“Vincenzo” Opens With High Ratings
Starring Song Joong Ki, Jeon Yeo Been, and boyband 2PM’s Taecyeon, Korean drama Vincenzo premiered its first two episodes this weekend. Streaming internationally on Netflix, the tvN drama also opened with strong ratings in South Korea. The first two episode averaged ratings of 7.7 percent and 9.3 percent respectively, making it the top performer among dramas airing in that time slot.
The story opens with a mafia lawyer, Vincenzo Cassano (Song Joong Ki), returning from Italy to South Korea to search for gold hidden underneath a commercial building. The 15 tons of gold were hidden in a secret room in the basement of the building by a rich Chinese businessman who had passed away from heart disease one year ago. However, the secret room cannot be opened easily–if anyone tried to open it with force, the entire building would collapse.
Vincenzo tries to thwart medical conglomerate Babbel from buying the building for redevelopment, but the company refuses and uses scare tactics to scare away the building’s tenants to advance the purchase. Hoping to delay Babbel’s plans, Vincenzo holds a wine tasting party with many famous attendees at the building.
Viewers were pleased with Song Joong Ki’s suave portrayal of a calculative lawyer facing off against the antagonists. However, many felt that lead actress Jeon Yeo Been’s acting was exaggerated and her diction was unclear.
