Wayne Lai: “I Never Thought I Would Win Best Actor Again!”

At the 2010 TVB Anniversary Awards Ceremony, Wayne Lai Yiu Cheung and Sheren Tang Shui Man won the Best Actor and Best Actress Awards, breaking the myth that the awards were only given to TVB’s managed artists. The competition in this year’s awards was one of the fiercest in recent years. Wayne and Sheren’s performance in No Regrets <巾幗梟雄之義海豪情> beat Moses Chan Ho and Charmaine Sheh Shi Man’s Can’t Buy Me Love <公主嫁到> in the awards battle.

In his acceptance speech, Wayne Lai said, “I thank TVB for all the opportunities they have given me over the years. Last year, all the people that I wanted to thank, I have thanked them already when I received the Best Actor Award. After receiving the award last year, I thought I will never get a chance to win the award again. I do not want to waste everyone’s time [for running through the list again]. If you do not remember, you can re-watch last year’s anniversary clip. There are people I would like to especially thank: Catherine Tsang—without you, I will not be able to be here today. Lau Sing is one of my favorite roles; I will remember it for the rest of my life!”

When Sheren Tang was announced the Best Actress, guest presenter, Ti Lung, forgot to give the trophy to her. Sheren said embarrassingly, “You should give the award to me.” After receiving her award, Sheren said, “I want to say that when you word dedicatedly, people will notice. Many people may not have the opportunity to appear on this stage, but they work very hard as well. Each day, they work long hours just like myself. Filming television series is an arduous task. For my good performance in this role, I have to thank the Lord Jesus in giving me an enriching life experience. Thank you God for giving me my passion for acting and a crazy zest, which allows me to get into the character of my roles!”

After the ceremony, reporters asked whether Wayne and Sheren will sign with TVB after receiving their awards. The pair noted that TVB management has not approached them about signing any contracts.

Evergreen Mak Cheung Ching was extremely moved when he received the Best Supporting Actor. Upon Receiving the Most Improved Actress Award, Natalie Tong thanked her deceased mother and wished for another chance to love her. When Raymond Wong Ho Yin received the Most Improved Actor Award, he thanked his wife’s support and revealed that the couple are expecting their first baby.

Anniversary Was a Ratings Bonanza

The 2010 TVB Anniversary Awards Ceremony averaged thirty-eight points in ratings, peaking at forty-three points. The peak occurred for one minute, likely when the Best Actor Award was announced.

Jayne: Sheren Tang and Wayne Lai’s victories were well-deserved. They produced the strongest performances this year. Since TVB’s top awards are not necessarily given to the best acting talent, I truly think that if No Regrets did not achieve the highest ratings of the year, Charmaine and Moses would probably have won the Best Actress and Best Actor Awards.

Best Supporting Actress and Actor Awards always have room for debate, as many veterans qualify for this role due to their strong acting expertise. In recent years, these two awards seem to be given to the most popular show of the year and the supporting artists ride the wave.

Hated or not, the TVB Anniversary Awards Ceremony is still a ratings king and one of the most anticipated events of the year in Hong Kong entertainment!

  1. Congrats to Wayne, Sheren and Evergreen. They were deserved to win the awards.

For the Best Supporting Actress, I wish Elena Kong or Kara Hui should have won it. Fala Chan’s acting is ewww.

  2. congratulations to the both of them! it’s a win well-deserved! 😀

the only awards that i’m not happy with is the fav male award and the best drama award. haish…

  3. Well deserved with of course. If they keep this up, TVB may be obliged to give them every year!

  4. Have to disagree with you there, Jayne.

I think that Sheren and Wayne are, by far, better at acting than Charmaine and Moses, and what’s more, they achieved these awards based on their superior acting abilties and not their popularity, or their standing in TVB politics since they defied this being both non-contracted artistes (correct me here if I’m wrong about their employment status).

I’m really happy for them – that they won well-deserved awards, and a double bonus that they won it together, 2 years in arow, for their part in 2 brilliant TV series (despite minor flaws).

