Venus Wong Gets Candid on Growing Her Career
In recent years, Venus Wong (王敏奕) has been rapidly growing her career as she attempts to rid her “pretty girl” image. The actress starred in TVB’s thriller The Spectator <旁觀者> where she plays a hypersensitive policewoman who develops a sadistic relationship with a serial killer played by Pakho Chau.
Recalling when she first met the drama’s producer, Venue thought that she would be acting in an ordinary love story and didn’t expect to get emotional during filming: “Sometimes I don’t want to cry, but there are too many emotions. It’s easy for me to get into a character’s situation and emotions, so I cried a lot even if the script didn’t ask for it.”
Venus is aware that many netizens think that she is just another pretty face, but she does not agree that actors should be limited by their appearances. Venus shared, “When I hear people say that they can’t recognize me in a drama, I would be very happy. It’s because the audience truly saw the character and not Venus Wong. I enjoy being an actress hiding behind the character while working hard. I’m happy that the outside world recognizes this. I am not a talented actress. I have to work hard and improve to do a good job.”
Balancing Career with Marriage
With a tough filming schedule, Venus shared that her husband and Eric Tsang’s (曾志偉) son, Derek Tsang (曾國祥)is often worrying about her. However, Derek understands that it’s the nature of her career and he is happy that Venus is doing something she likes.
Venus continued, “My husband understands that this kind of satisfaction cannot be measured by money or material things. Everyone’s sense of accomplishment is different and it doesn’t necessarily mean winning any awards. My husband gives me the freedom to do what I want, and I give him the freedom to film. We both like dramas and our common topic and tacit understanding. There isn’t any pressure or disagreement.”
Venus once hoped to act in a project that is directed by her husband, but later decided that there would be too much pressure. Venus revealed, “As an actress and a director, we want to focus on the work and let the project speak for ourselves. If we work together, the project might get overlooked. [Derek] doesn’t want me to be the center of any gossip. He said he will not work with me unless it’s necessary. However, I think there is a chance. Nothing is impossible.”
As the couple are busy with work right after getting married, Venus admitted that their lifestyles are not suitable for having children, “If there are children, you have to spend a lot of time with them. It’s hard to do that in this industry. We both work in this industry and one person needs to make a sacrifice. Now that the engine is running, you can’t stop. As you are getting more opportunities, you have to work hard to avoid regretting it in the future. There is still time. Having kids is a big fate and we will see. There is no guarantee in this.”
Being Accused of Receiving More Opportunities Due to Family Connections
Regarding netizen’s perception that Venus is getting special treatment at TVB because she is Eric’s daughter-in-law, Venus wanted to emphasize that this is not true. Venus emphasized that when she first signed with TVB, Eric was not a senior executive and she signed a contract because she wanted to try something new in her career.
Venus claimed that the rumor is unfair, “The producers and directors chose me. I believe they sincerely thought they could give me an opportunity. I’m grateful to the producers and directors who picked me. I originally signed with the hope of being able to sing. Although the plan could not keep up with the changes, I haven’t given up and I still hope for this opportunity.”
