Vicki Zhao Confirms Divorce in Weibo Post

Best known for her role as the feisty “Little Swallow” in legendary Cdrama My Fair Princess <還珠格格>, embattled Chinese star Vicki Zhao Wei (趙薇) all but disappeared from the public spotlight after being cancelled by Chinese authorities in 2021. Following recent news of her husband Huang Youlong‘s (黃有龍) debt crisis, the 48-year-old also made a public statement confirming her divorce in a Weibo post!

Putting distance between herself and Huang, who is revealed to be facing a lawsuit for $753 million HKD in unpaid debts and interests, Vicki confirmed her divorce. “I have officially divorced Mr Huang many years ago, our marriage was legally dissolved long ago,” She added “Any events, comments or news reports about him have nothing to do with me. I implore all parties to acknowledge these facts and avoid implicating me in unfounded reports. Thank you all.”

In her last public Weibo post in 2021, she resurfaced only in December, with a post mourning the passing of Taiwanese novelist and literary giant Chiung Yao (瓊瑤), who played a key role in her meteoric rise to success. With it being three years since her last update, her lengthy absence from showbiz naturally evoked immense public curiosity about her whereabouts during this period.

2008:  Vicki marries businessman Huang Youlong. The couple welcome a daughter, Huang Xin, nicknamed “Little April”.

2011: The couple buys Château Monlot, a winery in France’s Bordeaux region, for 40 million Euros.

2019: She deletes traces of Huang Youlong from social media.

As part of the government crackdown on Chinese celebrities, Vicki’s works including My Fair Princess and Painted Skin <畫皮>, as well as her likeness in other shows, were removed from Chinese streaming platforms, and her name removed from credits of TV shows.

Vicki reportedly fled to France, though she claims to be with her parents in Beijing in an IG post, which she later deleted.

Possible Comeback for “Little Swallow”?

Founder of Golden Leaf Resort Hotel in Guangzhou, Huang Youlong is reportedly shareholder to some 26 companies. Many were surprised when news broke about his recent debt crisis.

Back in 2019, Vicki was found to have deleted all posts and photos related to Huang Youlong, which had many netizens speculating that the two had divorced, though it is believed that Vicki held back publicly announcing her divorce due to the couple being entangled in many financial issues, and her desire to protect their child. Thus, Vicki’s recent public announcement is interpreted by many as Chinese authorities lift on regulations against her, leaving open the possibility of a showbiz comeback.