Well done to both Sheren and Wayne!!!

  5. Congrats to both Sherern and Wayne! They truly deserved. Seeing how TVB’s politics worked over the years, before watching NR, I doubted that TVB would give them these awards 2 years in a row and would try to let someone else win this year. But the audience response and support for NR and their acting was overwhelming, so if TVB did not give the awards to them, there would be a lot of complaints. Even if Charmaine and Moses won this year, it would be underserving and it would just make them look bad because of the majority support for Sheren and Wayne.

I was most disappointed with results for Best Series and My Favorite Male Character Award. Like most people, I believe NR and Kenneth Ma should have won in those categories, respectively. I’m also happy for Natalie Tong, but also feel bad for Selena Li as I think she is overdue for this award. I think she has improved a lot through the years and I like her style as she never seems to overact and carries out her crying scenes quite well.

I was also disappointed that Fala won Best Supporting Actress again. I think any or the 4 other nominees would have been a better choice. I thought that was a pretty competitive category as well. I would have been happier if any of the others like Kara, Elena or Nancy won instead.

  6. Impmuse, I meant that TVB’s awards are sometimes based on popularity, which is why the outcome may be difficult to predict. No doubt that Sheren and Wayne are strong acting talents. 🙂

  7. Thanks for the clarification Jayne, and I do agree with you about the outcome being difficult to predict – it’s about how TVB management play their game, isn’t it!

  8. Raymond lam won most favourite male character cos to many, myself included, he was definitely remembered by the role he played, professor king.

I don’t think the rest of the nominees deserved it more than him cos after watching their series, I don’t really recall the names of their roles. Whereas, for Ray, many remember him as Kingsley king or professor king. It’s definitely my favourite male character!!

  9. How can anyone not remember a name as bombastic and in your face as KINGSLEY KING? More so I believe he is called KINGS?

And all those negative publicity sort of helped publicise this series anyway. I am still baffled by the ridiculous Chinese title.

  10. By the way Felix didn’t show up. Way to go! At least he’s consistent! If by title, Gun Metal Grey has my vote as best English and Chinese title of the year.

  11. I cannot believe they vote “Can Buy Me Love” as a best series and Fala Chan as the Supporting Actress. What’s wrong with the Hong Kong people? I cannot stand CBML, it was just so ridiculous series and all of the actor and actress were so faking by trying to make the series as funny but I cannot laugh. As for Fala Chan she can be as the most improve actress but not supporting. Her role can be eliminate in the NR and I don’t see it as her best role in it.

Congratulation to Sheren and Wayne! I would love to see Piere gets the reward because I think his role in NR is outstanding. Always love Sheren and Wayne. Hope to see them again in many other series!!

  12. If there’s another installment for NR next year, Wayne and Sheren might win again lol

  13. @vivien lol, as much as i love RB’s and NR’s cast, i don’t think they will collaborate again. tim gor said that it’s too tiring to film NR, and i can understand why. even wayne has talked about quitting acting… haish…

and yeah, wtf was up with the best drama award? CBML? HAHAHA! biggest joke of the night. TVB made the CBML cast look bad… gosh.

  14. Perhaps NR might have won Best Drama if Fala and her diary weren’t in it.

Agree with JN that Pierre’s role was pretty good, but as an artiste, he seems to talk too much, which may put people off.

This year’s awards ceremony was quite exciting. I really like Wayne more and more, seeing how he was so unpretentious throughout the whole event.

  15. ^ even if fala and her diary were in it, i don’t think it would have diminished NR’s chances of winning best drama. i’ve watched both CBML and NR. NR has a better storyline and direction overall.

but if NR dind’t win best drama because NR got the other 4 big awards, then i’d rather fala not win best supporting actress, and NR win best drama lol.

by now, everybody knows that the best drama award is just a CONSOLATION prize / pork prize for CBML. if this is really the new standard of dramas for tvb, i really worry for tvb’s future.

