TVB’s 43rd Anniversary Show
TVB’s 43rd Anniversary Show was held on November 19th. One-hundred-and-three year-old Chairman, Sir Run Run Shaw, attended the festivities while accompanied by his wife, TVB Deputy Chairman, Mona Fong, his children and grandchildren. Reinstated General Manager, Stephen Chan Chi Wan, appeared at the Anniversary holding hands with Viriginia Lok to dispel earlier rivalry rumors.
A Diamond Studded Event
Many female artists wore sexy gowns and dazzling diamond jewelry at TVB’s 43rd Anniversary. Courtesy of jewelry sponsors, Liza Wang Ming Chuen wore a total of 30.68 carats in diamond jewelry, valued at $76 million (HKD). Carol Dodo Cheng Yu Ling wore two sets of jewelry. The yellow diamond set was valued at $20 million (HKD) while the white diamond set was valued at $60 million (HKD)! Linda Chung Ka Yan wore a $9.3 million (HKD) jewelry set sponsored by Emperor Watch & Jewelry.
The Performances
Several veteran actors, such as Susan Tse Shuet Shum, Mary Hon Ma Lei, and Louise Lee Si Kei dressed sexily as “Lady Gaga” and performed a song and dance segment. The women were accompanied by Ha Yu and Shek Sau. Although the dance beat was slow, the applause was thunderous. MC Eric Tsang publicly praised Susan Tse, “Your career is on the fast track. Even your ‘career line’ is impressive! I almost did not recognize you!” Ha Yu said that the combined age of the elder performers surpassed one-thousand years, “We are able to do the things that young people are able to do too!”
In one of the Anniversary performances, the leading contenders for this year’s Best Actor Award, Wayne Lai Yiu Cheung and Moses Chan Ho, shared the same stage. Regarding rumors that Moses would receive an award in exchange for a contract, Wayne said, “Since receiving last year’s awards, no one has spoken to me about a management contract. But I like the current work arrangement with TVB!” Wayne joked and said that perhaps the award can be shared with Moses.
On the other hand, Moses said that the award should be decided by the audience. He denied renewing a contract in exchange for an award. His contract will not be expiring until a few years. Moses indicated that this year was a fruitful year: his commercials were well-received, and many people loved and supported him. He felt that he had already won many things.
In one of the game segments, artists had to compete in quickly placing a ping pong ball (which was tied to their waist) on the floor. Dressed in her No Regrets <義海豪情> costume, Fala put in all her energy to accomplish the task, unlike other sexily clad actresses who were too mindful of overexposure. Fala ended up falling on the ground, “It felt like I had a heart attack!”
The Three Gods Poke Fun at Artists
“The Three Gods” Louis Yuen Siu Cheung, Wong Cho Lam, and Johnson Li Sze Jit organized an awards ceremony segment, in which they presented the “Most Outstanding Youth Awards.” The trio displayed large-scale photos of artists in their youth, including a bikini photo of slim Kiki Sheung Tin Gnor. “At the time, there were 595 men who had nose bleeds at TVB!” A photo of a young Wayne Lai Yiu Cheung in his swimming briefs were shown. The trio said, “It’s obvious Wayne wanted to join the sports segment but the producers did not approve!” The trio showed a large photo of Raymond Lam Fung and a youthful Evergreen Mak Bo side-by-side. Raymond and the young Evergreen appeared to share many similar features. “Evergreen Mak, you were born in the wrong generation! Raymond Lam, don’t be too caught up in your current happiness. In ten years, you will look like this!” With Cho Lam, Louis, and Johnson’s humorous remarks, this became one of the funniest moments at the Anniversary show.
Carol Cheng and Pierre Ngo Won Top Prizes
Each year, TVB drew winners for its top prizes. MC, Carol Cheng Yu Ling, became the lucky winner. Eric Tsang objected, “In this world, the people who have the most continue to gain more!” Carol retorted, “I wish TVB will continue to do more and gain more! The more you have, the more you do!”
