TV King Nominees’ Final Words: “Will I Win?”
Who will be crowned as Hong Kong’s TV King of 2012? This year, TVB organized a one-vote-per-person system to select the Best Drama, Best Actor, and Best Actress awards, creating an environment for the audience to actively engage in the selection process.
The 2012 TVB Anniversary Awards will be airing live this Monday at 8 PM on TVB’s Jade, HD Jade, their online channel, myTV. A total of 10 nominees are nominated for TV King, but who will ultimately take the golden trophy home? Here are some of our candidates’ thoughts!
Kenneth Ma (馬國明) – The Hippocratic Crush < On Call 36小時>
Kenneth’s popularity skyrocketed after the broadcast of The Hippocratic Crush, and his same performance won him Best Actor at Malaysia’s My Astro On Demand Favorites Awards earlier this month. Kenneth was once very vocal in expressing the flaws of the one-vote-per-person system, but nonetheless admitted that his confidence strengthened after winning Malaysia’s TV King. However, Kenneth believes that he has a higher chance to win the TVB Favorite Male Character instead.
Kevin Cheng (鄭嘉穎) – Gloves Come Off <拳王>
Kevin Cheng is the biggest breakout Hong Kong television actor of 2011, and the 43-year-old actor had already won three Best Actor awards for his performance in Ghetto Justice <怒火街頭> last year. The two-time TVB Best Actor winner, however, does not have high hopes in winning this year, but expressed that he is still excited to be able to partake in the TV King race this year. “I know I will not be the main character this year,” said Kevin. “But I will support my brothers! To be honest, everyone has a chance this year. Let’s not talk about Wayne Lai; he is always the hot favorite! Also Raymond Lam! But in my biased opinion, I think Kenneth Ma will win! He has been waiting for a drama like The Hippocratic Crush for a long time. Now that he has won Malaysia’s TV King, I think he has an even higher chance to win now!”
Raymond Wong (黃浩然) – Gloves Come Off <拳王>
Raymond Wong was nominated for two awards for two different performances – Best Actor for his performance in Gloves Come Off and My Favorite Male Character for The Confidant. “This year will definitely not be my year,” said Raymond with a smile. “But being nominated for two categories is already a very big encouragement! I will face the awards with an ordinary mindset. What I really want is to see The Confidant win Best Drama!”
Bosco Wong (黃宗澤) – Witness Insecurity <護花危情>
Currently the highest-rated television drama of the year, Bosco’s portrayal of Hui Sir also created early buzz for a possible Best Actor win. Bosco expressed, “I am competing against so many seniors this year. I have no confidence to win [Best Actor].” Instead, Bosco said he hopes to see Witness Insecurity win Best Drama.
Moses Chan (陳豪) – The Last Steep Ascent <天梯>
Like Kevin Cheng, Moses Chan, 2007’s TV King, also believes that he will not be the main focus at this year’s award ceremony. “I do not see awards to be very important,” said Moses. “But I absolutely agree with the one-vote-per-person system. The more participants, the better! I was also very vocal about supporting the telephone voting system in the past.” As for Moses’ favorite candidate to win TV King, Moses cried, “Wayne Lai! Always been, and always will!”
Raymond Lam (林峯) – Highs and Lows <雷霆掃毒>
Critics and audiences alike agree that Raymond Lam is definitely this year’s clear front-runner. With such a large Hong Kong and overseas fan base, some critics believe that TVB’s new voting system was meant to have Raymond take home the award. Raymond explained, “It is not out of the ordinary for fans to vote for their idol. I put my best effort with every performance I do. I never slack off.”
Damian Lau (劉松仁) – Silver Spoon, Sterling Shackles <名媛望族>
The veteran actor’s career spanned over four strong decades, and it is for this reason that Damian has already lost interest in winning any kind of award. Since day one, Damian has already expressed that he is giving up in the TV King race. “The awards are for the young ones,” Damian laughed. “I have no chance… I voted for my son, Kenneth Ma! If I was the audience, I would definitely vote for the younger ones!” Although Damian supports the one-vote-per-person system, he suggested that an even fairer system would be to split the awards into two categories – one winner chosen by the judges and another by the audience.”
Wayne Lai (黎耀祥) – The Confidant <大太監>
Along with Raymond Lam, Wayne Lai is also a front-runner to win TV King this year. Asked if Wayne, already a two-time TVB Best Actor winner, believes that he has a high chance to win this year, Wayne admitted, “It really depends! Certain dramas will always get certain benefits every year. In the past, it has always been said that drama that air towards the end of the year gets more publicity, but it is not really the case for this year!” Wayne expressed that he has confidence in winning this year, but if he also believes that Raymond Lam has a very high chance of winning. “He is maturing and has his own special style. This is what Raymond Lam succeeds in.”