  16. A big congratulations to Sheren and Wayne!!!! I’m so proud of them and so glad that they won. They deserved it to the very best. Their acing is better than Charmaine and Moses.

I’m recently watching The Conquere’s Story. I love Wayne Lai’s performance there. That role is the same as his real life. He have to struggle a lot until someone finally acknowledges his acting. It’s about time. He was a good piggy at Journey to the West as well.

  17. CBML won fave drama. This is the greatest joke. The applause was zzzzzzz. LOL

  18. Why did raymond win?!?! I like him but there were people that deserved the award more then him…

It’s either.. TVB wanted to give it to him so he wouldnt leave empty-handed, or all the votes were from fans.

  19. hmmm . . . No Regrets won 4 awards & still didn’t win the Best Series!? Fala’s victory was bit of a shocker for me. Standard TVB style

  20. I thought the night was quite unbelievable. I can’t believe Wayne and Sheren actually pulled it off, capturing best actor/actress two years in a role. Definitely well deserved. I think TVB is starting to actually go by the awards’ name when it comes to best actor/actress and favorite characters. TVB is actually recognizing talent for best and popularity for favorite. Second shocker was CBML winning best series. Even the presenter thought it would be NR, as did the audience. Third shocker is Louise Lee winning lifetime achievement. No doubt she has the credentials to win it but I expected someone who is not currently as active in leading roles.

  21. @star Raymond already got the tvb.com popularity award and I believe if not for votes, any one of the others would have got it. He wouldn’t have gone empty handed. Not a big deal.

@ Ricky, agree I really thought they would have given it to Lee Heung Kam.

  22. I was going to agree how odd it was for Fala Chen (and her diary) to have won Best Supporting Actress but since I can’t name any other person in her place, I’ll accept she won (given) it.

Every time it got to her character and her diary I had to fast forward it. I would have liked NR more without her character in it… I think Fala could stand out more playing villain roles. She has that ‘look’ all across her face.

  23. […] In his acceptance speech, Wayne Lai said, “I thank TVB for all the opportunities they have given me over the years. Last year, all the people that I wanted to thank, I have thanked them already when I received the Best Actor Award. After receiving the award last year, I thought I will never get a chance […]

  24. I agree with Kara Hui that Steven Ma deserve to win the My Favourite Male Character. He did well in the series GHOSTS WRITER

  25. why raymond can win he must be TVB biligical son. unfair

  26. Steven Ma was nominated with different characters in the 2 awards category.

Best Actor – Po Chung Ling in Ghost Writer
Fave Character – Chow Yung Gung in A Watchdog’s Tale.

  27. @ Grace Yong

Kenneth, Moses, Raymond, Steven are all biological sons of TVB. Wayne Lai also has a kind of managed contract with TVB. He has a blog at TVB.com. Actor contract artists don’t have blog in TVB.com. But, sehseh told me he’s not fully managed by TVB, but, TVB help him get jobs. So, all nominees are biological sons.

The truly non-biological children that won awards are Sheren Teng and Raymond Wong.

  28. SDS, my husband would have to agree with you there 100%!

He also fast-forwarded those diary scenes and even holds the opinion that ratings for NR would have surpassed CBML if she hadn’t been given so much screen time!

  29. Fala does have that sort of arrogant look and yet consistently when she is out there promoting a series or herself she is always with a huge wide smile. A pity about her accent but she is those I feel who knows how to package and market herself.

  30. With Raymond Wong being in so many TVB series this year, I thought he was a biological son too. That’s great that TVB is promoting him and giving him opportunities even though he is not contracted with them.

  31. Yes, Raymond Wong was signed under China Star. That’s why in his award speech, he thanked his boss Mr. and Mrs. Heung. Mr.Heung is Charles Heung, boss of China Star.

  32. I seriously thought that Kenneth should have won for My Fav Male Character. Koo Yu Tong was much more pleasing than Kingsley. Even Kam Do Luk was better. Kingsley was quite a boring character, no offense to his fans. Raymond is a good actor but Kingsley is a bad-written charcter so I thought that Kenneth deserved to win My Fav Male Character much more than Raymond this year.

