Telford Wong Clarifies Debt Rumors
Telford’s acting chops were recognized with his performance in idol drama Wife Interrupted <救妻同學會> in which he played the character Gino.
TVB actor Telford Wong’s (黃庭鋒) name was spray-painted on TVB City’s outer walls with a debt repayment warning: “Owe debt, pay up”. Earlier in August, the 35-year-old clarified the matter on his social media and denied that he and his family had gambled or owed money, adding that has already filed a police report.
“Regarding the media reports, I’m shocked about my family and I being innocently accused. We were not involved in any debt scandal, and definitely have not gambled or owed money. We hope the police will find out the truth quickly.” Expressing his thanks for the company, he added, “Please do not worry. The innocent need not fear and time will prove everything. Thanks to my company for the trust and my friends for their support. I will continue to focus on doing my work well.”
Many fans left supportive comments and expressed their trust in the actor. A sports enthusiast, Telford was the only Asian soccer player on the school team when he studied in England, and had taken part in many school matches, winning the “Most Valued Soccer Player” award in matches in Argentina and Chile. While he had the chance to go professional in Aston Villa and Wolverhampton Wanderers soccer clubs, he gave up the chance due to intense competition in selection of English soccer players and wanted to focus on his academic exams.
Returning to Hong Kong, he became a physical education teacher before joining Now TV as a sports program host in 2015. He left for TVB the next year to continue hosting similar shows. In December 2017 he signed a management contract with TVB, and got noticed when he beat veteran Liza Wang (汪明荃) to win the top prize worth $510,000 HKD at TVB 2018 Anniversary Gala.
