. I will do more shows and make more appearances to earn that money back. A small investment does not mean a film cannot be made. Keep the work coming so more people can have jobs.”
Asking if he plans on selling property to maintain his investments, like what Dayo Wong (黃子華) did for his new film, Steven said, “There is no need to do that at the moment. I’ve saved enough for now.”
Steven plans on casting newcomers for his films. “I feel that people who are known, like me, will be able to find work somewhere. It’s hard for rookies or students who have just graduated from performing arts colleges to do that. I would love to use rookies, because one, they won’t be demanding in their pay, and two, new faces are very suitable for the kind of films we’re doing. If you use well-known celebrities, it loses the authenticity.”
However, when it comes to casting actors for their commercial films, Steven has a few tricks up his sleeve.
“I’ve already rolled all my friendship cards. I’ve been contacting Linda Chung (鍾嘉欣), Fala Chen (陳法拉), Tavia Yeung (楊怡), and Kent Cheng (鄭則仕).”