I was very sad for Selena that she didn’t win Most Improved. To me, I felt that Selena deserved it more though Natalie was quite good in AFOS but she was that good in The Comeback Clan. Other of her series was just average, it was just the character TVB gave her that she acheived some fame. But i thought that Selena’s acting is always constant and even her role in CBML left some impression.

  33. Congrats to both of them!! well deserved as the other series for the year weren’t really good anyway!

  34. Congrats to Sheren and Wayne! So glad that the most deserving got the award instead of Charmaine and Moses. Seriously, CBML was a crap series and the cast were terrible. Too bad it won the best drama tho..

On a another point, i know tht this is out of topic, but did anyone here watch the awards ceremony? Does anyone know why when Dodo was asking the guys the raise their hands before the fav male tv character award and no one raised their hand, after that, why did all the guys start laughing?

  35. yes, congrats to them! their win was definitely very well-deserved! 😀

  36. @CY Dodo said out of 15 nominees we have 8 sitting here and everyone must raised their hands (kui sau). The question was – who is here to just accompany the finalists? Obviously none will raise their hands as they all want to win. Then she announces that, “Oh everyone here is ‘Pat Kui’!” Because they did not raise their hands.

The ‘kui’ here is for like “shin kui” – election. So she was saying all here are not running for the seat. It was a gag using similar sound words with different meaning. Quite good gag hence all were laughing.

  37. Oh, okok i see.. Thanks for clearing it up! It’s tough for people like me of non canto speaking origin to understand what they mean in canto sometimes especially when they use play on words..

  38. @ Candy,

You got it wrong. ‘Pat Kui’ in Cantonese means erectile dysfunction. That’s why the guys were laughing.

  39. Kidd, that was a really funny moment! A great jibe by Dodo!

  40. Congratulations to Wayne and Sheren! Well deserved for their acting.

Interestingly, I had a look back at last year’s TVB Show Presentation 2010. It seems that the “original” storyline they had for NR was totally different to what was telecasted in this year’s NR.

The story actually indicated that Wayne Lai was the traitor instead of Sheren. Wonder if anybody watched it – last year’s show presentation?

I actually thought that storyline would have turned out much better and more exciting.

  41. In addition, I was curious. Anybody knows what happens to shows that were presented the year before but didn’t get to be broadcast in the year?

Example that Monk show that Bosco was suppose to be in. That show never broadcasted. I know that they have pushed Female Fist to next year. Any in 2009, there was a preview of Bobby Au-yeung acting with Charmaine as his wife in an ancient setting where Charmaine is a “Chu Niang” – Lady Kitchen Chef.

    Any ideas?

  42. @Kidd
Now I see why the guys had funny looks on their faces and were laughing so much. Not sure if Dodo actually meant it or was it a slip of the tongue, because after rewatching the clips, she looks a bit embarrassed.

  43. @ CY

No, it’s not a slip of the tongue. She meant to play this trick on the guys. I didn’t see any embarrassed expression on her.

  44. @ Jazzie

Not all the series presented will be filmed. The presentation was for the advertisers and financiers. If not enough takers, maybe the project would be dropped. I might be wrong about the reason the project is dropped. But, I do know that not all series presented is filmed and even if filmed, it might turn out to be totally different from what is presented. It has been this way for years. I don’t think the Bosco Monk series has been filmed yet.

  45. I think she meant what she said. Dodo is never embarrassed. A very funny moment and a very sharp minded wit that woman has.

  46. Wonder if she got annoyed at the guys for not responding to her question and decided to tease them..LOL, but anyhow, it really was a very funny and natural moment that night.

  47. @ Kidd, Thanks for the correction. I did not think it was that crude but it was quite a light heartening moment.

  48. @CY,

I don’t think she was annoyed and thus teased the guys. It’s a very predictable response to the question she asked. She knew most of the guys will respond like this.

  49. Actually, “Can’t Buy Me Love” was the highest rated series of the year. “No Regrets” only came in second.
