With 2013 almost upon us, it is time to look back at the top entertainment news that rocked us this year. A year of sex and relationship scandals filled the news, including TVB artists’ love lives, which caused fans to reel in shock.
Below are the most popular news stories at JayneStars.com this year (measured by the total number of pageviews at our site for a news story arc, which may include multiple articles pertaining to the same topic). Let’s relive some of the most memorable and scandalous moments of 2012 together!
1. Justin Lee Drug Rape Case (712,198 pageviews)
Taiwanese socialite, Justin Lee’s (李宗瑞) drug rape case, blazed headlines across Asia in August. Reported to have a long-time habit of lounging in bars and putting date-rape drugs in the drinks of women that caught his interest, Justin brought them home and secretly filmed their subsequent sexual encounters. Some women appeared to be subconscious, drugged, or visibly struggling against Justin’s sexual advances in the videos.
Among the 50 women in Justin’s exposed sex tapes was girlfriend and Taiwanese actress, Maggie Wu (吳亞馨). Appearing to be a willing sex partner, Maggie was not part of the 10 women that pressed drug rape and unauthorized taping charges against Justin.
As the Justin Lee scandal unfolded, more than 93 of his controversial sex videos were leaked online, after triad and police’s extortion efforts failed. Justin’s actions disgusted many who came across the headlines, and the case raised public awareness over the easy access of certain date rape drugs on the market.
2. Boscolie Breakup (356,157 pageviews)
Chaotic confusion erupted after the tearful breakup announcement from Bosco Wong (黃宗澤) and Myolie Wu (胡杏兒) in July. Both parties remained tight-lipped as to the reason why the 8-year relationship ended, despite Bosco’s declaration that he was willing to wait for Myolie. After Virginia Lok (樂易玲) dropped hints that Bosco failed to give Myolie a sense of security, cheating allegations quickly flew, linking Bosco to past costars, Ada Liu (柳岩), Toby Leung (梁靖琪), and others.
Conflicting reports also arose that it was Myolie falling for Taiwanese costar, Eric Huang (黃少祺), that caused her to break up with Bosco. Myolie said that there was no third party, but refused to elaborate further on the sudden breakup.
Sharing the stage together at the 45th TVB Anniversary Awards, Bosco was photographed looking lingeringly at Myolie, sparking speculations that he hopes for a reconciliation. Will Bosco’s mastery in text messaging be able to turn around the former lovers’ fate in 2013?
3. Hilary Tsui Drug Rumors and Kenny Wee Scandal (158,149 pageviews)
What initially started as rumors over a celebrity drug-taking incident at Kenny Wee’s (黃浩) restaurant quickly escalated to a non-ending barrage of verbal crossfire, in which lawyers and the police were called in.
When Hilary Tsui (徐濠縈), Josie Ho (何超儀), and Sam Lee (李燦琛) were accused of being embroiled in a drug scandal, they quickly held a press statement to clarify the rumors, while striking down Kenny for damaging their reputation.
On behalf of Hilary Tsui, Eric Tsang (曾志偉) reportedly threatened and slapped Kenny in a drunken state at a wedding. Eric was arrested by the police in an ongoing criminal investigation. Oscar Leung’s (梁烈唯) defense of Eric, while calling Kenny for having “persecutory delusions” led to Kenny’s filing of a defamation lawsuit against Oscar. Will Eric face jail time and will Oscar emerge unscathed?
4. Denise Ho, Joey Yung, and Wilfred Lau Love Triangle (150,149 pageviews)
When Wilfred Lau (劉浩龍) announced he is dating Joey Yung (容祖兒), Denise Ho (何韻詩) felt betrayed and hurt. Joey and Denise were rumored to be former lovers, and Denise immediately ended her friendship with Wilfred. As Wilfred was crucified for being an “attention-seeker” by announcing his romance with Joey so publicly, questions about Joey’s bisexuality arose, especially after Denise announced she is a lesbian.
Rumored to have suffered an emotional breakdown, Joey dodged the bisexuality speculations and said that she was truly not unhappy.
5. Gaile Lok and Leon Lai’s Divorce (147,514 pageviews)
Since 2011, Gaile Lok (樂基兒) and Leon Lai’s (黎明) marriage became estranged. It was reported that Leon gave Gaile over $100 million HKD in gifts, in the form of a mansion in San Francisco and a new yacht, without any avail to save their love.