Recently popular, Pierre Ngo Ka Nin, also won a prize. Liza Wang sarcastically said that Pierre was running on good luck this year, despite Pierre ’s eye injury from a physical attack by TVB colleague, Sin Ho Ying. Although Pierre and Mr. Sin were both present at the Anniversary, they did not talk to each other the entire night. When approached by reporters, Mr. Sin quickly excused himself.
Artists Absent from the 2010 TVB Anniversary
Raymond Lam was currently filming a movie in China with Charlene Choi. Last night, Charlene posted a group photo of Raymond having dinner with the cast. Charlene wrote, “It’s great to be able to have an enjoyable dinner after a hard day of work!” Eva Huang Sing Yi was also present among other cast members.
Other artists that did not appear at TVB’s 43rd Anniversary included Charmaine Sheh Si Man, Sheren Tang Shui Man, Myolie Wu Hang Yee, and Bosco Wong Chung Chak due to filming commitments in China.

Jayne: A very disappointing TVB Anniversary show. Hopefully there will be more stars at the Awards Ceremony! Who do you think will win: Moses or Wayne? Charmaine or Sheren?
Jayne – you just asked a question that will stir up lots of debate.
Moses or Wayne? Charmaine or Sheren?
I’m not really sure what’s going to happen anymore, so many no-shows. I see a Sheren and Wayne win but I doubt tvb sees the same thing.
Charmaine had a very good year, if she doesn’t get it this year, I’m not sure when she will ever get it again.
Moses – I don’t see anything of him which makes him more deserving than Wayne.
Regardless – best of luck to all!
Personally, I think Wayne deserves to win more than Moses. Wayne’s character in No Regrets requires a lot more acting than Mose’s in CBML. And Wayne potrays the character very well.
Who do you think will win: Moses or Wayne? Charmaine or Sheren?
Who WILL win is the keyword, WILL and not SHOULD.
Well since TVB may not want to make this a TOm Hanks sort of situation, Moses WILL win. But should he is another question.
Sheren and Charmaine, frankly neither. But my feeling again is Charmaine WILL win but should she?
Well I have always said this is a popularity contest. TVB does get it right sometimes but most of the times, the winner may not be the best at acting but they win anyway.
Which makes TVB = TOTALLY VERY BORING
Surprise me TVB. Give it to a deserving winner. The least in my honest opinion is Charmaine. I find her performance in CBML absolutely inadequate. She should win one of these days but not for this abysmal performance.
Moses too, one of these days but not for this abysmal series.
Eh, thanks to Felix, we now have
1. TOTALLY VERY BAD
I added in
2. TOTALLY VERY BORING
Some may say TOTALLY VERY BLAND
Anything else you guys can come up with?
TOTALLY VERY BLAHHHHHHHHHHHH
I thought the show was entertaining. It was more emphasis on the veterans and I really liked it! Especially the veterans’ young photos. Kiki OmG! And she can sing so well! Haha!
The anniversary show was a bit of a disappointment because it lacked the star power compared to previous years. BORING! IMO, the GOOD parts of the show were:
1) Nat Chan’s intro at the beginning where they were doing parodies from some of the series this year. It had some good involvement from the original actors of the series and was a good way to review some of the series this year.
2) Having the veterans participate in a dance segment. Even though it wasn’t anything spectacular, I give kudos to the veterans for putting their efforts in. In recent years, it seems like the anniversary show was more for promoting the younger artists, so I’m glad there was a change this year for a chance for the veterans to shine.
3) The 3 gods’ award ceremony was a great way to give some stars recognition and it was different from what they were performing the previous 2 years’ shows. I loved the comparison of Mak Bao to Ray! Funny!
4) Lastly, Kik1’s singing performance! OMG, I was blown away by her beautiful voice! She performed very well! It’s a difficult song to sing, but she sang it beautifully! She shined!
What I didn’t like:
1) No mention or presence of the GMG cast. They are also an anniversary series, but Felix nor the rest of the cast were invited and he ended up watching the show at home! I understand why Felix would be angry!
