Sunny Chan’s Son is a Talented Pianist

Sunny Chan (陳錦鴻) has stopped working for close to 10 years to support his 17-year-old son Edgar Chan (陳駕樺), who has autism. In 2019, Sunny made a comeback in ViuTV drama Till Death Do Us Part <婚內情>. Recently, Sunny and his wife Ada To (杜雯惠) appeared on Alice Lau’s (劉雅麗) YouTube channel and their son made a surprise appearance where he shared he is about to take part in a piano competition.

Sunny shared how his time away from the limelight has been, “During these 10 years, I’ve been treating my role at home as a character I have to play. Every day, I’m acting. Even if he does something wrong, expresses himself poorly, or doesn’t understand something, I have a lot of patience and a big smile on my face. I do this to keep my emotions in check or I’ll easily allow him to affect my emotions or rest.”

After Edgar watched Bohemian Rhapsody five years ago, he wanted to learn piano. He would play the piano for five to six hours every day. Edgar would soon take the performance level piano exam.

Edgar has grown up quite a bit and is now almost six feet tall. On Alice’s program, Edgar expressed in a mix of Cantonese and English that he would like to perform an original song for everyone. After his performance, Alice praised him and he replied with a nod of his head, “It’s my pleasure, it’s my honor.”

Edgar also shared he typically plays more pop songs and he will soon have a performance at school. Alice urged him for an encore and he played a more elegant sounding piece. Edgar tended to speak in a rushed manner, but he could clearly verbalize his thoughts and answers. Sunny sat on the side proudly and appeared to really enjoy the music.

Sunny shared Edgar will graduate high school a year from now and their goal is for him to attend The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Art’s Music program. Sunny does not expect Edgar to pass the interviews the first time, but will patiently support his son as this is something Edgar wants to do. “I’m happy as long as he can do what he wants to do.”