Congrats to Bosco and Linda and the crew! Now, I wonder if WI will win Best Series.
It was airing during the typhoon season, signals # 8 to # 10. Everyone had to stay at home, probably watching TVB’s “Witness Insecurity”
But it was also places That lost the signal on the tv, so they weren’t able to watch it, so actually it adds up in up.
It was only small section of Hong Kong that was lost power, it didnt really affect that much.

Disagree. Kent Cheng was shouting most of the times in his “King Maker”, no inner emotions at all. A lot of people did not like him. He just got a big name “Best Actor” in movies.
Personally I don’t like watching his drama series ……… same kind of expressions in every drama series.
Am I the only one that hates Kent Cheng? He’s horrible in acting in my opinion. He may be an actor who is experienced but he doesn’t act well at all. What he did in King Maker was all shouting and yelling. I’ve never liked him in any of his drama. Damian is better.
There is no comparison at all between Damian Lau and Kent Cheng. Damian is so detailed in his acting while Kent is the same in every drama series. I could not see his characters at all because it was all Kent Cheng himself.

Kent Cheng made The King Maker! He was fantastic and he feels like an oily ugly black hearted man. Yes he shouts but that is his style. Much like how Raymond Lam poses, Kenneth Ma puppy dog looks, Damien’s stares, etc. And you tell me the young ones are better than him? Puh-leaseeee!
He’s a villain, so no votes for him.
Kent Cheng in King Maker got me fooled for being believe he was a good guy..so his acting’s skill is simply superb.
In a way he is sorta a good guy but different perspective from Yu Jing.
oh well. hated Kent Cheng to the max for his lousy portrayal. screaming for whatever reason. nonsense & unconvincing! no way parallel to Damian at all!

Last year it was quite expected who the winner would be. The fact that Kevin won not only one but 3 awards was fantastic to say the least. This year their is uncertainty who the winner will be and in a way more exciting. 4 hours’ more and we shall know! Is the new voting system fair? I have my doubts for I feel that the relevant top people in TVB should have a say in the selection and not totally left to the public which means that the actors with the biggest fan base will have a better chance of winning.

Damian Lau wasn’t in the nominated list because I didn’t see him. Tavia looked so old in the award ceremony. Poor dress and hairstyle choices. Myolie looked very boyish and young. Linda looked like a pure woman – fully covered up in a white dress.
Damien WAS nominated. In fact, he was one of the actors who received the most votes. Just that he did not attend the ceremony

Will they retouch the votes to let wayne win? Will it increase his price any further? What was the percentage again? They announced the full amount of votes at the beginning of the show, then the number of votes wayne received after that, but I can’t remember the numbers.

On the topic of whether TVB “retouched” the votes, the one that makes me wonder is Charmaine (who’s no longer a biological daughter). If WHB was popular enough amongst voters to win Best Drama (despite airing right at the beginning of the year), it seems reasonable to suggest that Charmaine might have gotten a lot of votes as well for her role in WHB.
But I’m happy with Tavia winning so I’m not exactly complaining.

Although Kenneth is an actor, his expressions are sometimes too open for all to see.
I doubt he did. He was probably confused about Wayne’s win, because most predicted Raymond.
His speech during Favourite character was very funny. He said this award many people don’t want to win, because if they win it, it means they can’t win Best actor. In that case, he doesn’t mind getting it every year. I think he was dazed that Raymond was the one who will walk home empty handed.
As what i feel, he is thinking “why not me??why is him??”….
Pity him…mayb there is lots of good news and good feeling that he can win.

Erm, I’m from Malaysia too and I like this series so much that I bought its original DVD for keep and for support of the series.
I don’t think location has anything to do with whether like/understand this series or not. It’s just different taste.
@justnice: i think those typical HK “si-lais” dont enjoy the series too much (as can be seen by its low ratings). But the younger generation Hong Kongers loved it thus the win. Well deserved!

The overall execution of the series is just very good. It’s careful and detailed production. Not sloppily done like some other series.
i think this is a sign from h.k. audience for tvb to make more like such shocking/experimental dramas than good feel dramas.