2) The fact that it seems like the awards ceremony will be a battle between Wayne and Moses, Sheren vs Charmaine, CBML vs. NR. What about the other series, the other actors? Steven Ma? Felix Wong? Bowie Lam? You think the other actors would even want to attend the ceremony since TVB is already staging it as a battle between the cast of CBML and NR? I won’t be surprised if Felix will not attend the award ceremony.
3) Many repeated, similar performances to last year except the ones I mentioned earlier. Dancing in the rain for example. But I do enjoy Michael, Nancy and Grace’s portion. They are great dancers.
4) Most importantly, lack of star attendance!
To answer Jayne’s question, I think NR deserves to win from a series and acting perspective. Moses and Charmaine are good actors, but I don’t believe they should win for their performance in CBML. I find that series overrated. I like GMG and FOS much better!
I can’t comment because I didn’t watch. It doesn’t fit my interest and my favorites aren’t there to serve as eye pacifier.
Besides the FLS Award segment, I like the Real Fake Kungfu segment the most.
On singing part. It always amazed me that Eric Tsang’s voice was so chicken like when he’s talking, high pitch and like his voice cannot come out. But, when he sings, he can sing even difficult songs well. I remember he once sang ‘Phantom of the Opera’ and he actually sang it quite well. His singing this time was also good and his voice sounds quite manly. Different from his talking voice.
The singing segment was the most disappointing one. Like some family function with uncles and sisters and relatives singing karaoke. If the world sees this they will think HK doesn’t have singers.
pretty boring show… the only thing that surprised me was kiki can really sing that well! was she a singer before? and omg, evergreen mak totally looked like raymond lam when he was younger. will raymond lam grow up to look like evergreen as well?!?! ROFL.
i prefer last year’s show.
I have only two words for this year’s show, lame and retarded..
I’m not sure why CBML is such a herald series or so it pretends to be.
I don’t know why TVB gives itself such high regard for its own stuff knowing most HK audiences are stuck with watching its shows in that time slot cause they are their slaves. They should just make a Best Audience Award and give it to the “family viewers” as they luv to call them.
“Thank you for not telling us what a sh*t year we’ve had. Thank you for helping us pretend CBML is quality. Thank you for letting our creativity dwindle. Really, thank you!”
Since Sheren and Wayne won awards last year, I think Moses and Charmaine will win this year.
Below are my predictions of what I think will happen:
1) Moses and Charmaine will win. I think TVB will use the high ratings of “Can’t Buy Me Love” to justify their reason.
2) Charmaine is one of TVB’s biggest stars. You can argue that there are more talented actresses, but Charmaine is VERY popular and she is definitely TVB’s #1 sister now, especially after the ratings bonanza of “Can’t Buy Me Love.”
3) The awards panel considers TVB’s business interests in deciding the winners. Charmaine is very popular in China and personally, I think she is in the position to do well (make more money) if she leaves TVB and films mainland series exclusively. But Charmaine is also a grateful person and understands the power of retaining good relations with TVB as well. Charmaine seems to have struck an arrangement with TVB where she will film more mainland series to make money and will return once in awhile to TVB to help them out. Very similar to Roger Kwok’s arrangement. But to keep her happy and maintain the mutually beneficial relationship, TVB will probably give Charmaine the award.
3) Charmaine has good political connections as TVB. She gets along well with both Stephen Chan and Virginia Lok. Rumor has it that Stephen Chan gave the push in influencing the 2009 awards panel to recognize Sheren Tang and Wayne Lai. You may say in the end, hard work and good acting skills won (but not without the support of Mr. Chan). Since Wayne and Sheren already got recognized last year and Mr. Chan was on administrative leave most of this year, that means that Virginia Lok probably had a big push in influencing the outcome of awards results.
In the summer, the media was abuzz that Raymond Lam, Moses, and Wayne were the front runners in the Best Actor race. But Raymond’s “Growing Through Life” fizzled in ratings. Otherwise if the ratings had been in the high 30s, I seriously believe that Ms. Lok would have pushed the awards panel to give the award to Raymond.
As we can see, nothing happens by chance at TVB. In two weeks, we’ll find out the results.