Photos of Gaile in her underwear while sprawled across the bed of her purported New Zealand lover, Cuz, were exposed in October. The same week, Leon and Gaile issued a statement of their separation. Since the divorce, Gaile enjoyed her new found freedom, and was spotted vacationing at various locations across the globe.
6. Hong Kong Actors’ Topless Photos for Lau Ding Sing (143,262 pageviews)
Wealthy gay businessman, Lau Ding Sing (劉定成), was speculated to be the reason the Mr. Hong Kong contest was cancelled this year. An avid photo collector of naked muscular young men for 16 years, Mr. Lau boasted that Him Law (羅仲謙), William Chan (陳偉霆), Benjamin Yuen (袁偉豪), and many former Mr. Hong Kong participants had willingly posed for him in risque photos for vast sums of money.
As the “indecent proposal” was exposed, the Hong Kong media published an extensive list of the involved actors, assuring that the men kept their pants on, posing in either shorts or thongs. Mr. Lau’s comments on the beautiful bodies he had photographed, including Him Law’s small “package”, continued to feed the public frenzy.
Him Law initially denied that he knew Mr. Lau, but his statement was later retracted to specify that Him had never posed in fully nude photos nor he did not participate in any unethical activities. The incident brought to light that handsome male actors were often an object of indecent proposals in the industry.
7. Birth of Andy Lau’s Daughter (138,149 pageviews)
This year, Andy Lau (劉德華) turned 51 years old and became a father. Although numerous celebrities’ babies were born this year, Andy Lau’s “Little Dragon Girl” was the most anticipated. After years of failed attempts, Andy’s wife, Carol Chu (朱丽倩), finally succeeded in becoming pregnant. Worldwide fans awaited with abated breath for the birth of Andy Lau’s daughter, who finally arrived on May 9, 2012.
Days following his daughter’s birth, Andy did not confirm the news publicly, arousing criticism for his extensive sense of privacy. The world still does not know what Andy’s baby looks like, as he only released a photo of his daughter’s hand.
8. Ron Ng and “Miss X” Sex Scandal (87,676 pageviews)
Ron Ng’s (吳卓羲) preference for pink panties emerged in his urgent sex messages to an anonymous woman known as “Miss X,” who spilled her sordid tale to tabloids to punish Ron. Miss X claimed that she has been dating Ron since 2010, who lied to her and said he was not dating Viann Zhang (張馨予). Each time Miss X met with Ron, they would have sex. Tired of a relationship that was not going anywhere, Miss X revealed Ron’s explicit text and audio messages to the press.
Ron allegedly panicked over the sex scandal and begged Miss X to clarify that they only exchanged messages as friends. After Miss X and Viann reportedly spoke on the phone and decided to drop Ron from their hearts for good, Miss X issued a press statement that claimed she was only Ron’s “good friend,” but the statement was laced with sarcasm and Ron’s reputation was already tarnished. Ron’s rumored ex-girlfriend, Ella Koon (官恩娜), also gloated over Ron’s sinful exposure.
9. Ron Ng and Viann Zhang’s Breakup (86,052 pageviews)
Ron Ng (吳卓羲) and Viann Zhang’s (張馨予) dating news made the Top Ten Hong Kong Entertainment News of 2011, and their breakup news is again a big story this year.
Many blamed Viann for dragging down Ron’s TVB career, especially with the fiery flame wars Viann engaged with Ron’s fans. After Viann was upset that Ron refused to acknowledge her publicly as his girlfriend, their turbulent relationship finally came to an end in July. When Viann announced she had dumped him, Ron was confused and reportedly tried to mend their relationship.
Viann alluded that dating Ron was a nightmare, upset at his cheating ways with Miss X. Fans’ reaction to Ron and Viann’s breakup? “Good riddance!”
10. Tavia Yeung and Him Law’s “Car-shaking” Scandal (79,951 pageviews)
Rumored to be dating since filming The Hippocratic Crush <On Call 36小時> last year, Tavia Yeung (楊怡) and Him Law (羅仲謙) regularly praised each other before the press. They were even rumored to have vacationed in South Korea, and Him may have spent extended nights at Tavia’s new home. The layers of their dating relationship were peeled away slowly for all to see….
In September, the shocking image of a drunk Tavia sprawled on Him’s lap emerged. Tabloids alluded that the pair engaged in racy activities inside the car, which angered Tavia. Holding a press conference, Tavia and Him clarified that she had only passed out after downing too much alcohol.
Him’s importance in Tavia’s life subsequently emerged after she called him “the person she trusted the most” and a “good person” that she can share her burdens with.
