Top Contenders for Most Improved Actor Award
With the annual TVB Anniversary Awards <萬千星輝頒獎典禮2020> coming up this Sunday, many are taking their picks for the big winners of the night. In addition to the fierce competition in the Best Actor/Actress and Best Supporting Actor/Actress categories, there is also a swath of artistes vying for the Most Improved Actor/Actress award, which has kick-started many performers’ careers. This year, 11 male artistes received nominations for the Most Improved Actor award. Even though some have more acting experience than others, the race is tough given the variety in productions this year.
Here are three of the top contenders for the Most Improved Actor award:
Mark Ma (馬貫東)
Mark entered the industry in 2006, making this his 14th year with TVB. At first, he played minor roles in a variety of dramas, but his hard work throughout the years finally paid off when he gained recognition for his likable role as “Professor” in the ongoing sitcom Come Home Love: Lo and Behold <愛·回家之開心速遞>.
In 2019, he left the sitcom to pursue meatier roles and landed the opportunity to star in Life After Death <那些我愛過的人> as the husband of Shiga Lin‘s (連詩雅) character. Since viewers praised his incredible portrayal of a doctor with Asperger’s syndrome, that role could very well put him on top this year. Aside from Life After Death, he also participated in Airport Strikers <機場特警>, which aired last May.
Joey Law (羅天宇)
Joey made his debut in the industry through Mr. Hong Kong 2008. With 12 years under his belt, he is also a big contender for the award. Similar to Mark, Joey also played small roles before becoming a household name with his character Leslie Ma in the original Come Home Love <愛·回家> series.
This year, Joey has been nominated for his work in The Exorcist’s 2nd Meter <降魔的2.0> and Hong Kong Love Stories <香港愛情故事>. Despite his lack of screen time in The Exorcist’s 2nd Meter, he gave the audience a fresh performance as the sea monster and Thalassa’s lover.
He continued to impress viewers with his stellar performance in Hong Kong Love Stories, where he played Chi Long. Given the drama’s realistic representation of Hong Kong’s living situation, many were able to relate to Joey’s character as a young man struggling to purchase a home with his girlfriend.
Karl Ting (丁子朗)
Though Karl Ting has only been in the industry for four years, his improvement is evident in the many works he has participated in. Hailing from Canada, Karl began his acting career after winning first runner-up in Mr. Hong Kong 2016. TVB has given the young actor countless opportunities, such as dramas and variety shows, from the very beginning.
Aside from appearing in dramas Another Era <再創世紀> and The Man Who Kills Troubles <解決師>, Karl has also taken part in the travel show Sammy On The Go <森美旅行團>. Since he often appears on-screen, he has become a memorable face for viewers, especially after becoming a hot contender for this award last year.
This year, he is noted for his acting in Legal Mavericks 2020 <踩過界II>, and hosting abilities in Liza’s Online <娛樂大家> and at the annual TVB Anniversary Gala Show <萬千星輝賀台慶>. Often playing a youthful character, Karl was able to show his acting range and impress viewers with his role as a dishonest doctor in Legal Mavericks 2020. Many praised him for his iconic scene with Kelly Cheung (張曦雯), in which they broke into dispute.
Nevertheless, audience members will have to wait until Sunday to find out the results. Who is your choice for Most Improved Actor?

Mark portrayed the character very well. he was convincing as a person with Asperger’s syndrome. Karl is good looking but he is but not ready for the award yet.
Most Improved Actor Award for people over 12 & 14 years? Damn! TVB sure is a depressing place to be. lol haha
Mark Ma for sure. Joey was good in HKLS but not there yet, Karl is too new still.