I thought Kiki’s singing was the highlight of the show – what a pleasant surprise! But when Eric Tsang sang, I wasn’t sure if it was meant to be hilarious or what. Anyway, this guy can pull off anything.
As for the awards, maybe they will give it to Moses and Sheren so as to “balance” it out? In my opinion, Wayne and Sheren should definitely win. If you ignore the over-the-top promotion of No Regrets and pretend that you came across this series by chance, it’s actually a real solid one.
I’m glad I was not the only one who think this years anniversary gala was disappointing! There were only mostly skits that weren’t really that funny, not many dance intros like the provious years…. I liked those. Hope next year would be better!!
IT’s definitely very unlikely that the same TV queen/king will get the award two years in a role.. but I do think Sheren or Wayne SHOULD get the awards.. Their roles were powerful and much harder to protray (they had a good script).. but I think who WILL win is Moses or Charmaine because they are so popular. Tbh, I really don’t think Can’t Buy My Love is a winning series.. it’s like any other costume comedies except with a good cast. And moses and charmaine’s acting are great.. but in that series they exaggerated so much it became annoying. Isn’t TV queen/king, about the best acting?
Kiki has always been a good singer. She had a lovely voice in “I Have A Date With Spring”.
The anniversary shows seems to have gone really downhill as the years progress. I remember how fun and colorful they were back in the 80s… I can never forget all of those great memories and daring performances by the artists and staff. Where has all that gone???
“The singing segment was the most disappointing one. Like some family function with uncles and sisters and relatives singing karaoke. If the world sees this they will think HK doesn’t have singers.”
Funn, this sounds like a Simon Cowell comment on American Idol. LOL
Ugh – TVB needs new management.
Virginia Lok and Mona Fong are both driving me nuts. These ladies do not have a keen eye for talent.
Where is 4th Uncle and his plan to take over TVB? Please do it quick.
While we’re at it, may I know why is this new girl Mag Lam is being pushed out at a very alarmingly suffocating rate? LOL
with the music company fiasco, tvb is trying to seize the opportunity and create its own singers.
mag lam – surprisingly is a great singer and i would be surprise if they don’t push for her. she actually has a series coming out soon.
I think that CBML was a very meaningful and funny seris.the script was written very good teaches lots of thing.I really like the part when Charmaine and Moses got in jail together. That part was very good very meaningful.CBML had teach me lots of meaningful thing in life like love ur family.Other people may betray u but ur family will always support u .Treasure ur love.I have learn lot and lots from this seris.i don’t know the reason why u guys think is is stupid but it is not.The acting is great.Did u guys know that Charmaine and Moses are the only Tvb artist.that was invited to Asian Emmy award. In 3rd stage of 2010 TV Programme Appreciation Index Survey (not final yet), [Can’t Buy Me Love] the only TVB series in Top 10.
Charlie, your family will always support you? I don’t want to sound pessimistic or offensive but is your comment suppose to reflect what actually occurs in our world Earth?
The ‘blood is thicker than water’ rhetoric was always been a misnomer to me. You support people you know, you a familiar to, you have grown with etc etc. That saying is from a bygone era in bygone history of bygone traditions with bygone validity. Let such simple values, distortions of reality, insults to the intellect, be bygone. In lay terms: level up!
Just because it’s not your reality doesn’t mean it’s not Charlie’s reality. He/she might have very supportive family. So, to him/her, it’s not a distortion of reality.
Thank u Kidd
The invitation of Charmaine and Moses to the Asian Emmy Awards 2011 could have indicated that they will be the winners this year for TV King/Queen. Maybe?
It’s funny with all the controversy I have a small voice that says they may even give it to Raymond Lam whom I hope not but TVB likes to put him on the spot like the APAC award as he comes across someone who can take the hit and still say loyal things about the company. Or to Steven Ma just to take the focus off either Wayne or Moses?
For the series this year, I feel Wayne still deserves it. Roger Kwok got it twice I think for similar roles (Ah Wong). Followed by Raymond Lam but more for GTL than Mysteries – unfortunately this is not going to be the case. Moses although I like him but his acting hasn’t shown well this year and none of the dramas he’s in was good especially CBML – I dragged my feet through it.
