“The Defected” Star Joman Chiang Became a Stepmother at 21
Known as Hong Kong’s indie film queen, Joman Chiang (蔣祖曼) has always given the impression that she was independent, strong, and unrestrained. But those strengths are actually the byproducts of her greatest weakness—she loves too much.
“I’ve had a pretty miserable love life,” she said. “When I love someone, I’ll give that person everything I have.”
The Defected <鐵探> star shared that when she was 20 years old, she had a boyfriend that loved to gamble. To help pay back his debt, Joman worked as a waitress on the side. It was to the point that Joman even declined acting jobs in order to have time to make quicker money as a waitress.
“After paying it all back, he went to gamble again and borrowed some more money. It was a never ending cycle.”
Interestingly, it wasn’t her boyfriend’s constant debts that made her leave him—it was the fact that he was unfaithful.
“I broke it off as soon as I realized that he was trying to see someone else. It was pretty classic!” she said.
After splitting with her ex, Joman met her husband, Chan Cheuk-kei (陳卓麒), when she was 21 years old. When they met, Chan already has a young son, Day, with his previous wife.
“A lot of people misunderstand me,” she said. “They tell me that I was admirable for taking in a stepson, but in fact, I’ve learned a lot from Day. It is not easy to accept a stepmother in your life, but he has.”
In 2015, Chan and Joman gave Day a younger sister. “Now, we have nine cats, one dog, one bird, and two turtles,” said Joman. “I have no time for myself anymore!”
