Takashi Sorimachi’s “GTO Revival” Receives 9.6% in Ratings

Gaining immense popularity after starring in Great Teacher Onizuka (GTO), Takashi Sorimachi reprises his role as the ex-delinquent teacher in television special, GTO Revival.

Fans of the classic drama will be happy to know that his wife, Nanako Matsushima, also stars in the special reprising her role. The couple met and fell in love while filming the 1998 live-action adaptation of Great Teacher Onizuka. The new special will mark the married couple’s first on-screen collaboration in over two decades.

Broadcast on April 1, GTO Revival received much praise in online discussions. Although ratings did not reach double digits, the 9.6 percent viewership rating became the highest ranked program aired during the same period.

Takashi held a press conference to thank fans for their support. He shared he received photos from friends and family who tuned in to support the project. Although grateful for the opportunity to reprise his role and to work alongside his wife again, Takashi shared that because they did not have many scenes together, the couple often arrived on set and left separately after filming.