As for Felix, he is deserving on acting but not on overall package hence it was never there for him. I feel his outburst was great and he was really demanding for some respect for Guns and all its cast/producer. Instead of using EMYM at the beginning with Ah Lek, they could have used Guns.
As for TVB, is it not obvious it is a Catherine vs Tommy Leung thing. Whether CBML or NR, Catherine wins. Also funny how this biological son/daughter thing keeps propping up. The award has been going to the contracted artists eg Ha Yu, Wayne etc. It’s now used more like an excuse to prevent the bio kids from ever be deserving of the award/opportunity.
Why do they only invite Charmaine & Moses to the Asia Emmy Awards. What about the rest of the series and those artistes. The organiser makes it as through the rest DOES NOT EXIST!!!!!
I am confused. Is this a whole new award or the Asian TV awards?
http://www.asiantvawards.com/ata-2010-nomination-list.asp
My Predictions:
Best Drama: Can’t Buy Me Love
Best Actor: Moses Chan, I don’t like it b/c personally I feel he did a good but not great job (but the ratings! for CBML, no denial). But Wayne seems to lost his edge (maybe b/c of stress) in No Regrets.
Best Actress: Charmaine Sheh
Supporting Actor: Evergreen Mak
Supporting Actress: Kara Hui, no good choices, she seems reasonable.
Favourite Actor: Raymond Lam
Favourite Actress: Linda Chung . . . if not Charmaine Sheh. I’ll give it to Linda, again, need to push new blood and pass on the torch.
Most Improved Actor: Raymond Wong
Most Improved Actress: Natalie Tong
Seeing that Raymond was nominated for his role in MOL instead of GTL, will he as more chance? I didn’t read the description of his role when I check the voting page. I only realised this when it was mentioned in this news.
http://asianuniverse.net/forums/Raymond_Lam_highest_online_votes_for_TV_King_Felix_Wong_mak_t255738.html
Sigh, i don’t know. I mean if Moses & Charmine do win the best actress/actors award, it just doesn’t look right.. I mean CBML isn’t really a winning drama in my opinion. & about the ratings, you guys do know that the producers counted the Mytv points too right? <– now that's just not reasonable AT ALL. Without the Mytv points, it's just around 31~36 rating views. If No Regrets were to count their Mytv points.. it would beat the record. But i suppose, it's best for charmine & Moses to win..
@Katie
The CBML ratings did not include the Mytv points. The producer only mentioned that if including the Mytv points, the last episode get how many points. But, the official ratings did not include the Mytv points. So, CBML did beat the record of No Regrets so far fair and square.
Kidd, CBML finale rating was 42 and it didn’t supass Rosy Business and MOL ratings.
So the Mytv rating for CBML is just to hype the series. Jeez.
@Rach
So?
Did I say CMBL’s finale rating surpass Rosy Business and MOL? No, I didn’t.
Katie thought CBML rating included the Mytv points, and I point out that the official ratings did not include Mytv. So, CBML beat No Regrets in official ratings fair and square. No cheating like one add Mytv record, one didn’t. Anything incorrect in what I said?
“So the Mytv rating for CBML is just to hype the series. Jeez.”
Yeah, CBML is hyped, No Regrets is not. Please..
Both series get equal attention in Anniversary Gala. Both series Mytv points were reported in news. But, only CBML is hyped in your POV. It’s not ok for CBML producer to mention the Mytv points, but, it’s totally ok for No Regrets to get such news.
http://just-noregrets.blogspot.com/2010/10/no-regrets-hits-115-million-online.html
I don’t see anything wrong with a producer trying to promoted her own series.
Some of you CBML haters are so double standard.
Btw, just check wiki. It is true that CBML did not surpass Rosy Business in finale ratings. But, it did surpass MOL.
Ok, just check wiki. No Regrets has caught up with CBML in ratings. So, CBML not actually beating it now if comparing the episodes that has been aired. How much NR get in finale, will we see when the time comes.
Wanna check, is it true Felix is now in the top 5 or something list for favourite actor award?
@Kidd, there you go. Next time please check facts before BLASTING.
