Sun Li and Myolie Wu Face Off in “A Better Life”

Inspirational modern drama A Better Life <蠻好的人生> reunites China’s queen of television Betty Sun Li (孫儷) and HK actress Myolie Wu (胡杏兒), seven years since they last faced off as rivals in love in the immensely popular costume series Nothing Gold Can Stay <那年花開月正圓> in 2017.

Opens to Positive Reception

Opening to good ratings for its premier episode on April 17, A Better Life also broke 6,500 for its heat index on platforms, the top rated among the urban life dramas category. On Friday, April 18, the drama’s cast members including Sun Li, Myolie, Dong Zijian (董子健) and Gao Xin (高鑫) met fans at a publicity event in Beijing, where they engaged in friendly games and interactions, hyping up the crowd in Shanghainese and Cantonese!

Contributing her vocals for the song “Ke Xi Ai Ren” (literally ‘Pity, lover’) on the drama’s soundtrack, Sun Li revealed that the song lyrics underwent many revisions, partly due to her attachment to the female lead, Hu Man Li – a 39-year-old top insurance agent who is forced to navigate twin crises of losing her marriage and career. “I hoped for the lyrics to be closer to Hu Man Li’s character, the song actually talks about her emotional journey so there were many ornamental lyrics, so we discussed removing them,”

Successfully breaking into the Chinese market, Myolie has been working hard on brushing up her Putonghua, and has also used her real voice in her recent dramas including Nothing Gold Can Stay, Blossoms in Adversity <惜花芷>, and Follow Your Heart <顏心記>, gaining recognition from viewers.

On the challenge of portraying “the other woman” for her supporting role, Qiu Li Su, the actress said, “Actually it’s pretty fun, because this character is very real, and it is also easy to understand the motivations behind her actions, so it felt comfortable for me to give full play to the role,”