Surprisingly When Heaven Burns won the best series! I like that drama but my mom hates it (I think that reflects on the low rating in HK, youngsters watch online.)
Hoping for Kenneth to win but it’s okay, he won the Best Character. Wayne Lai is a really great actor! Guess no one will argue about him winning. Like one of the comments stated, really ‘sat ji meng guai’
As for Tavia, I’m really happy for her, she deserves this award. She stunned for a while (Later she explained because she wasn’t use to Qin Wa calling her ‘sei tai tai’) The cameraman wouldn’t stop focusing on Him Him haha.

That’s why I’m still a state of shock because if based on normal year of voting, Wayne is the strong contender and winning is a big surprise just as he did the last 2 award, but he could topple over kenneth and raymond is really un believable. Now that’s really old ginger is still the most spicy!!

I’m totally shocked that LF didn’t win. I can’t believe it. Not to say that Wayne doesn’t deserve it as his acting is superb but I really thought LF would win.
He didn’t win because it’s not online voting that can be rigged by his female fans. The voting requires identification number and phone number and is open only to Hongkongers.
RL’s acting is good but has never ever reached the level that is as outstanding+outspoken as Wayne’s.
Very happy indeed with Tavia and When Heaven Burns. My picks. But a bit shocked with Wayne..he is good at what he does of course. No doubt. But the characters seemed to be all the same in winning this award. Always end with hero saving the day/whole series.

Anyway, really happy & proud of Tavia’s achievement!!! She needless to campaign aggressively. Just like what Wayne said at his rally too, viewers will not vote based on how you campaign, but it’s based on your acting. Waste of time to campaign. Tavia is so true to herself!
Wayne acting is good as always. But I feel that his performance in TC is not as good compare to his other performances. I feel like he was overshadowed by others in there.

i just don’t understand…when TVB is in charge of deciding the winners people complain the awards are fixed, now even when they allow the HK citizens to make the final decision people STILL complain about the winners….Not defending TVB here but according to netizens TVB just cannot do anything right at all.
For one I think the winners list is one of the fairest in recent years. Not impressed with Raymond Lam so i wouldn’t have wanted him to win, but a little surprised since i thought Ray had the most fans.

For sure there are certain quarters of people who are dissatisfied with the results. It not only exists in TVB awards, but in other forms of competition as well. so blah, you cant satisfy everyone.

Well maybe a lot of people started voting after the episode finale of the confidant. The same as how kate surpasses charmaine all of a sudden just two days ago when charmaine had like 37% and kate only had 16/17%? I just think that this time tvb did not retouch the votes

I didn’t see the awards, but I checked the Chinese Wiki page and it says Koo Ming Wah won for Best Supporting Actor (congrats!!), but Power Chan was the one who presented him with the award…? Um, what? Did someone make a mistake with the Wiki entry? Anyway, I’m so happy for Nancy and KMW.
I’m sort of divided over WHB winning best series though. I’d love to see more TVB dramas taking that stylistic approach. I like the tone of it, I like what it was attempting, but WHB wasn’t particularly good at executing it and just came off as a pretentious wannabe. I thought.

No mistake with the wiki entry. Dodo cheng made the top 2 best supporting actor and actress to come forward to read the results themselves. So the loser will present the award to the winner. That’s quite cruel i’d say.
Nope. TVB was so cruel that they made the last 2 finalists stood on the stage and announced the winner together. The other will present the award to the winner. I dislike how it worked, it’s quite a shame for those who didn’t win.

Oh no, poor Ray, he was so confident and now he left empty handed. It’s not just who deserves to win who not but Ray should win, he spends too many years working ass off for TVB.
I think every actors worked their asses off. The only difference is what role do they play. I enjoyed wayne’s role and performance than lam fung. Bt im sure lf will get it next year

I think Mose should have won. Wayne Lai in the confidant wasn’t a memorable role. I would have forgotten next week the TV series…

Heheh. Even those who are neutral about him (like myself) are a bit surprised, despite feeling things won’t be that obvious. On paper, LF does have more fans (at least the more active kind who’d purchase his releases, see his concerts, etc.) as opposed to the more passive/armchair fans.
None of the leading actors/actresses were impressive this year, so I couldn’t care less over who won. Shame for the supporting ones who walked away empty-handed despite delivering better performances than the leading winners+candidates.
And Bottled Passion went completely under the radar…

sorry, but I was never supportive of any polls, because I know with or without the poll, the decision of who will win is under TVB’s decision, not me or you….or any polls for that matter…And if you read my previous post, I am very satified with Wayne winning the award,because he is way ahead of his competition in acting, except of course for Damian,(you know why he doesn’t get a chance, because he have no contract with TVB) no complaints there… I’m just disguisted at how TVB use their artists to create all this buzz about voting to get all the hype,