@ Rach
Your facts ain’t right either (CMBL not surpassing MOL?). So, nothing to be triumphant about. At least, I have the guts to admit and correct my own mistake, unlike you (who conveniently overlook the CBML > MOL part of my findings).
And sorry, I don’t regret my ‘blasting’. I still stand by most of what I said (NR and CBML getting equal hypes) and my assertion that CBML did not include Mytv points in it’s official ratings is correct. So, my pointing out this fact to Katie is still no wrong.
Lastly, you said that CBML did not surpass RS and MOL, but, no mention of NR. So, you didn’t know about NR ratings catching up with CBML either until I mentioned it here. So, again, nothing to be triumphant about. Your knowledge of facts is no better than mine and you also give the wrong facts.
One more point. Rosy Business is last year’s series. It has nothing to do with this year’s award or this year’s ratings competition. So, why bring it in to put down CMBL?
I don’t favour one series over the other. But, am tired of seeing CBML so maligned by NR fans (and GMG fans after the anniversary gala) and CBML haters.
@Kidd
I’m a GMG fan hating on TVB
Kidd, I am one of those CBML haters but I don’t care about ratings to justify the quality of a series. I have no idea what’s all those ratings stuff you’re talking about; what I do know is CBML sucks. Even if it wins the ratings war.
I agree that both NR and CBML are equaly hyped. Prob 2 pull the ratings of the award show and make it less obvious who wud win. They should hype up a fistful of stance 2. That did pretty well 2 and my fave series this year.
@Colly, Totally Very Boring has run out ideas on producing good series. The truth hurts coz 2010 is not their year.
@ Funn
Have you watch CBML beyond episode 1 and some episodes previews?
Well, you might not care about ratings, but, others obviously do, especially CMBL haters and NR fans. They are the ones who keep on comparing rating, saying stuff like
‘CBML is cheating because they include Mytv point (untrue)’.
‘NR get more Mytv points than CBML. If including Mytv points, NR rating > CBML’.
From what I see, people who like CBML just enjoy the series. They don’t seem obsess that CBML should win awards or have high ratings. It’s the fans of the other series who are so damn concern about ratings and so afraid that CBML will win any award over their beloved actors and series.
Lastly, my ratings comment are for those who are concerned with the ratings. So, it’s ok that you have no idea what I’m talking about regarding this matter.
Kidd, honestly, no. And those few previews, I have had enough of those. And frankly talking about NR, 1st episode and some previews I saw some problems with the storytelling and characterisation. It is by no means perfect. Why I am not concerned with ratings is with TVB I was never aware of the ratings and ones I do my opinion is people will watch what they want to watch, whatever the ratings may be. I am concerned about ratings but these days I am fed up. Awards, ratings, and even viewership do not always indicate the quality of storytelling. As I have always said in reviews and such, it is a matter of opinion and not agreeing with others do not mean it is not a valid agreement.
From what I can see everybody’s fans are obsessed with the winning aspect, not just CBML or NR or anything else. Why others are concerned is valid; CBML seems to get recognition which others feel is not justified. The fans of CBML has nothing to lose. If your series is crap and it starts winning awards and such, it is good. Likewise if your series is good but being pushed aside by crap, surely there is cause to be concerned.
If talking about ratings, include in illegal downloads and all, I wonder who wins? You must admit, CBML’s individual actors have bigger fanbase each. So that’s why CBML gets the exposure. For TVB it is win-win situation. I may keep going on and on about CBML being crap and all, it is in the end my opinion.
Like I said if you want me to nitpick, I was both impressed and annoyed with NR’s 1st episode.
^ not necessary. there are some people who are also very “fiercely protective” of CBML, and are afraid that the other series will overtake their beloved actors and series.
whether NR or CBML win in terms of ratings, NR is still definitely better than CBML. i have watched both, hence i think i can compare these 2 series. NR wins CBML in every aspect. sorry, i just don’t buy cheeziness and over-acting. just my opinion though.
sorry my comments are directed to kidd’s comment about ppl liking CBML don’t really care much. com kinda screwed up.
