Wallace Huo Had Crush on Ruby Lin for 10 Years
After ten years of friendship, Wallace Huo (霍建華) and Ruby Lin (林心如) shocked fans when they publicly acknowledged their relationship and got married in Bali last year. The couple welcomed the arrival of their daughter in January. Although both have stayed private about their personal lives, Wallace accepted an interview recently and opened up about his relationship with Ruby.
The 37-year-old Taiwanese heartthrob admitted that he developed a crush on Ruby after their collaboration in Sound of Colors <地下鐵> in 2005. “Because we were good friends, I didn’t dare to confess. I didn’t want to ruin our friendship.” Lacking the courage to confess, Wallace instead stayed friends with Ruby for more than 10 years.
Similarly, Ruby was also afraid to cross that line of friendship and become lovers with Wallace. For years, Ruby held back her feelings because she believed, “Friends can be forever, but lovers can separate. And when that happens, it’s going to be hard to get back to how it was before.”
Wallace said, “Honestly, I don’t have very many friends. If she didn’t take the initiative to contact me, then I would never have made the first move. Very few friends would contact me. I felt it was a wonderful feeling [we had together], and didn’t want to lose it. I was afraid our relationship would change. I was very happy with the status quo and didn’t necessarily need to become [lovers].” It was only until after he felt he had reached a level of success in his career did he dare profess his feelings.
It was not until 2016 that their relationship came to light. Wallace admitted that it was very tiring having to date in secret. “When we made plans to meet up, it was quite exhausting. We had to hide and sneak around. We took our relationship underground.” After going public with their relationship, it felt like a burden was lifted off their shoulders. The couple celebrated by openly holding hands and going out to hot pot for dinner. “At the time, it was at the height of our news. But I felt that as a man, I should just do what I want to do.”

Right time, right place. Being friends or lovers demand different emotional expectations and investments. Wallace is a very homely man and Ruby is very outgoing. But Ruby did mention in some interviews a couple of years ago that she has ‘slowed down’ that she does not go out as much. 10 years ago, if they have got together, their relationship is unlikely to work. Wallace was less famous than Ruby then. And being a sensitive man with pride, he would not have married someone who earned so much more than him. He did say in the interview with Luyu, that unless he is in a position to take care of the person, he will not marry.
I kind of wonder if he would be willing to clear up the rumors about him initiating flirt with Zhao liying behind the scenes, I heard about them often but never seen videos or footages of them.
@davy Wallace a flirt? I wish the rumour is more believable. If Wallace is a flirt, he would have countless girlfriends. By nature, he is just the opposite of flirt. Actors should treat their colleagues with respect and care and being nice and respectful to each other isn’t the same as flirting.
Rumour mongering is rabid in the entertainment industry particularly Asian. Actors will have to take all these romance rumours with a grain of salt unless it borders on defamation and is scandalous. Wallace’s studio seldom issue any clearance on rumours unless it is scandalous enough to defame of which his studio did, and won a defamation case against some media for spreading scandalous and defaming rumours about him.
I suppose this is what you called fate.
